1 Fue uno uomo della schiatta di Levi, il quale abitava nel lato del monte di Efraim; il quale si prese moglie di Betleem di Giuda.	1 At that time, when there was no king in Israel, there was a Levite residing in remote parts of the mountain region of Ephraim who had taken for himself a concubine from Bethlehem of Judah.
2 La quale sì lo abbandonò, e ritornò nella casa del padre suo in Betleem, e istette con esso lui quattro mesi.	2 His concubine was unfaithful to him and left him for her father's house in Bethlehem of Judah, where she stayed for some four months.
3 E andolle dietro il marito suo, volendola riconciliare e pacificare, e per menarla seco, avendo per sua compagnia uno garzone e due asini; la quale sì lo ricevette, e menollo in casa del padre suo. La quale cosa avendo udito il suocero suo, e avendo veduto, vennegli incontro tutto lieto,	3 Her husband then set out with his servant and a pair of asses, and went after her to forgive her and take her back. She brought him into her father's house, and on seeing him, the girl's father joyfully made him welcome.
4 e sì lo abbracciò. E istette il genero nella casa del padre suo tre dì a mangiare con lui e a bere (somigliantemente e) familiarmente.	4 He was detained by the girl's father, and so he spent three days with this father-in-law of his, eating and drinking and passing the night there.
5 Il quarto dì, levandosi di notte, sì se ne volea andare; il quale sì ritenne il suocero, e sì gli disse: manuca in prima uno poco del pane, e confòrtati lo stomaco; poi sì ti partirai.	5 On the fourth day they rose early in the morning and he prepared to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Fortify yourself with a little food; you can go later on."
6 E sedettono insieme, e mangiarono e bevenno. E disse il padre della fanciulla al genero suo: io ti prego che tu istii oggi insieme meco, pigliando letizia (e allegrezza).	6 So they stayed and the two men ate and drank together. Then the girl's father said to the husband, "Why not decide to spend the night here and enjoy yourself?"
7 E levandosi suso, cominciò a volere andare via; e con tutto ciò per forza sì il tenne il suocero (suo), e fecelo rimanere con lui.	7 The man still made a move to go, but when his father-in-law pressed him he went back and spent the night there.
8 E fatta la mattina, si apparecchiava questi della schiatta di Levi ad andare. Al quale disse un' altra volta il suocero (suo): io ti prego che tu pigli un altro poco di cibo, e tutto rinforzato, tanto che il dì cresca; poi sì va. E mangiarono insieme.	8 On the fifth morning he rose early to depart, but the girl's father said, "Fortify yourself and tarry until the afternoon." When he and his father-in-law had eaten,
9 E levossi suso il giovane per andare colla moglie sua e col suo garzone. Al quale un' altra volta favellò il suocero (e disse): considera che il dì si è molto presso al tramontare del sole, e appròssimasi al vespro (cioè alla sera); istatti ancora oggi meco, e mena (e abbi) uno lieto dì, e domani ti partirai per andare a casa tua.	9 and the husband was ready to go with his concubine and servant, the girl's father said to him, "It is already growing dusk. Stay for the night. See, the day is coming to an end. Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow you can start your journey home."
10 E non volse consentire il genero alle parole del suocero; ma incontanente si levò, e vènnesene verso Iebus, la quale sì ha un altro nome che si chiama IERUSALEM, menando seco due asini carichi e la moglie.	10 The man, however, refused to stay another night; he and his concubine set out with a pair of saddled asses, and traveled till they came opposite Jebus, which is Jerusalem.
11 E già erano presso a Iebus, e il dì si facea notte; e disse il garzone al signore suo: vieni, priegoti, andiamcene alla città de' Gebusei, e istiamvi dentro.	11 Since they were near Jebus with the day far gone, the servant said to his master, "Come, let us turn off to this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it."
12 Al quale sì respuose il signore (e disse): certo io non entrerò in castello d' altra gente (straniera), la quale non è de' figliuoli d' Israel, ma passerò oltre insino a Gabaa.	12 But his master said to him, "We will not turn off to a city of foreigners, who are not Israelites, but will go on to Gibeah.
13 E quando saremo giunti, sì staremo quivi, ovvero certamente nella città di Rama.	13 Come," he said to his servant, "let us make for some other place, either Gibeah or Ramah, to spend the night."
14 E passarono Iebus, e faceano il viaggio loro; e tramontò loro il sole a lato a Gabaa, la quale si è nella schiatta di Beniamin :	14 So they continued on their way till the sun set on them when they were abreast of Gibeah of Benjamin.
15 ed entrarovi dentro per istarvi (la notte); ed essendo entrati, sì istavano nella piazza della cittade; e non era veruno che loro volesse ricevere ad albergo.	15 There they turned off to enter Gibeah for the night. The man waited in the public square of the city he had entered, but no one offered them the shelter of his home for the night.
16 Ed ecco che apparì nella piazza uno uomo antico, il quale tornava dal campo e dall'opera sua al tardi; il quale ancora era del monte di Efraim, e sì come peregrino abitava (e istava) in Gabaa; e gli uomini di quella contrada sì erano figliuoli di dui fratelli, nati carnalmente ad uno corpo.	16 In the evening, however, an old man came from his work in the field; he was from the mountain region of Ephraim, though he lived among the Benjaminite townspeople of Gibeah.
17 E levato in alto gli occhii, questo vecchio vidde questo uomo sedere nella piazza della città con li sacchetti e con la robba sua, e sì gli disse: onde vieni tu? e dove vai?	17 When he noticed the traveler in the public square of the city, the old man asked where he was going, and whence he had come.
18 Il quale sì respuose: noi venimo di Betleem Giuda, e andiamcene a casa nostra, la quale si è dal lato dal monte di Efraim (di Giuda), onde eravamo iti in Betleem; e ora andiamo alla casa di Dio, e non è veruno che ci voglia ricevere sotto il [suo] tetto,	18 He said to him, "We are traveling from Bethlehem of Judah far up into the mountain region of Ephraim, where I belong. I have been to Bethlehem of Judah and am now going back home; but no one has offered us the shelter of his house.
19 avendo noi la paglia e il fieno per dare agli asini, e il pane e il vino per me e per la donna mia e per il garzone che sono meco; di niuna cosa abbiamo bisogno, se non d'albergo.	19 We have straw and fodder for our asses, and bread and wine for the woman and myself and for our servant; there is nothing else we need."
20 Al quale respuose questo vecchio: pace sia teco, io apparecchierò tutte le cose le quali sono bisogno; ma d' una cosa ti priego, che tu non stei in su la piazza.	20 "You are welcome," the old man said to him, "but let me provide for all your needs, and do not spend the night in the public square."
21 E si lo menò a casa sua, e diede la prebenda agli asini; e poi ch' ebbeno lavato i piedi loro, sì gli menò al convito (a mangiare).	21 So he led them to his house and provided fodder for the asses. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22 E mangiando loro, e dopo la fatica del cammino, col mangiare e col bere confortando i corpi loro, subitamente vennero gli uomini di quella cittade, figliuoli del demonio e senza freno; e attorniando la casa di questo vecchio, incominciarono a picchiare alle porte, gridando al signore della casa e dicendo: menate a noi fuori questo uomo, il quale è entrato in casa tua, acciò che abbiamo a fare con lui.	22 While they were enjoying themselves, the men of the city, who were corrupt, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man whose house it was, "Bring out your guest, that we may abuse him."
23 E uscìo lui fuori questo vecchio, e disse: (pregovi, non fate) fratelli miei, (e) non vogliate fare tanto male; imperciò che questo uomo si è entrato nel luogo mio; partitevi da questa stoltizia.	23 The owner of the house went out to them and said, "No, my brothers; do not be so wicked. Since this man is my guest, do not commit this crime.
24 Io hoe una figliuola vergine, e questo uomo sì ha una sua moglie; io le vi menerò fuori a voi, acciò che abbiate a fare (e istiate) con loro e satisfacciate alla vostra (tentazione e) carnalitade; ma di questo tanto vi prego, che questo peccato (e questa offesa) contro natura non facciate con questo uomo.	24 Rather let me bring out my maiden daughter or his concubine. Ravish them, or do whatever you want with them; but against the man you must not commit this wanton crime."
25 E non voleano consentire alle parole sue. La quale cosa veggendo questo uomo, mise la moglie in mano di costoro, acciò che satisfacessono alla loro mala volontade: la quale avendo tutta notte usata (e vituperata), in su la mattina la lasciarono andare.	25 When the men would not listen to his host, the husband seized his concubine and thrust her outside to them. They had relations with her and abused her all night until the following dawn, when they let her go.
26 E la femina, partendosi la notte, venne all'uscio della casa dove stava suo marito e signore; e quivi cadde morta.	26 Then at daybreak the woman came and collapsed at the entrance of the house in which her husband was a guest, where she lay until the morning.
27 E fatto la mattina (il dì) si levò suso il marito suo, e sì aprì l'uscio, per volere compiere il viaggio il quale avea cominciato: ed ecco che la moglie sua si giacea dinanzi all' uscio colle mani distese in su il sogliare (dell' uscio).	27 When her husband rose that day and opened the door of the house to start out again on his journey, there lay the woman, his concubine, at the entrance of the house with her hands on the threshold.
28 Alla quale dicea il marito, pensando ch' ella si riposasse (e dormisse): lièvati suso, che andiamo. La quale non rispondendo alcuna cosa, e conoscendo egli ch' era morta, sì la tolse e pose in su l'asino, e sì tornò a casa sua.	28 He said to her, "Come, let us go"; but there was no answer. So the man placed her on an ass and started out again for home.
29 Ed essendo entrato in casa, sì pigliò uno coltello, e il corpo della moglie sì divise in dodici parti, e sì le mandò in tutti i termini (e confini, secondo che abitavano la schiatta de' figliuoli) d' Israel.	29 On reaching home, he took a knife to the body of his concubine, cut her into twelve pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel.
30 La quale cosa udendo ciascheduno, tutti insieme gridavano: giammai in Israel non fu fatta una così fatta cosa, da quello dì che vennero i nostri padri d'Egitto insino al tempo (d' oggi) presente; onde date la sentenza, e tutti comunemente giudicate quello che fare si dee di questo fatto.	30 Everyone who saw this said, "Nothing like this has been done or seen from the day the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt to this day. Take note of it, and state what you propose to do."
