1 E andò Abimelec, figliuolo che fue di Gedeone, ai fratelli della madre sua, e favellò loro, e a tutto il suo parentado della casa del padre della madre sua, e disse:	1 Now Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, went to Shechem, to his maternal brothers, and he spoke to them, and to all the relatives of the house of his maternal grandfather, saying:
2 Parlate a tutti gli uomini della città di Sichem, (e dite loro): quale vi mette meglio, o che signoreggino sopra di voi (e siano vostri signori) LXX uomini della casa di Gedeone, o che vi signoreggi uno uomo? e tutti pensate insieme; però ch' io sono vostro osso e vostra carne.	2 “Speak to all the men of Shechem: Which is better for you: that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And consider also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
3 E favellarono di lui i fratelli della madre sua a tutti gli uomini di Sichem tutte quelle parole che avea detto Abimelec; e tanto fecero che puosero (nella testa e) ne' cuori loro, che andassero (dopo e) dietro alla signoria di Abimelec, dicendo loro: egli sì è nostro fratello.	3 And his maternal brothers spoke about him to all the men of Shechem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying, “He is our brother.”
4 E sì gli diedero LXX pesi d' ariento del luogo dove era l' idolo di Baalberit. Lo qual sì recò a sè e soldonne uomini poveri e senza opera e arte niuna; e sì lo seguitarono.	4 And they gave to him the weight of seventy silver coins from the shrine of Baal-berith. With this, he hired for himself indigent and wandering men, and they followed him.
5 E venne Abimelec con costoro nella casa del padre suo in Efra, e sì uccise i suoi fratelli, figliuoli di Gedeone, i quali erano LXX, in su una pietra; e rimase solo Ioatam figliuolo di Ierobaal (cioè di Gedeone) che era il minore, e si nascose.	5 And he went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and he killed his brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, upon one stone. And there remained only Joatham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, and he was in hiding.
6 E raunaronsi tutti gli uomini della città di Sichem, e tutte le famiglie della città di Mello; e sì andarono, e sì fecer re Abimelec, a lato alla quercia che sta in Sichem.	6 Then all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the families of the city of Millo, and they went and appointed Abimelech as king, beside the oak that stood at Shechem.
7 La qual cosa essendo nunziata (e ridetta) a Ioatam, andò e istette suso nel monte di Garizim; e gridando ad alta voce, (gridò e) disse: udite uomini della città di Sichem, (acciò che) così oda voi Iddio.	7 When this had been reported to Jotham, he went and stood at the top of Mount Gerizim. And lifting up his voice, he cried out and said: “Listen to me, men of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.
8 (E sì disse costui): andarono le legna acciò che ugnesseno (e facessero) sopra loro uno re, e dissono all' ulivo: sii nostro signore (e re).	8 The trees went to anoint a king over themselves. And they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
9 Il quale si respuose: or come posso io abbandonare la mia grassezza, la quale usano gli dii e gli uomini, (e andare) e venire per esser promosso tra le legna?	9 And it responded, ‘How could I abandon my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, and depart to be promoted among the trees?’
10 E disseno le legna al fico: vieni, e piglia il reame (e la signoria) sopra noi.	10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and accept royal power over us.’
11 Il quale si rispuose loro: or come posso io abbandonare la dolcezza mia e i frutti soavissimi, e andare acciò ch' io sia promosso a tutti gli altri legni?	11 And it responded to them, ‘How could I abandon my sweetness, and my very sweet fruits, and depart to be promoted among the other trees?’
12 E favellarono le legna ancora alla vite: vieni, e sii nostro signore.	12 And the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’
13 La quale sì respuose: or posso io abbandonare il vino mio, il quale (fa lieto e) rallegra Dio e gli uomini, ed essere levato in alto tra tutti gli altri legni?	13 And it responded to them, ‘How could I abandon my wine, which gives joy to God and men, and be promoted among the other trees?’
14 E dissero tutte le legna al pruno: vieni e sii nostro signore.	14 And all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’
15 Il quale sì respuose loro: se voi veramente m'avete fatto re, venite e sì vi riposate sotto l'ombra mia; ma se voi non volete, esca fuori del pruno il fuoco, e arda tutti i cedri del (monte di) Libano.	15 And it responded to them: ‘If truly you would appoint me as king, come and rest under my shadow. But if you are not willing, let fire go forth from the bramble, and let it devour the cedars of Lebanon.’ ”
16 E ora veramente, se senza peccato, e dirittamente avete fatto re sopra voi Abimelec, e [vi] siete bene portati con Ierobaal (cioè con Gedeone) e con la casa sua, e avetegli renduto secondo i benefizii suoi, il quale combattette per voi,	16 So now, if you are upright and without sin in appointing Abimelech as a king over you, and if you have acted well with Jerubbaal, and with his house, and if you have repaid, in turn, the benefits of him who fought on your behalf,
17 e puose l'anima sua e la vita sua, acciò che vi liberasse delle mani di Madian;	17 and who gave his life to dangers, so that he might rescue you from the hand of Midian,
18 e ora vi siete levati suso contra alla casa del padre mio, e avete morti i suoi figliuoli, LXX uomini, sopra una pietra, e avete fatto re Abimelec, figliuolo di una fante di Gedeone, sopra gli uomini di Sichem, perchè è vostro fratello;	18 though you now have risen up against my father’s house, and have killed his sons, seventy men, upon one stone, and have appointed Abimelech, the son of his handmaid, as a king over the inhabitants of Shechem, since he is your brother,
19 onde se dirittamente e sanza vizio avete fatto oggi con Ierobaal (cioè con Gedeone) e con la casa sua, rallegratevi (e pigliate conforto) con Abimelec, ed egli si rallegri (e conforti) con voi.	19 if therefore you are upright and have acted without fault with Jerubbaal and his house, then you should rejoice on this day in Abimelech, and he should rejoice in you.
20 Ma se avete fatto perversamente, esca fuori il fuoco di Gedeone, acciò che consumi (e arda) gli abitatori di Sichem e il castello di Mello; ed esca fuori il fuoco degli uomini di Sichem e del castello di Mello, e sì divori (e arda) Abimelec.	20 But if you have acted perversely, may fire go forth from him and consume the inhabitants of Shechem and the town of Millo. And may fire go forth from the men of Shechem and from the town of Millo, and devour Abimelech.”
21 Le quali cose avendo tutte dette, si fuggì, e andossene nella città di Bera; e sì abitò quivi per paura di Abimelec suo fratello.	21 And when he had said these things, he fled and went away to Beer. And he lived in that place, out of fear of Abimelech, his brother.
22 E regnò Abimelec sopra i figliuoli d' Israel tre anni.	22 And so Abimelech reigned over Israel for three years.
23 E mise Iddio uno spirito pessimo (e una discordia) tra Abimelec e gli abitatori di Sichem; i quali sì incominciarono a biasimare (e avere in abominazione) il peccato,	23 And the Lord put a very grievous spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Shechem, who began to detest him,
24 e quella cosa iscellerata che fece dell' uccidere li LXX figliuoli di Gedeone, e lo spargimento che fece del sangue loro; incominciarono a (dire e a) favellare ad Abimelec loro fratello; e parlano [con] tra tutti gli altri principi della città di Sichem, quali l' aveano aiutato.	24 and to place blame for the crime of the killing of the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and for the shedding of their blood, upon Abimelech, their brother, and upon the rest of the leaders of the Shechemites, who assisted him.
25 E si gli puoser gli agguati suso nella punta de' monti; e aspettando che venisse Abimelec, sì andavano (sempre nascosi, e) rubando e facendo preda di coloro che passavano. E fue nunziato (e mandato dire) ad Abimelec.	25 And they stationed an ambush against him at the summit of the mountains. And while they were waiting for his arrival, they committed robberies, taking spoils from those passing by. And this was reported to Abimelech.
26 E venne Gaal figliuolo di Obed coi fratelli suoi, e sì passò suso in Sichem. Nel cui avvenimento, levandosi suso gli abitatori di Sichem,	26 Now Gaal, the son of Ebed, went with his brothers, and crossed over to Shechem. And the inhabitants of Shechem, uplifted by his arrival,
27 si uscirono fuori nelli campi, guastando le vigne e calcando coi piedi in su l' uve (ordinate); e fatte le schiere de' cantatori, sì entrarono nel tempio del loro iddio, e dentro le nozze e il convito sì maledicevano Abimelec,	27 departed into the fields, laying waste to the vineyards, and trampling the grapes. And while singing and dancing, they entered into the shrine of their god. And while feasting and drinking, they cursed Abimelech.
28 gridando Gaal figliuolo di Obed, e dicendo: chi è Abimelec, e chi è Sichem, che noi gli serviamo? Or non si trova ch' egli è figliuolo di Ierobaal, e ch' egli ha fatto principe il servo suo Zebul sopra gli uomini d' Emor padre di Sichem? Perchè gli serviamo noi?	28 And Gaal, the son of Ebed, cried out: “Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, who has appointed Zebul, his servant, as ruler over the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem? Why then should we serve him?
29 Iddio il volesse, che fosse alcuno il quale desse questo popolo sotto la mia mano, acciò ch' io ne cacciassi di mezzo Abimelec! E fue detto ad Abimelec: rauna l'oste e la moltitudine, e vieni.	29 I wish that someone would set this people under my hand, so that I might take away Abimelech from their midst.” And it was told to Abimelech, “Gather the multitude of an army, and approach.”
30 E avendo. udite queste parole Zebul, principe della città, le quali avea dette Gaal figliuolo di Obed, turbossi fortemente.	30 For Zebul, the ruler of the city, upon hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Ebed, became very angry.
31 E mandò nascosamente i messi ad Abimelec, dicendo: ecco Gaal figliuolo di Obed sì è venuto in Sichem colli suoi (messi e) fratelli, e sì combatte (e si fa commozione) contro a te nella cittade.	31 And he sent messengers secretly to Abimelech, saying: “Behold, Gaal, the son of Ebed, has arrived at Shechem with his brothers, and he has set the city against you.
32 Lèvati suso di notte col popolo il quale è teco, e sì ti nascondi nel campo.	32 And so, rise up in the night, with the people who are with you, and lie hidden in the field.
33 E la mattina per tempo, quando il sole si lieva, percuoti adosso alla cittade: e uscendo egli contro a te (fuori della cittade) con lo popolo suo, fa tu a lui quello che fare puoi.	33 And at first light in the morning, as the sun is rising, rush upon the city. And when he goes out against you, with his people, do to him what you are able to do.”
34 E levossi suso di notte Abimelec con tutto l'oste suo; e sì puose agguati a lato a Sichem in quattro luoghi.	34 And so Abimelech rose up, with all his army, by night, and he set ambushes near Shechem in four places.
35 E uscì fuori (incontro a lui) Gaal figliuolo di Obed, e istette suso nella entrata della porta della cittade. E levossi suso Abimelec, e tutto quanto l'oste suo con lui, del luogo dove (e nel quale) eran gli agguati.	35 And Gaal, the son of Ebed, went out, and he stood at the entrance to the gate of the city. Then Abimelech rose up, and all the army with him, from the places of the ambushes.
36 E veggendo egli il popolo apparire, disse Gaal a Zebul: ecco una grande moltitudine di gente, la quale iscende giuso del monte. Al quale respuose Zebul: ombre di monti tu vedi, quasi come capi di uomini, e però tu se' ingannato per questo errore.	36 And when Gaal had seen the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, a multitude is descending from the mountains.” And he responded to him, “You are seeing the shadows of the mountains, as if they were the heads of men, and so you are being deceived by this error.”
37 E disse una altra volta Gaal: ecco uno grande popolo il quale esce dal mezzo della terra; e una schiera venne per la via la quale riesce alla quercia.	37 Again, Gaal said, “Behold, a people is descending from the middle of the land, and one company is arriving by the way that looks towards the oak.”
38 Allo quale disse Zebul: dove è ora la bocca tua delle parole, che dicevi? Chi è Abimelec, che noi gli serviamo? Non è questo popolo che tu dispregiavi? Esci fuori, e combatti contro a lui.	38 And Zebul said to him: “Where is your mouth now, with which you said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Is this not the people that you were despising? Go out and fight against him.”
39 E andò Gaal, aspettando il popolo di quelli di Sichem; e combattè contro Abimelec.	39 Therefore, Gaal went out, with the people of Shechem watching, and he fought against Abimelech,
40 E sì lo isconfisse Abimelec; e andogli dietro, e fuggendo sì il costrinse d'entrare nella cittade (tanto il perseguitò); e furono morti di quegli della parte sua molti, insino alla porta della cittade.	40 who pursued him, fleeing, and drove him into the city. And many were cut down on his side, even to the gate of the city.
41 E istette Abimelec suso nel luogo dove era (fatta la sconfitta) Ruma; e Zebul, Gaal e' suoi compagni cacciò fuori della cittade, e non sostenne che vi stessero punto.	41 And Abimelech made camp at Arumah. But Zebul expelled Gaal and his companions from the city, and he would not permit them to remain in it.
42 Il dì vegnente uscì fuori il popolo nel campo. La qual cosa essendo ridetta ad Abimelec,	42 Therefore, on the following day, the people departed into the field. And when this had been reported to Abimelech,
43 si prese tutto l'oste suo, e sì lo divise in tre schiere, e puose gli agguati nelli campi; e vedendo il popolo, il quale usciva della cittade, levossi suso dello agguato, e percossegli adosso	43 he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and he placed ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people had departed from the city, he rose up and rushed upon them,
44 con la schiera sua, combattendo forte e assediando la cittade; e le due altre ( ch' erano) ischiere correndo per lo campo, perseguitavano i nemici.	44 along with his own company, assaulting and besieging the city. But the two other companies pursued the enemies scattered in the field.
45 E Abimelec tutto quanto il dì combatteo la cittade; il quale sì la prese, e uccise tutti quanti gli abitatori della cittade; e disfacendola sì la spianò e dentro (sì seminò e) fece seminare il sale.	45 Now Abimelech assaulted the city all that day. And he seized it, and he killed its inhabitants, and he destroyed it, so much so that he scattered salt in it.
46 La qual cosa udendo coloro i quali istavano nella torre degli uomini di Sichem, sì entrarono nel templo del loro iddio Berit; e qui fecero patto (e legamento) con lui; e da lui sì avea preso questo nome lo luogo che era (forte, imperciò ch' era) molto bene (fornito e) fortificato.	46 And when those living in the tower of Shechem had heard about this, they entered the temple of their god, Berith, where they had formed a covenant with him. And it was because of this, that the place had taken its name. And it was greatly fortified.
47 E udendo Abimelec, che gli uomini della torre di quelli di Sichem erano dentro tutti raunati,	47 Abimelech, also hearing that the men of the tower of Shechem had joined together,
48 si salì in sul monte di Selmon con tutto il suo popolo; e presa in mano la scure, si tagliò uno grande ramo dall'àlbore; e postolosi suso in su la spalla, e portandolo, disse al popolo e compagni ch' erano con lui: quello che voi vedeste fare a me, fate voi costà.	48 ascended to mount Zalmon, with all his people. And taking an axe, he cut down the branch of a tree. And laying it on his shoulder, and carrying it, he said to his companions, “What you see me do, you must do quickly.”
49 E tagliando ciascuno fortemente i rami degli arbori, seguitavano lo loro duca. Attorniando costoro la torre (intorno intorno) con questi rami di àrbori, sì vi misono entro fuoco; e intervenne questo, che del fumo e del fuoco (annegarono e) morirono più di mille uomini, tra femine e maschi insieme, i quali abitavano (ed erano) nella torre di Sichem.	49 And so, eagerly cutting down branches from the trees, they followed their leader. And surrounding the fortified place, they set it on fire. And so it happened that, by smoke and fire, one thousand persons died, men and women together, the occupants of the tower of Shechem.
50 E partendosi quindi Abimelec, venne suso al castello di Tebes; il quale (castello) attorniato, sì l' assediava con l'oste suo.	50 Then Abimelech, setting out from there, arrived at the town of Thebez, which he surrounded and besieged with his army.
51 Ed era nel mezzo una torre altissima, nella quale erano fuggiti molti uomini e molte femine e tutti quanti i principi della cittade; e sì aveano forte serrata la porta, e istavano sopra il tetto della torre intorno alle beltresche.	51 Now there was, in the midst of the city, a high tower, to which men and women were fleeing together, with all the leaders of the city. And, having very strongly sealed the gate, they were standing on the roof of the tower to defend themselves.
52 E andando Abimelec (e accostandosi) presso alla torre, combatteva fortemente; e approssimandosi alla porta, si forzava di mettervi entro fuoco.	52 And Abimelech, drawing near the tower, fought valiantly. And approaching the gate, he strove to set it on fire.
53 E venne una femina, e gittò di sopra una pezza di macina; e diede in sul capo di Abimelec, e tutto il cervello sì gli spezzò.	53 And behold, one woman, throwing a fragment of a millstone from above, struck the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.
54 Il quale sì chiamò tosto il suo scudiero, e sì gli disse: isguaina il coltello tuo (e dammi) e uccidimi, acciò che non si dica ch' io sia morto per mano di femina. Il quale facendo quello che gli fu comandato, sì lo uccise.	54 And he quickly called to his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and strike me, otherwise it may be said that I was slain by a woman.” And, doing as he was ordered, he killed him.
55 E morto egli, tutti coloro i quali erano con lui del popolo d'Israel, sì si tornarono nel luogo loro.	55 And when he was dead, all those of Israel who were with him returned to their homes.
56 E rendette Iddio male e quello che avea meritato Abimelec contro al padre suo, avendo morti LXX (uomini de') suoi fratelli.	56 And so did God repay the evil that Abimelech had done against his father by killing his seventy brothers.
57 E quelli di Sichem, come aveano adoperato, così rendette loro; e vennero loro addosso le maledizioni di Ioatam figliuolo dì Ierobaal (cioè di Gedeone).	57 The Shechemites also were given retribution for what they had done, and the curse of Jotham, the son of Jerubbaal, fell upon them.
