1 Ma tu, Iddio nostro, se' soave e vero e paziente, e che disponi tutte le cose in misericordia.	1 But you, our God, are good and true, slow to anger, and governing all with mercy.
2 E imperciò, se noi pecchiamo, noi siamo pure tuoi, e sappiamo la grandezza tua; e se noi non pecchiamo, noi sappiamo che appo te noi siamo computati.	2 For even if we sin, we are yours, and know your might; but we will not sin, knowing that we belong to you.
3 E il sapere te è consumata giustizia; e conoscere la giustizia e la virtù tua è radice di immortalitade.	3 For to know you well is complete justice, and to know your might is the root of immortality.
4 Non indusse noi in errore lo sottigliamento delli uomini della mala arte, nè l'ombra della pittura fatica sanza frutto, la figura intagliata per varii colori;	4 For neither did the evil creation of men's fancy deceive us, nor the fruitless labor of painters, A form smeared with varied colors,
5 la cui vista a diletto del disensato dà desiderio, e ama le imagini della cosa morta sanza anima.	5 the sight of which arouses yearning in the senseless man, till he longs for the inanimate form of a dead image.
6 Degni sono (di morte) li amatori [del] le cose malfatte, li quali hanno speranza in cotali cose, e chi fanno quelle imagini, e coloro che le adorano che le amano.	6 Lovers of evil things, and worthy of such hopes are they who make them and long for them and worship them.
7 Ma il figolaio, che preme la terra molle, faticosamente compone (li vasi) al nostro uso ciascuno vaso; e d' una medesima terra compone quelli vasi che sono mondi in uso, e similmente quelli che sono contrarii a questi; quale sia l'uso di questi vasi, il pentolaio stesso n'è giudice.	7 For truly the potter, laboriously working the soft earth, molds for our service each several article: Both the vessels that serve for clean purposes and their opposites, all alike; As to what shall be the use of each vessel of either class the worker in clay is the judge.
8 Elli compone di quella medesima terra iddio con vana fatica ( ch' elli fae li altri vasi); colui che poco inanzi fatto fue di terra, dopo un poco inganna, ridomandando il debito dell' anima ch' elli avea.	8 And with misspent toil he molds a meaningless god from the selfsame clay; though he himself shortly before was made from the earth And after a little, is to go whence he was taken, when the life that was lent him is demanded back.
9 Ma la cura sua è, non ch' elli deve lavorare, nè come elli è piccola vita, ma contendendosi colli orefici e colli argentieri, e' sèguitali; e antimette la fama sua, però ch' elli compone cose di soperchio vane.	9 But his concern is not that he is to die nor that his span of life is brief; Rather, he vies with goldsmiths and silversmiths and emulates molders of bronze, and takes pride in modeling counterfeits.
10 Cenere è il cuore suo; e la speranza sua sì è terra vana, e la vita sua sì è più vile del fango.	10 Ashes his heart is! more worthless than earth is his hope, and more ignoble than clay his life;
11 Però ch' egli non sa colui che il fece, e chi mise in lui l'anima, e chi soffioe in lui spirito vitale (e adora quelle cose ch' elli lavoroe).	11 Because he knew not the one who fashioned him, and breathed into him a quickening soul, and infused a vital spirit.
12 Ma loro stimarono la vita nostra essere concupiscenza; e che la conversazione della vita fusse composta al guadagno, e che bisogno era che ciascuno eziandio di male acquistasse.	12 Instead, he esteemed our life a plaything, and our span of life a holiday for gain; "For one must," says he, "make profit every way, be it even out of evil."
13 Colui conosce sopra tutti sè peccare, il quale. della materia di terra compone li vasi fragili e idoli.	13 For this man more than any knows that he is sinning, when out of earthen stuff he creates fragile vessels and idols alike.
14 Tutti disavventurati, oltra modo sono superbi sopra la condizione dell' anima sua, i nimici del popolo tuo, e [coloro che] signoreggiano quello.	14 But all quite senseless, and worse than childish in mind, are the enemies of your people who enslaved them.
15 Però ch' egli stimarono che tutti li idoli delle nazioni fussono iddii, li quali non hanno lume d' occhi a vedere, nè nari da odorare, nè orecchie da udire, nè mani da palpare, e li loro piedi sono pigri ad andare.	15 For they esteemed all the idols of the nations gods, which have no use of the eyes for vision, nor nostrils to snuff the air, Nor ears to hear, nor fingers on their hands for feeling; even their feet are useless to walk with.
16 L'uomo fece loro, e colui a cui fu prestata la vita. Nullo uomo potrà (possibilmente) componere Iddio simile a sè.	16 For a man made them; one whose spirit has been lent him fashioned them. For no man succeeds in fashioning a god like himself;
17 Conciosia cosa ch' elli sia cosa mortale, elli compone cosa morta colle mani inique; più vale egli, che colui ch' egli adora, però ch' egli per certo vivette, conciosia cosa ch' elli sia mortale; ma li idoli non vivettono mai.	17 being mortal, he makes a dead thing with his lawless hands. For he is better than the things he worships; he at least lives, but never they.
18 Ma elli, miserissimi, adorano li animali; e cose sanza sentimento, assomigliate a queste, peggiori sono di queste.	18 And besides, they worship the most loathsome beasts-- for compared as to folly, these are worse than the rest,
19 Ma ancora non puote vedere per ragguardamento, alcuno di questi animali, cosa buona. Fuggirono la laude di Dio, e la benedizione sua.	19 Nor for their looks are they good or desirable beasts, but they have escaped both the approval of God and his blessing.
