1 El susodicho Simón, delator del Tesoro del Templo y traidor de la patria, calumniaba a Onías, como si fuera este el que había maltratado a Heliodoro y el causante de sus desgracias.	1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.
2 Al bienhechor de la ciudad, al defensor de sus compatriotas, al ferviente cumplidor de las leyes, se atrevía a calificarlo de conspirador contra el Estado.	2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.
3 La hostilidad llegó a tal punto que uno de los partidarios de Simón cometió varios asesinatos.	3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,
4 Entonces Onías, considerando que aquella rivalidad era peligrosa y que Apolonio, hijo de Menesteo, gobernador de Celesiria y de Fenicia, fomentaba la maldad de Simón,	4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice,
5 se hizo presentar delante del rey, no para acusar a sus conciudadanos, sino por el bien general de todo su pueblo y de cada uno en particular.	5 He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:
6 El veía, efectivamente, que sin una intervención real, era imposible lograr la pacificación y contener los desatinos de Simón.	6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.
7 Después que murió Seleuco y le sucedió en el trono Antíoco, llamado Epífanes, Jasón, hermano de Onías, usurpó fraudulentamente el sumo sacerdocio,	7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,
8 prometiendo al rey en una entrevista trescientos sesenta talentos de plata, y ochenta de otras rentas.	8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:
9 Se comprometió, además, por escrito a pagar otros ciento cincuenta talentos, si se le concedía la facultad de instalar por su propia cuenta un gimnasio y un ateneo juvenil y de inscribir en un registro a los antioquenos residentes en Jerusalén.	9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.
10 Con el asentimiento del rey y teniendo los poderes en su mano, comenzó rápidamente a introducir entre sus compatriotas el estilo de vida de los griegos.	10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.
11 Suprimió los humanitarios privilegios que los reyes habían concedido a los judíos, por intermedio de Juan, padre de Eupólemo, el mismo Eupólemo que fue enviado como embajador para hacer una alianza de amistad con los romanos; derogó las instituciones legales e introdujo nuevas costumbres contrarias a la Ley;	11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:
12 así se dio el gusto de fundar un gimnasio al pie mismo de la Acrópolis e indujo a lo mejor de la juventud a los ejercicios atléticos.	12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.
13 Era tal el auge del helenismo y el avance de la moda extranjera, debido a la enorme perversidad de Jasón –el cual tenía más de impío que de Sumo Sacerdote –	13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;
14 que ya los sacerdotes no tenían ningún celo por el servicio del altar, sino que despreciaban el Templo. Apenas se daba la señal de lanzar el disco, dejaban de lado los sacrificios y se apresuraban a participar en los ejercicios de la palestra, que eran contrarios a la Ley.	14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;
15 Sin mostrar ningún aprecio por los valores nacionales, juzgaban las glorias de los griegos como las mejores.	15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.
16 Pero esto mismo los puso en grave aprieto, porque después tuvieron como enemigos y opresores a aquellos mismos cuya conducta emulaban y a los cuales querían imitar en todo.	16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.
17 Porque no se violan en vano las leyes divinas: así lo va a demostrar la etapa siguiente.	17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.
18 Cuando se celebraron en Tiro los juegos quinquenales con la asistencia del rey,	18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,
19 el infame Jasón envió como representantes de Jerusalén a algunos antioquenos, en calidad de observadores, con un presente de trescientas dracmas de oro para el sacrificio de Hércules. Pero ellos consideraron que era un inconveniente emplearlas para el sacrificio y que debían aplicarlas a otra clase de gastos.	19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.
20 De esta manera, el dinero asignado por el donante al sacrificio de Hércules fue destinado, por voluntad de los portadores, a la construcción de trirremes.	20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.
21 Apolonio, hijo de Menesteo, fue enviado a Egipto con motivo de la entronización del rey Filométor. Cuando Antíoco supo que aquel se había convertido en su adversario político, se preocupó por su propia seguridad. Por eso, al pasar por Jope, se desvió hacia Jerusalén.	21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:
22 Allí fue solemnemente recibido por Jasón y por la ciudad, e hizo su entrada en medio de antorchas y aclamaciones. Después de esto, fue a acampar con sus tropas a Fenicia.	22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.
23 Tres años más tarde, Jasón envió a Menelao, hermano del ya mencionado Simón, para llevar el dinero al rey y también para gestionar algunos asuntos importantes.	23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.
24 Pero Menelao, una vez presentado ante el rey, lo impresionó con su aire majestuoso y logró hacerse investir del sumo sacerdocio, ofreciéndole trescientos talentos de plata más que Jasón.	24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 Así regresó provisto del mandato real, pero sin llevar consigo nada digno del sumo sacerdocio, sino más bien la furia de un cruel tirano y la violencia de una fiera salvaje.	25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
26 De esta manera Jasón, que había suplantado a su vez por otro, y se vio forzado a huir a la región de Amán.	26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.
27 Pero Menelao, una vez adueñado del poder, no se preocupaba de pagar las sumas prometidas al rey,	27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:
28 a pesar de las reclamaciones de Sóstrates, el prefecto de la Acrópolis, ya que a él le correspondía percibir los impuestos. Por esto motivo, ambos fueron convocados por el rey.	28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.
29 Menelao dejó como sustituto en el sumo sacerdocio a su hermano Lisímaco, y Sóstrates dejó a Crates, jefe de los chipriotas.	29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.
30 Mientras tanto, se sublevaron los habitantes de Tarso y de Malos, porque sus ciudades habían sido regaladas a Antióquida, la concubina del rey.	30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.
31 El rey partió apresuradamente para poner las cosas en orden, dejando en su lugar a Andrónico, uno de los grandes dignatarios.	31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.
32 Menelao, pensando que se le había presentado una ocasión favorable, se apropió de unos objetos de oro del Templo y se los regaló a Andrónico, y también vendió otros en Tiro y en las ciudades vecinas.	32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.
33 Cuando Onías tuvo la evidencia de lo sucedido, se lo reprochó, después de haberse retirado da Dafne, ciudad que estaba cerca de Antioquía y gozaba de inmunidad.	33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.
34 Por eso Menelao, en conversaciones secretas con Andrónico, lo instigaba a matar a Onías. Entonces Andrónico se presentó ante Onías, y se ganó astutamente su confianza, estrechándole la mano derecha con un juramento. Así lo persuadió a que saliera de su refugio –aun sin disipar toda sospecha –y lo mató inmediatamente, conculcando toda justicia.	34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.
35 Frente a esto, no sólo los judíos, sino también mucha gente de las otras naciones se indignaron y se afligieron por el injusto asesinato de aquel hombre.	35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.
36 Apenas el rey regresó de las regiones de Cilicia, los judíos de la ciudad y los griegos que reprochaban tan mala acción, acudieron a él para quejarse por la injusta muerte de Onías.	36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.
37 Antíoco se entristeció profundamente y, movido a compasión, lloró recordando la prudencia y la gran moderación del difunto.	37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.
38 Luego, lleno de indignación, despojó a Andrónico de la púrpura, desgarró sus vestiduras y lo hizo conducir por toda la ciudad hasta el sitio donde había tratado tan impíamente a Onías. Allí hizo ajusticiar al homicida, y así el Señor le infligió el castigo que había merecido.	38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.
39 Lisímaco había cometido muchos robos sacrílegos en la ciudad con el consentimiento de Menelao, y la noticia se había divulgado entre la gente. Por eso el pueblo se amotinó contra Lisímaco, cuando ya muchos objetos de oro habían desaparecido.	39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.
40 Como la multitud estaba muy excitada y había llegado al colmo de su furor, Lisímaco armó cerca de tres mil hombres e inició una violenta represión, poniendo al frente a un tal Arauno, hombre avanzado en edad no menos que en falta de juicio.	40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.
41 Cuando advirtieron que Lisímaco los atacaba, unos se armaron de piedras, otros de palos, y otros, tomando puñados de la ceniza que había allí, los arrojaban violentamente contra las tropas.	41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.
42 De este modo hirieron a muchos de ellos y mataron a otros; a todos los demás los obligaron a huir y dieron muerte al sacrílego junto al Tesoro del Templo.	42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.
43 Con motivo de estos sucesos, se entabló un proceso contra Menelao.	43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.
44 Cuando el rey llegó a Tiro, tres hombres enviados por el Consejo de los ancianos presentaron una acusación contra él.	44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:
45 Al verse perdido, Menelao prometió una importante suma a Tolomeo, hijo de Dorimeno, para que tratara de persuadir al rey.	45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.
46 Tolomeo llevó al rey a una galería, como quien va a tomar un poco de aire, y allí lo hizo cambiar de parecer.	46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:
47 Así absolvió de las acusaciones a Menelao, que era el causante de todos esos males. En cambio, condenó a muerte a aquellos desdichados que hubieran sido absueltos como inocentes, incluso por un tribunal de bárbaros.	47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.
48 De esta manera fueron inmediatamente sometidos a un castigo injusto los que habían defendido la ciudad, el pueblo y los objetos sagrados.	48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
49 Por eso algunos tirios, indignados por aquella maldad, se encargaron de darles una espléndida sepultura.	49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.
50 Mientras tanto, Menelao se mantenía en el poder, gracias a la avaricia de aquellos gobernantes. Su maldad crecía cada vez más, convirtiéndolo en el principal adversario de sus compatriotas.	50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.
