1 La verità dico in (Dio Iesù) Cristo; e non mento, rendendomi la conscienza mia testimonianza. collo Spirito Santo,	1 I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the holy Spirit in bearing me witness
2 che in me io abbo grande tristizia, e dolore che non viene meno nel mio cuore.	2 that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart.
3 Chè fu tale tempo, che io desiderava d'essere spartito da Cristo per li miei fratelli, li quali son parenti secondo la carne,	3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kin according to the flesh.
4 cioè li iudei, li quali in qua drieto furono chiamati figliuoli, ed ebbero lode e gloria (di Dio) e la legge e il testamento, e serviti furono dalli angioli [secondo] la promissione.	4 They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;
5 E Cristo nacque di loro schiatta secondo la carne, il qual sia benedetto sopra tutte le cose, e tutti i secoli, amen.	5 theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah. God who is over all be blessed forever. Amen.
6 Ma la parola di Dio non cade; però che tutti quelli, che sono della circoncisione, non sono però della schiatta d' Israel;	6 But it is not that the word of God has failed. For not all who are of Israel are Israel,
7 nè tutti quelli, che furono nati d' Abraam, non furono figliuoli (eletti da Dio); ma (così fu detto ad Abraam) per Isaac sarà chiamata la tua schiatta,	7 nor are they all children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but "It is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your name."
8 e non per l' altro figliuolo che non è maternale, cioè non son figliuoli di Dio.	8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants.
9 La parola della promissione (che fu fatta ad Abraam) sì è questa: un altro anno, in questo tempo, avrà figliuolo la tua moglie Sara.	9 For this is the wording of the promise, "About this time I shall return and Sarah will have a son."
10 E non solamente a Sara fu donato figliuolo per promissione, ma eziandio a Rebecca la quale fu moglie d'Isaac; la quale Rebecca sì partorì ad uno ventre due figliuoli.	10 And not only that, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one husband, our father Isaac --
11 De' quali fu detto da Dio, inanzi che nascessero o che facessero o bene o male, (che il maggiore servirebbe al minore), perchè il proponimento di Dio stesse fermo secondo (il chiamamento e) la sua elezione (quando egli elesse il minore e non il maggiore);	11 before they had yet been born or had done anything, good or bad, in order that God's elective plan might continue,
12 e non per opere ch' egli avessero ancora fatte; fu detto (a Rebecca):	12 not by works but by his call--she was told, "The older shall serve the younger."
13 il maggiore servirà al minore, secondo che ancora è scritto (che disse Dio): io amai Iacob, ed Esan ebbi in odio.	13 As it is written: "I loved Jacob but hated Esau."
14 Adunque che diremo? è appo Dio iniquità? certo non.	14 What then are we to say? Is there injustice on the part of God? Of course not!
15 Chè egli disse a Moisè: a colui cui io farò pietà, sì gli sarà fatta; e a colui cui io farò misericordia, sì gli sarà fatta (e a compimento).	15 For he says to Moses: "I will show mercy to whom I will, I will take pity on whom I will."
16 Adunque la misericordia non è da colui che la vuole, nè da colui che corre, ma da Iddio misericordioso.	16 So it depends not upon a person's will or exertion, but upon God, who shows mercy.
17 E la scrittura sì dice a Faraone: io per questa cosa sì t'abbo indurato (disse Dio), per dimostrare la mia potenza in te, e perchè il mio nome sia annunciato per tutto il mondo.	17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "This is why I have raised you up, to show my power through you that my name may be proclaimed throughout the earth."
18 Adunque Dio ha pietà a cui gli piace, e indura colui cui egli vuole.	18 Consequently, he has mercy upon whom he wills, and he hardens whom he wills.
19 Or forse potrai tu dire: che andiamo più cercando? alla volontà di Dio chi può resistere?	19 You will say to me then, "Why (then) does he still find fault? For who can oppose his will?"
20 (E io ti rispondo a te, che dici questo): chi se' tu che dici questa cosa? e che puoi tu rispondere a Dio? non sai tu che il vasello della terra non dice al vasellaio: or perchè mi facesti così?	20 But who indeed are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Will what is made say to its maker,"Why have you created me so?"
21 Or non ha signoria il vasellaio di fare di quella medesima terra uno vasello da onore, e un altro da sozzura?	21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for a noble purpose and another for an ignoble one?
22 Ma se ciò è, che Dio voglia mostrare la sua ira, e voglia mostrare la sua potenza, ch' egli sostiene la vasella dell' ira, le quali sono preparate a perdizione, con grande pazienza,	22 What if God, wishing to show his wrath and make known his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction?
23 per dimostrare le dovizie della sua gloria nelle vasella di misericordia, le quali egli hae apparecchiato alla gloria.	23 This was to make known the riches of his glory to the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared previously for glory,
24 Intra i quali Dio ha chiamati noi, non solamente (chiamati) dalla gente de' giudei, ma eziandio (chiama) dall' altre genti,	24 namely, us whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles.
25 secondo ch' egli dice per lo profeta Osee: io chiamerò mia gente quella che non era mia gente; e chiamerò mia amica quella che non era mia amica; e quella che non trovava misericordia sarà chiamata, e troverà misericordia.	25 As indeed he says in Hosea: "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people,' and her who was not beloved I will call 'beloved.'
26 E in quello luogo ove le fu detto: tu non sei mia gente, sì le sarà detto (a questa gente): voi siete figliuoli di Dio vivo.	26 And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' there they shall be called children of the living God."
27 E Isaia (profeta) sì chiama per li figliuoli d' Israel, (e dice): se sarà il numero de' figliuoli d'Israel secondo ch' è l'arena del mare, lo rimamente sarà salvo.	27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "Though the number of the Israelites were like the sand of the sea, only a remnant will be saved;
28 E Dio sì abbrevia la sua parola con dirittezza, e compiela bene; imperò ch' egli farà sopra la terra una parola abbreviata.	28 for decisively and quickly will the Lord execute sentence upon the earth."
29 E secondo che dice (ancora) di sopra quel medesimo Isaia: se il Signore delle virtù non ci avesse lasciato il (suo) seme, noi saressimo come Sodoma e Gomorra.	29 And as Isaiah predicted: "Unless the Lord of hosts had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom and have been made like Gomorrah."
30 Adunque che diremo (di questo)? che l' altre genti, che non andavano dopo la giustizia, [appresero la giustizia], la quale è secondo la fede (di Cristo).	30 What then shall we say? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have achieved it, that is, righteousness that comes from faith;
31 E li figliuoli d' Israel (cioè li iudei) li quali andavano per la via della giustizia (della legge) non poterono (trovare nè) venire alla legge della giustizia.	31 but that Israel, who pursued the law of righteousness, did not attain to that law?
32 Perchè fu questo? perchè non è gente fedele; e confidantisi pur nell' opere della legge, ancora sì offendettero, e incapparono nella pietra, cioè in Cristo,	32 Why not? Because they did it not by faith, but as if it could be done by works. They stumbled over the stone that causes stumbling,
33 secondo ch' è scritto: ecco io porroe (dice Dio) nella città di Sion la pietra dell' offendimento, e la pietra del scandolo; e ogni uomo che crederà in quello non riceverà vergogna	33 as it is written: "Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion that will make people stumble and a rock that will make them fall, and whoever believes in him shall not be put to shame."
