BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Jacob, por su parte, se estableció en el que fue país residencial de su padre, el país de Canaán.	1 But Jacob settled in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
2 Esta es la historia de Jacob. José tenía diecisiete años. Estaba de pastor de ovejas con sus hermanos - él, muchacho todavía, con los hijos de Bilhá y los de Zilpá, mujeres de su padre. Y José comunicó a su padre lo mal que se hablaba de ellos.	2 This is the story of Joseph. Joseph was seventeen years old. As he was young, he was shepherdingthe flock with his brothers, with the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah; and Joseph brought his fatherbad reports about them.
3 Israel amaba a José más que a todos los demás hijos, por ser para él el hijo de la ancianidad. Le había hecho una túnica de manga larga.	3 Jacob loved Joseph more than al his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had adecorated tunic made for him.
4 Vieron sus hermanos cómo le prefería su padre a todos sus otros hijos, y le aborrecieron hasta el punto de no poder ni siquiera saludarle.	4 But his brothers, seeing how much more his father loved him than all his other sons, came to hate himso much that they could not say a civil word to him.
5 José tuvo un sueño y lo manifestó a sus hermanos, quienes le odiaron más aún.	5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he repeated it to his brothers, who then hated him more than ever.
6 Les dijo: «Oíd el sueño que he tenido.	6 'Listen', he said, 'to the dream I had.
7 Me parecía que nosotros estábamos atando gavillas en el campo, y he aquí que mi gavilla se levantaba y se tenía derecha, mientras que vuestras gavillas le hacían rueda y se inclinaban hacia la mía.»	7 We were binding sheaves in the field, when my sheaf suddenly rose and stood upright, and then yoursheaves gathered round and bowed to my sheaf.'
8 Sus hermanos le dijeron: «¿Será que vas a reinar sobre nosotros o que vas a tenernos domeñados?» Y acumularon todavía más odio contra él por causa de sus sueños y de su palabras.	8 'So you want to be king over us,' his brothers retorted, 'you want to lord it over us?' And they hatedhim even more, on account of his dreams and of what he said.
9 Volvió a tener otro sueño, y se lo contó a sus hermanos. Díjoles: «He tenido otro sueño: Resulta que el sol, la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban ante mí.»	9 He had another dream which he recounted to his brothers. 'Look, I have had another dream,' he said.'There were the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing down to me.'
10 Se lo contó a su padre y a sus hermanos, y su padre le reprendió y le dijo: «¿Qué sueño es ése que has tenido? ¿Es que yo, tu madre y tus hermanos vamos a venir a inclinarnos ante ti hasta el suelo?»	10 He told his father and brothers, and his father scolded him. 'A fine dream to have!' he said to him.'Are all of us then, myself, your mother and your brothers, to come and bow to the ground before you?'
11 Sus hermanos le tenían envidia, mientras que su padre reflexionaba.	11 His brothers held it against him, but his father pondered the matter.
12 Fueron sus hermanos a apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Siquem,	12 His brothers went to pasture their father's flock at Shechem.
13 y dijo Israel a José: «¿No están tus hermanos pastoreando en Siquem? Ve de mi parte a donde ellos.» Dijo: «Estoy listo.»	13 Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Your brothers are with the flock at Shechem, aren't they? Come, I amgoing to send you to them.' 'I am ready,' he replied.
14 Díjole: «Anda, vete a ver si tus hermanos siguen sin novedad, y lo mismo el ganado, y tráeme noticias.» Le envió, pues, desde el valle de Hebrón, y José fue a Siquem.	14 He said to him, 'Go and see how your brothers and the flock are doing, and bring me word.' He senthim from the val ey of Hebron, and Joseph arrived at Shechem.
15 Encontróse con él un hombre mientras estaba discurriendo por el campo. El hombre le preguntó: «¿Qué buscas?»	15 A man found him wandering in the countryside and asked him, 'What are you looking for ? '
16 Díjole: «Estoy buscando a mis hermanos. Indícame, por favor, dónde están pastoreando.»	16 'I am looking for my brothers,' he replied. 'Please tel me where they are pasturing their flock.'
17 El hombre le dijo: «Partieron de aquí, pues yo les oí decir: “Vamos a Dotán.”» José fue detrás de sus hermanos y los encontró en Dotán.	17 The man answered, 'They have moved on from here; indeed I heard them say, "Let us go toDothan." ' So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
18 Ellos le vieron de lejos, y antes que se les acercara, conspiraron contra él para matarle,	18 They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot to kil him.
19 y se decían mutuamente: «Por ahí viene el soñador.	19 'Here comes that dreamer,' they said to one another.
20 Ahora, pues, venid, matémosle y echémosle en un pozo cualquiera, y diremos que algún animal feroz le devoró. Veremos entonces en qué paran sus sueños.»	20 'Come on, let us kil him now and throw him down one of the storage-wells; we can say that somewild animal has devoured him. Then we shal see what becomes of his dreams.'
21 Rubén lo oyó y le libró de sus manos. Dijo: «No atentemos contra su vida.»	21 But Reuben heard, and he saved him from their clutches. 'We must not take his life,' he said.
22 Rubén les dijo: «No derraméis sangre. Echadle a ese pozo que hay en el páramo, pero no pongáis la mano sobre él.» Su intención era de salvarle de sus hermanos para devolverle a su padre.	22 'Shed no blood,' said Reuben to them, 'throw him down that wel out in the desert, but do not kil himyourselves' -- intending to save him from them and to restore him to his father.
23 Y ocurrió, que cuando llegó José donde sus hermanos, éstos despojaron a José de su túnica - aquella túnica de manga larga que llevaba puesta -,	23 So, when Joseph reached his brothers, they pul ed off his tunic, the decorated tunic which he waswearing,
24 y echándole mano le arrojaron al pozo. Aquel pozo estaba vacío, sin agua.	24 and catching hold of him, threw him into the wel . The wel was empty, with no water in it.
25 Luego se sentaron a comer. Y levantando los ojos divisaron una caravana de ismaelitas que venían de Galaad, con camellos cargados de almáciga, sandáraca y ládano, que iban bajando hacia Egipto.	25 They then sat down to eat. Looking up, they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming fromGilead, their camels laden with gum tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking to Egypt.
26 Entonces dijo Judá a sus hermanos: «¿Qué aprovecha el que asesinemos a nuestro hermano y luego tapemos su sangre?	26 Then Judah said to his brothers, 'What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?
27 Venid vamos a venderle a los ismaelitas, pero no pongamos la mano en él, porque es nuestro hermano, carne nuestra.» Y sus hermanos asintieron.	27 Come, let us sel him to the Ishmaelites, then we shal not have laid hands on him ourselves. Afteral , he is our brother, and our own flesh.' His brothers agreed.
28 Pasaron unos madianitas mercaderes, y descubriéndole subieron a José del pozo. Vendieron a José a los ismaelitas por veinte piezas de plata, y éstos se llevaron a José a Egipto.	28 Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they pul ed Joseph out of the wel . They soldJoseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.
29 Vuelve Rubén al pozo, y he aquí que José nos estaba en el pozo. El desgarró sus ropas,	29 When Reuben went back to the wel , there was no sign of Joseph. Tearing his clothes,
30 y volviendo donde sus hermanos les dijo: «El niño no aparece, y yo ¿qué hago ahora?»	30 he went back to his brothers. 'The boy has gone,' he said. 'What am I going to do?'
31 Entonces tomaron la túnica de José, y degollando un cabrito, tiñeron la túnica en sangre,	31 They took Joseph's tunic and, slaughtering a goat, dipped the tunic in the blood.
32 y enviaron la túnica de manga larga, haciéndola llegar hasta su padre con este recado: «Esto hemos encontrado: examina si se trata de la túnica de tu hijo, o no.»	32 Then they sent off the decorated tunic and had it taken to their father, with the message, 'This iswhat we have found. Do you recognise it as your son's tunic or not?'
33 El la examinó y dijo: «¡Es la túnica de mi hijo! ¡Algún animal feroz le ha devorado! ¡José ha sido despedazado!»	33 He recognised it and cried, 'My son's tunic! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph has been torn topieces!'
34 Jacob desgarró su vestido, se echó un sayal a la cintura e hizo duelo por su hijo durante muchos días.	34 Tearing his clothes and putting sackcloth round his waist, Jacob mourned his son for many days.
35 Todos sus hijos e hijas acudieron a consolarle, pero él rehusaba consolarse y decía: «Voy a bajar en duelo al seol donde mi hijo.» Y su padre le lloraba.	35 Al his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 'No,' he said, 'I wilgo down to Sheol in mourning and join my son.' Thus his father wept for him.
36 Por su parte, los madianitas, llegados a Egipto, le vendieron a Putifar, eunuco de Faraón y capitán de los guardias.	36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard.
