1 Ekkor azonban Efraimban lázadás támadt. Átmentek ugyanis északra és azt mondták Jeftének: »Miért nem hívtál minket, amikor hadba vonultál Ammon fiai ellen, hogy veled menjünk? Ezért felgyújtjuk házadat!«	1 The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire."
2 Ő ezt felelte nekik: »Nagy perünk volt, nekem és népemnek, Ammon fiaival, hívtalak is titeket, hogy nyújtsatok segítséget, de ti nem akartátok megtenni.	2 And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people had a great feud with the Ammonites; and when I called you, you did not deliver me from their hand.
3 Amikor ezt láttam, kockára tettem életemet, s átvonultam Ammon fiai elé, s az Úr kezembe is adta őket. Mivel érdemeltem meg, hogy hadba szálltok ellenem?«	3 And when I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hand, and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my hand; why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?"
4 Aztán magához hívatta Gileád valamennyi emberét, s harcba bocsátkozott Efraimmal. Gileád emberei megverték Efraimot. Azt mondták ugyanis: »A gileádiak Efraimból menekültek el, s úgy telepedtek meg Efraim és Manassze között.« –	4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, "You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh."
5 A gileádiak ezután megszállták a Jordán átkelőit, amelyeken Efraim vissza akart térni. Amikor aztán egy-egy menekülő efraimi odajött és azt mondta: »Kérlek titeket, hadd menjek át« – a gileádiak megkérdezték tőle: »Efraimi vagy?« Ha azt mondta: »Nem«,	5 And the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, "Let me go over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When he said, "No,"
6 akkor felszólították: »Mondd ki tehát: Sibbólet« – ami annyit jelent, mint kalász. Aki azt felelte: »Szibbólet«, mert ugyanazt a hangot a kalász szóban kiejteni nem tudta, azt legott megfogták, s ott a Jordán átkelőjénél megölték. Negyvenkétezren estek el abban az időben Efraimból.	6 they said to him, "Then say Shibboleth," and he said, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it right; then they seized him and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites.
7 Hat esztendeig bíráskodott a gileádi Jefte Izraelen, aztán meghalt, és eltemették városában, Gileádban.	7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in his city in Gilead.
8 Utána a betlehemi Ibszán bíráskodott Izraelen.	8 After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
9 Ennek harminc fia és ugyanannyi lánya volt; utóbbiakat idegenbe küldte és adta férjhez, fiainak pedig ugyanannyi számú feleséget szerzett és hozta be házába. Hét esztendeig bíráskodott Izraelen,	9 He had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
10 aztán meghalt, és eltemették Betlehemben.	10 Then Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem.
11 Utána a Zebulonból való Élon következett. Ez tíz esztendeig bíráskodott Izraelen,	11 After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.
12 aztán meghalt, és eltemették Zebulonban.	12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 Utána a fárátoni Abdon, Hillél fia bíráskodott Izraelen.	13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.
14 Negyven fia, azoktól pedig harminc unokája volt; ezek hetven szamárcsikón lovagoltak. Nyolc esztendeig bíráskodott Izraelen,	14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy asses; and he judged Israel eight years.
15 aztán meghalt, és eltemették Fárátonban, Efraim földjén, az amalekiták hegységén.	15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
