2 Macabeos 15

1 Supo Nicanor que los hombres de Judas se hallaban en la región de Samaría y decidió atacarlos sin riesgo en el día del descanso.	1 When Nicanor learned that Judas and his companions were in the territory of Samaria, he decided to attack them in all safety on the day of rest.
2 Los judíos, que le acompañaban a la fuerza, le dijeron: «No mates así de modo tan salvaje y bárbaro; respeta y honra más bien el día que con preferencia ha sido santificado por Aquél que todo lo ve».	2 The Jews who were forced to follow him pleaded, "Do not massacre them in that way, like a savage barbarian, but show respect for the day which the All-seeing has exalted with holiness above all other days."
3 Aquel hombre tres veces malvado preguntó si en el cielo había un Soberano que hubiera prescrito celebrar el día del sábado.	3 At this the thrice-sinful wretch asked if there was a ruler in heaven who prescribed the keeping of the sabbath day.
4 Ellos le replicaron: «Es el mismo Señor que vive como Soberano en el cielo el que mandó observar el día séptimo».	4 When they replied that there was indeed such a ruler in heaven, the living LORD himself, who commanded the observance of the sabbath day,
5 Entonces el otro dijo: «También yo soy soberano en la tierra: el que ordena tomar las armas y prestar servicio al rey». Sin embargo no pudo realizar su malvado designio.	5 he said, "I, on my part, am ruler on earth, and my orders are that you take up arms and carry out the king's business." Nevertheless he did not succeed in carrying out his cruel plan.
6 Nicanor, jactándose con altivez, deliberaba erigir un trofeo común con los despojos de los hombres de Judas.	6 In his utter boastfulness and arrogance Nicanor had determined to erect a public monument of victory over Judas and his men.
7 Macabeo, por su parte, mantenía incesantemente su confianza, con la entera esperanza de recibir ayuda de parte del Señor,	7 But Maccabeus remained confident, fully convinced that he would receive help from the LORD.
8 y exhortaba a los que le acompañaban a no temer el ataque de los gentiles, teniendo presentes en la mente los auxilios que antes les habían venido del Cielo, y a esperar también entonces la victoria que les habría de venir de parte del Todopoderoso.	8 He urged his men not to fear the enemy, but mindful of the help they had received from Heaven in the past, to expect that now, too, victory would be given them by the Almighty.
9 Les animaba citando la Ley y los Profetas, y les recordaba los combates que habían llevado a cabo; así les infundía mayor ardor.	9 By encouraging them with words from the law and the prophets, and by reminding them of the battles they had already won, he filled them with fresh enthusiasm.
10 Después de haber levantado sus ánimos, les puso además de manifiesto la perfidia de los gentiles y la violación de sus juramentos.	10 Having stirred up their courage, he gave his orders and pointed out at the same time the perfidy of the Gentiles and their violation of oaths.
11 Armó a cada uno de ellos, no tanto con la seguridad de los escudos y las lanzas, como con la confianza de sus buenas palabras. Les refirió además un sueño digno de crédito, una especie de visión, que alegró a todos.	11 When he had armed each of them, not so much with the safety of shield and spear as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a kind of vision, worthy of belief.
12 Su visión fue tal como sigue: Onías, que había sido sumo sacerdote, hombre bueno y bondadoso, afable, de suaves maneras, distinguido en su conversación, preocupado desde la niñez por la práctica de la virtud, suplicaba con las manos tendidas por toda la comunidad de los judíos.	12 What he saw was this: Onias, the former high priest, a good and virtuous man, modest in appearance, gentle in manners, distinguished in speech, and trained from childhood in every virtuous practice, was praying with outstretched arms for the whole Jewish community.
13 Luego se apareció también un hombre que se distinguía por sus blancos cabellos y su dignidad, rodeado de admirable y majestuosa soberanía.	13 Then in the same way another man appeared, distinguished by his white hair and dignity, and with an air about him of extraordinary, majestic authority.
14 Onías había dicho: «Este es el que ama a sus hermanos, el que ora mucho por su pueblo y por la ciudad santa, Jeremías, el profeta de Dios».	14 Onias then said of him, "This is God's prophet Jeremiah, who loves his brethren and fervently prays for his people and their holy city."
15 Jeremías, tendiendo su diestra, había entregado a Judas una espada de oro, y al dársela había pronunciado estas palabras:	15 Stretching out his right hand, Jeremiah presented a gold sword to Judas. As he gave it to him he said,
16 «Recibe, como regalo de parte de Dios, esta espada sagrada, con la que destrozarás a los enemigos».	16 "Accept this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you shall crush your adversaries."
17 Animados por estas bellísimas palabras de Judas, capaces de estimular al valor y de robustecer las almas jóvenes, decidieron no resguardarse en la defensa, sino lanzarse valerosamente a la ofensiva y que, en un cuerpo a cuerpo, la fortuna decidiera, porque peligraban la ciudad, la religión y el Templo.	17 Encouraged by Judas' noble words, which had power to instill valor and stir young hearts to courage, the Jews determined not to delay, but to charge gallantly and decide the issue by hand-to-hand combat with the utmost courage, since their city and its temple with the sacred vessels were in danger.
18 En verdad que el cuidado por sus mujeres e hijos, por sus hermanos y parientes quedaba en segundo término; el primero y principal era por el Templo consagrado.	18 They were not so much concerned about their wives and children or their brothers and kinsmen; their first and foremost fear was for the consecrated sanctuary.
19 Igualmente para los que habían quedado en la ciudad no era menor la ansiedad, preocupados como estaban por el ataque en campo raso.	19 Those who remained in the city suffered a like agony, anxious as they were about the battle in the open country.
20 Todos aguardaban la decisión inmimente. Los enemigos se habían concentrado y el ejército se había alineado en orden de batalla. Los elefantes se habían situado en lugar apropiado y la caballería estaba dispuesta en las alas.	20 Everyone now awaited the decisive moment. The enemy were already drawing near with their troops drawn up in battle line, their elephants placed in strategic positions, and their cavalry stationed on the flanks.
21 Entonces Macabeo, al observar la presencia de las tropas, la variedad de las armas preparadas y el fiero aspecto de los elefantes, extendió las manos al cielo e invocó al Señor que hace prodigios, pues bien sabía que, no por medio de las armas, sino según su decisión, concede él la victoria a los que la merecen.	21 Maccabeus, contemplating the hosts before him, their elaborate equipment, and the fierceness of their elephants, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the LORD who works miracles; for he knew that it is not through arms but through the LORD'S decision that victory is won by those who deserve it.
22 Decía su invocación de la siguiente forma: «Tú, Soberano, enviaste tu ángel a Ezequías, rey de Judá, que dio muerte a cerca de 185.000 hombres del ejército de Senaquerib;	22 He prayed to him thus: "You, O LORD, sent your angel in the days of King Hezekiah of Judea, and he slew a hundred and eighty-five thousand men of Sennacherib's army.
23 ahora también, Señor de los cielos, envía un ángel bueno delante de nosotros para infundir el temor y el espanto.	23 Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel now to spread fear and dread before us.
24 ¡Que el poder de tu brazo hiera a los que han venido blasfemando a atacar a tu pueblo santo!» Así terminó sus palabras.	24 By the might of your arm may those be struck down who have blasphemously come against your holy people!" With this he ended his prayer.
25 Mientras la gente de Nicanor avanzaba al son de trompetas y cantos de guerra,	25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and battle songs.
26 los hombres de Judas entablaron combate con el enemigo entre invocaciones y plegarias.	26 But Judas and his men met the army with supplication and prayers.
27 Luchando con las manos, pero orando a Dios en su corazón, abatieron no menos de 35.000 hombres, regocijándose mucho por la manifestación de Dios.	27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God with their hearts, they laid low at least thirty-five thousand, and rejoiced greatly over this manifestation of God's power.
28 Al volver de su empresa, en gozoso retorno, reconocieron a Nicanor caído, con su armadura.	28 When the battle was over and they were joyfully departing, they discovered Nicanor lying there in all his armor;
29 Entre clamores y tumulto, bendecían al Señor en su lengua patria.	29 so they raised tumultuous shouts in their native tongue in praise of the divine Sovereign.
30 Entonces, el que en primera fila se había entregado, en cuerpo y alma, al bien de sus conciudadanos, el que había guardado hacia sus compatriotas los buenos sentimientos de su juventud, mandó cortar la cabeza de Nicanor y su brazo, hasta el hombro, y llevarlos a Jerusalén.	30 Then Judas, who was ever in body and soul the chief defender of his fellow citizens, and had maintained from youth his affection for his countrymen, ordered Nicanor's head and whole right arm to be cut off and taken to Jerusalem.
31 Llegado allí convocó a sus compatriotas, puso a los sacerdotes ante el altar y mandó buscar a los de la Ciudadela.	31 When he arrived there, he assembled his countrymen, stationed the priests before the altar, and sent for those in the citadel.
32 Les mostró la cabeza del abominable Nicanor y la mano que aquel infame había tendido insolentemente hacia la santa Casa del Todopoderoso;	32 He showed them the vile Nicanor's head and the wretched blasphemer's arm that had been boastfully stretched out against the holy dwelling of the Almighty.
33 y después de haber cortado la lengua del impío Nicanor, ordenó que se diera en trozos a los pájaros y que se colgara frente al santuario la paga de su insensatez.	33 He cut out the tongue of the godless Nicanor, saying he would feed it piecemeal to the birds and would hang up the other wages of his folly opposite the temple.
34 Todos entonces levantaron hacia el cielo sus bendiciones en honor del Señor que se les había manifestado, diciendo: «Bendito el que ha conservado puro su Lugar Santo».	34 At this, everyone looked toward heaven and praised the Lord who manifests his divine power, saying, "Blessed be he who has kept his own Place undefiled!"
35 La cabeza de Nicanor fue colgada de la Ciudadela, como señal manifiesta y visible para todos del auxilio del Señor.	35 Judas hung up Nicanor's head on the wall of the citadel, a clear and evident proof to all of the Lord's help.
36 Decretaron todos por público edicto no dejar pasar aquel día sin solemnizarlo, y celebrarlo el día trece del duodécino mes, llamado Adar en arameo, la víspera del Día de Mardoqueo.	36 By public vote it was unanimously decreed never to let this day pass unobserved, but to celebrate it on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, called Adar in Aramaic, the eve of Mordecai's Day.
37 Así pasaron los acontecimientos relacionados con Nicanor. Como desde aquella época la ciudad quedó en poder de los hebreos, yo también terminaré aquí mismo mi relato.	37 Since Nicanor's doings ended in this way, with the city remaining in possession of the Hebrews from that time on, I will bring my own story to an end here too.
38 Si ha quedado bello y logrado en su composición, eso es lo que yo pretendía; si imperfecto y mediocre, he hecho cuanto me era posible.	38 If it is well written and to the point, that is what I wanted; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that is the best I could do.
39 Como el beber vino solo o sola agua es dañoso, y en cambio, el vino mezclado con agua es agradable y de un gusto delicioso, igualmente la disposición grata del relato encanta los oídos de los que dan en leer la obra. Y aquí pongamos fin.	39 Just as it is harmful to drink wine alone or water alone, whereas mixing wine with water makes a more pleasant drink that increases delight, so a skillfully composed story delights the ears of those who read the work. Let this, then, be the end.
