1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.	1 O smrti, kako je gorka pomisao na te čovjeku koji živi sretno i usred dobara svojih, čovjeku koji živi spokojno i u svemu napreduje i još ima snage uživati raskoš!
2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.	2 O smrti, odluka je tvoja dobrodošla čovjeku ubogu i bez snage, istrošenu starcu, izmorenu brigama, nevjeričnu i na kraju strpljivosti.
3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.	3 Ne boj se zakona smrti, sjeti se onih prije tebe i onih što će poslije doći.
4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.	4 To je presuda Gospodnja svemu živom – i čemu se opirati volji Svevišnjega? Živio ti deset, stotinu ili tisuću godina, u podzemlju ti neće predbacivati dužinu života.
5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.	5 Opake su hulje sinovi grešnika i oni koji zalaze u nastambe bezbožničke.
6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.	6 Baština djece grešničke na propast je osuđena, potomstvo njihovo predmet je vječna ukora.
7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.	7 Bezbožna oca proklinju vlastita djeca, jer su zbog njega u sramoti.
8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.	8 Teško vama, bezbožnici, koji zapostavljate zakon Boga svevišnjega.
9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.	9 Ako ste se rodili, za prokletstvo se rodiste, a kad umrete, prokletstvo ćete baštiniti.
10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.	10 Sve što je od zemlje u zemlju se vraća, tako i bezbožnici iz prokletstva u propast.
11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.	11 Ljudi žale za svojim mrtvima, ali će opako ime grešnika nestati.
12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;	12 Brini se za ime, jer ti ono ostaje dulje nego tisuće velikih zlatnih zaloga.
13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.	13 Sretan život traje stanovit broj dana, ali časno ime ostaje zauvijek.
14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:	14 Držite, djeco, pouke moje u miru. Skrivena mudrost i blago nevidljivo, kakva je korist od obojega?
15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;	15 Bolji je čovjek koji krije ludost svoju negoli koji krije mudrost svoju.
16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;	16 Stidite se prema onome što vam govorim, jer nije dobro svakom stidu podlijegati niti svi jednako cijene sve.
17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.	17 Pred ocem i majkom stidi se bludnosti i laži pred poglavarom i moćnikom,
18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;	18 zločina pred sucem i knezom, bezakonja pred općinom i narodom,
19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,	19 nepravde pred drugom i prijateljem, krađe pred susjedstvom u kojem živiš.
20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;	20 Pred istinom Božjom i zavjetom stidi se naslanjati lakte na stol,
21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;	21 prezirno primati i darivati i ne odgovarati onima koji te pozdravljaju;
22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;	22 stidi se piljiti u tuđu ženu i okrenuti leđa rođaku,
23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--	23 prisvojiti tuđi dio ili dar, udvarati se udanoj ženi,
24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.	24 biti prisan sa sluškinjom njezinom: ne prilazi njezinoj postelji!
	25 Stidi se riječi pogrde pred prijateljima svojim i nemoj kuditi nakon darivanja,
	26 ponavljati i širiti glasine i izdavati tajne.
	27 Tad ćeš biti istinski stidljiv i naći ćeš milost u očima sviju ljudi.
