BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ¿O es que ignoráis, hermanos, - hablo a quienes entienden de leyes - que la ley no domina sobre el hombre sino mientras vive?	1 As people who are familiar with the Law, brothers, you cannot have forgotten that the law can control aperson only during that person's lifetime.
2 Así, la mujer casada está ligada por la ley a su marido mientras éste vive; mas, una vez muerto el marido, se ve libre de la ley del marido.	2 A married woman, for instance, is bound to her husband by law, as long as he lives, but when herhusband dies all her legal obligation to him as husband is ended.
3 Por eso, mientras vive el marido, será llamada adultera si se une a otro hombre; pero si muere el marido, queda libre de la ley, de forma que no es adultera si se casa con otro.	3 So if she were to have relations with another man while her husband was still alive, she would betermed an adulteress; but if her husband dies, her legal obligation comes to an end and if she then has relationswith another man, that does not make her an adulteress.
4 Así pues, hermanos míos, también vosotros quedasteis muertos respecto de la ley por el cuerpo de Cristo, para pertenecer a otro: a aquel que fue resucitado de entre los muertos, a fin de que fructificáramos para Dios.	4 In the same way you, my brothers, through the body of Christ have become dead to the Law and soyou are able to belong to someone else, that is, to him who was raised from the dead to make us live fruitful y for God.
5 Porque, cuando estábamos en la carne, las pasiones pecaminosas, excitadas por la ley, obraban en nuestros miembros, a fin de que produjéramos frutos de muerte.	5 While we were stil living by our natural inclinations, the sinful passions aroused by the Law wereworking in al parts of our bodies to make us live lives which were fruitful only for death.
6 Mas, al presente, hemos quedado emancipados de la ley, muertos a aquello que nos tenía aprisionados, de modo que sirvamos con un espíritu nuevo y no con la letra vieja.	6 But now we are released from the Law, having died to what was binding us, and so we are in a newservice, that of the spirit, and not in the old service of a written code.
7 ¿Qué decir, entonces? ¿Que la ley es pecado? ¡De ningún modo! Sin embargo yo no conocí el pecado sino por la ley. De suerte que yo hubiera ignorado la concupiscencia si la ley no dijera: ¡No te des a la concupiscencia!	7 What should we say, then? That the Law itself is sin? Out of the question! All the same, if it had notbeen for the Law, I should not have known what sin was; for instance, I should not have known what it meant tocovet if the Law had not said: You are not to covet.
8 Mas el pecado, tomando ocasión por medio del precepto, suscitó en mi toda suerte de concupiscencias; pues sin ley el pecado estaba muerto.	8 But, once it found the opportunity through that commandment, sin produced in me al kinds ofcovetousness; as long as there is no Law, sin is dead.
9 ¡Ah! ¡Vivía yo un tiempo sin ley!, pero en cuanto sobrevino el precepto, revivió el pecado,	9 Once, when there was no Law, I used to be alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life
10 y yo morí; y resultó que el precepto, dado para vida, me fue para muerte.	10 and I died. The commandment was meant to bring life but I found it brought death,
11 Porque el pecado, tomando ocasión por medio del precepto, me sedujo, y por él, me mató.	11 because sin, finding its opportunity by means of the commandment, beguiled me and, by means of it,kil ed me.
12 Así que, la ley es santa, y santo el precepto, y justo y bueno.	12 So then, the Law is holy, and what it commands is holy and upright and good.
13 Luego ¿se habrá convertido lo bueno en muerte para mí? ¡De ningún modo! Sino que el pecado, para aparecer como tal, se sirvió de una cosa buena, para procurarme la muerte, a fin de que el pecado ejerciera todo su poder de pecado por medio del precepto.	13 Does that mean that something good resulted in my dying? Out of the question! But sin, in order to beidentified as sin, caused my death through that good thing, and so it is by means of the commandment that sinshows its unbounded sinful power.
14 Sabemos, en efecto, que la ley es espiritual, mas yo soy de carne, vendido al poder del pecado.	14 We are wel aware that the Law is spiritual: but I am a creature of flesh and blood sold as a slave tosin.
15 Realmente, mi proceder no lo comprendo; pues no hago lo que quiero, sino que hago lo que aborrezco.	15 I do not understand my own behaviour; I do not act as I mean to, but I do things that I hate.
16 Y, si hago lo que no quiero, estoy de acuerdo con la Ley en que es buena;	16 While I am acting as I do not want to, I still acknowledge the Law as good,
17 en realidad, ya no soy yo quien obra, sino el pecado que habita en mí.	17 so it is not myself acting, but the sin which lives in me.
18 Pues bien sé yo que nada bueno habita en mí, es decir, en mi carne; en efecto, querer el bien lo tengo a mi alcance, mas no el realizarlo,	18 And really, I know of nothing good living in me -- in my natural self, that is -- for though the wil to dowhat is good is in me, the power to do it is not:
19 puesto que no hago el bien que quiero, sino que obro el mal que no quiero.	19 the good thing I want to do, I never do; the evil thing which I do not want -- that is what I do.
20 Y, si hago lo que no quiero, no soy yo quien lo obra, sino el pecado que habita en mí.	20 But every time I do what I do not want to, then it is not myself acting, but the sin that lives in me.
21 Descubro, pues, esta ley: aun queriendo hacer el bien, es el mal el que se me presenta.	21 So I find this rule: that for me, where I want to do nothing but good, evil is close at my side.
22 Pues me complazco en la ley de Dios según el hombre interior,	22 In my inmost self I dearly love God's law,
23 pero advierto otra ley en mis miembros que lucha contra la ley de mi razón y me esclaviza a la ley del pecado que está en mis miembros.	23 but I see that acting on my body there is a different law which battles against the law in my mind. So Iam brought to be a prisoner of that law of sin which lives inside my body.
24 ¡Pobre de mí! ¿Quién me librará de este cuerpo que me lleva a la muerte?	24 What a wretched man I am! Who wil rescue me from this body doomed to death?
25 ¡Gracias sean dadas a Dios por Jesucristo nuestro Señor! Así pues, soy yo mismo quien con la razón sirve a la ley de Dios, mas con la carne, a la ley del pecado.	25 God -- thanks be to him -- through Jesus Christ our Lord. So it is that I myself with my mind obey thelaw of God, but in my disordered nature I obey the law of sin.
