BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Queste son le parole che Mosè rivolse a tutto Israele di là dal Giordano, nel deserto, nella pianura di faccia al Mar Rosso, tra Faran, Tofel, Laban e Haserot, dov'è moltissimo oro.	1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.
2 Dall'Oreb a Cadesbarne, per la via del monte di Seir, vi è la distanza di undici giornate di cammino.	2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.
3 Nell'anno quarantesimo, nell'undecimo mese, al primo del mese, Mosè disse ai figli d'Israele tutto quello che il Signore gli aveva comandato di dir loro,	3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.
4 e lo fece dopo avere sconfitto Sehon re degli Amorrei, che abitava in Esebon, e Og re di Basan, che, abitava in Astarot e in Edrai,	4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.
5 al di là del Giordano, nella terra di Moab. E Mosè prese a spiegar la legge e disse:	5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:
6 « Il Signore Dio nostro parlò a noi sull'Oreb, dicendo: Vi siete fermati abbastanza a questo monte:	6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
7 or movetevi ed avviatevi verso il monte degli Amorrei e i luoghi vicini, verso le pianure, le montagne e le valli, e il mezzodì, e il littorale, verso la terra dei Cananei, e verso il Libano fino al gran fiume Eufrate.	7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.
8 Ecco ve l'ho data: entratevi, e possedete la terra che il Signore giurò di dare ai vostri padri Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, e ai loro discendenti dopo di loro.	8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."
9 E in quel tempo io vi dissi:	9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.
10 Non vi posso portare da solo, perche, avendovi il Signore Dio vostro moltiplicati, oggi siete in gran numero come le stelle del cielo,	10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.
11 Il Signore Dio dei padri vostri vi moltiplichi ancora per migliaia, e vi benedica, come ha detto;	11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.
12 ma io non posso da solo reggere ai vostri affari, alla fatica, alle liti.	12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?
13 Sceglietemi tra voi degli uomini saggi e sperimentati e di ottima fama nelle vostre tribù, che li costituisca vostri capi.	13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."
14 Allora voi mi rispondeste: Tu proponi un'ottima cosa.	14 You replied, "Your plan is good."
15 Ed io presi dalle vostre tribù degli uomini saggi e nobili, e li costituii principi, tribuni, capi di cento, di cinquanta, di dieci uomini, perchè v'insegnassero ogni cosa.	15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.
16 E diedi loro quest'ordine: Ascoltateli e giudicate secondo il giusto, tanto se si tratta d'un cittadino che d'un forestiero.	16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.
17 Non abbiate riguardi personali; ascoltate il piccolo come il grande, senza accettazione di persone, perchè è il giudizio di Dio. Le cose più difficili deferitele a me, e le sentirò io.	17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.
18 E ordinai allora ciò che dovevate fare.	18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."
19 Partiti poi dall'Oreb, attraversammo quel terribile e grandissimo deserto che avete veduto, e, andando verso il monte degli Amorrei, come il Signore Dio nostro ei aveva comandato, giungemmo a Cadesbarne.	19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.
20 Ove io vi dissi: Siete giunti al monte degli Amorrei che il Signore Dio nostro sta per darci.	20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.
21 Mira la terra che ti dà il Signore Dio tuo: sali e prendine possesso, come disse il Signore Dio nostro ai tuoi padri: non temere e non aver paura di nulla.	21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."
22 Allora, accostandovi tutti a me, diceste: Mandiamo degli uomini che esplorino la terra e ci riferiscano per qual via dovremo salire e verso quali città incamminarci.	22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."
23 Essendomi piaciuto tale discorso, mandai dodici uomini di tra voi, uno per tribù.	23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.
24 Quelli andarono, e traversati i monti, giunsero fin nella Valle del Grappolo; ed esplorato il paese	24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.
25 ne presero dei frutti per mostrarne la fecondità, li portarono a noi e dissero: È buona davvero la terra che il Signore Dio nostro sta per darci.	25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."
26 Ma voi non voleste salire, e, increduli alle parole del Signore Dio nostro,	26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.
27 vi metteste a mormorare nelle vostre tende e a dire: Perchè ci odia, il Signore ci ha tratti dalla terra d'Egitto, per darci nelle mani degli Amorrei e sterminarci.	27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.
28 Dove dobbiamo salire? Gli esploratori hanno atterrito il nostro cuore col dire: Quella gente, è numerosa e più alta di noi; le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; vi abbiamo veduto i figli di Enac.	28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."
29 E io vi dissi: Non temete: non abbiate paura di loro:	29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.
30 il Signore Dio, che è la vostra guida, combatterà lui per voi, come fece in Egitto a vista di tutti,	30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.
31 e nel deserto, dove, come tu stesso hai veduto, il Signore Dio tuo ti ha portato come un uomo sul portare il suo bambino, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto fino a questo luogo.	31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."
32 Ma nemmeno dopo tutto questo voi credeste al Signore Dio vostro,	32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,
33 che vi precedette nel cammino, e vi preparò il luogo ove dovevate piantar le tende, e vi mostrò la strada, di notte col fuoco, di giorno colla colonna di nube.	33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.
34 Ma avendo il Signore udite le vostre parole, sdegnato giurò e disse:	34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,
35 Nessuno degli uomini di questa generazione perversa vedrà quell'ottima terra da me promessa con giuramento ai padri vostri,	35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,
36 Eeccetto Caleb figlio di Iefone. Egli la vedrà: a lui ed ai suoi figli darò la terra che egli ha calcato, perchè è stato fedele al Signore.	36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."
37 Nè deve far maraviglia questo sdegno contro il popolo, perchè il Signore, sdegnatosi contro di me per causa vostra, disse: Neanche tu c'entrerai:	37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.
38 v'entrerà in vece tua Giosuè figlio di Nun, tuo ministro: esortalo e fagli coraggio, chè egli dividerà a sorte la terra a Israele.	38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.
39 I vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto che sarebbero menati schiavi, i vostri figli che oggi non distinguono il bene dal male, essi c'entreranno, a loro la darò, e la possederanno;	39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.
40 ma voi tornate indietro, andate nel deserto, verse il Mar Rosso.	40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."
41 E voi mi rispondeste: Abbiamo pecato contro il Signore; ma ora saliremo e combatteremo, come il Signore Dio nostro ha ordinato. Mentre però, prese le armi, vi mettevate in marcia verso il monte,	41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.
42 il Signore mi disse: Di' loro: Non salite, non combattete; perchè io non son con voi, non vogliate cadere davanti ai vostri nemici.	42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."
43 Io ve lo dissi, ma non deste retta; anzi, contro l'ordine del Signore, gonfi di superbia saliste sul monte.	43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.
44 Allora l'Amorreo che abitava quei monti vi uscì incontro e v'inseguì come fanno le api, e vi tagliò a pezzi da Seir ad Dorma.	44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.
45 Il vostro ritorno voi piangeste dinanzi al Signore: ma egli non vi diè ascolto nè volle arrendersi alla, vostra, vare.	45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.
46 Così rimaneste a Cadesbarne por lungo tempo,	46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'
