1 Amikor ezt Adonicedek, Jeruzsálem királya meghallotta, azt tudniillik, hogy Józsue Áit bevette és feldúlta (ahogy ugyanis Jerikóval s királyával cselekedett, úgy cselekedett Ái-jal és királyával is), s hogy a gibeaiak átszöktek Izraelhez és szövetségesei lettek,	1 When Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
2 igen megijedt. Nagy város volt ugyanis Gibeon, olyan, mint a királyi városok, nagyobb Ái városánál, s harcosai mindannyian igazi hősök voltak.	2 he feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
3 Éppen azért elküldött Adonicedek, Jeruzsálem királya Ohámhoz, Hebron királyához, Fárámhoz, Jerimót királyához, Jáfiához, Lákis királyához és Debirhez, Eglon királyához és azt üzente:	3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4 »Jöjjetek fel hozzám, nyújtsatok segítséget és verjük meg Gibeont, amiért átszökött Józsuéhoz s Izrael fiaihoz.«	4 "Come up to me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel."
5 Összegyűlt és felvonult tehát az amoriták öt királya: Jeruzsálem királya, Hebron királya, Jerimót királya, Lákis királya, Eglon királya seregükkel együtt, s tábort ütöttek Gibeon körül, s ostrom alá vették.	5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces, and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.
6 Erre Gibeonnak, az ostromlott városnak lakói elküldtek Józsuéhoz, aki akkor Gilgálban táborozott és azt üzenték neki: »Ne vond meg segítő kezedet szolgáidtól: jöjj gyorsan fel és szabadíts meg minket, s hozz segítséget, mert összegyűlt ellenünk a Hegyvidéken lakó amoriták valamennyi királya.«	6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not relax your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country are gathered against us."
7 Felvonult tehát Józsue Gilgálból, s vele a harcosok egész serege, a legvitézebb férfiak.	7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.
8 Azt mondta ekkor az Úr Józsuénak: »Ne félj tőlük, mert a kezedbe adtam őket: senki sem tud majd közülük ellenállni neked.«	8 And the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; there shall not a man of them stand before you."
9 Józsue váratlanul rájuk is rontott, miután egész éjszaka menetelt Gilgálból.	9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal.
10 Az Úr megzavarta őket Izrael színe előtt, és Izrael súlyos vereséget mért rájuk Gibeonnál, majd tovább űzte őket a Béthoronba vezető hegyi úton, és verte őket Azekáig és Makkedáig.	10 And the LORD threw them into a panic before Israel, who slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11 Miközben pedig azok Izrael fiai elől menekültek, s a béthoroni lejtőn voltak, az Úr nagy köveket hullatott rájuk az égből egészen Azekáig, úgyhogy többen haltak meg a jégeső köveitől, mint amennyit Izrael fiai öltek meg karddal.	11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw down great stones from heaven upon them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died because of the hailstones than the men of Israel killed with the sword.
12 Akkor így szólt Józsue az Úrhoz, azon a napon, amelyen odaadta az amoritákat Izrael fiainak színe elé, és azt mondta előttük: »Nap, ne mozdulj Gibeon felé, és hold Ajjalon völgye felé!«	12 Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the men of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand thou still at Gibeon, and thou Moon in the valley of Aijalon."
13 Erre megállt a nap és hold, amíg a nemzet bosszút nem állt ellenségein. Vajon nincs ez megírva az Igazak könyvében? Megállt tehát a Nap az ég közepén, s nem sietett lenyugodni egy teljes napig.	13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
14 Nem volt olyan hosszú nap sem azelőtt, sem azután, mint amikor az Úr engedett az ember szavának és harcolt Izraelért. –	14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD hearkened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.
15 Józsue aztán egész Izraellel együtt visszatért a táborba, Gilgálba.	15 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
16 Maga az öt király azonban elfutott és elrejtőzött Makkeda városának barlangjában.	16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
17 Amikor aztán jelentették Józsuénak, hogy megtalálták az öt királyt, elrejtőzve Makkeda városának barlangjában,	17 And it was told Joshua, "The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah."
18 ő megparancsolta társainak: »Hengerítsetek nagy köveket a barlang szájához, s rendeljetek melléje ügyes férfiakat, hogy őrizzék a bezártakat.	18 And Joshua said, "Roll great stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them;
19 Ti azonban ne álljatok meg, hanem űzzétek az ellenséget, s vágjátok a menekülő utócsapatokat, s ne engedjétek, hogy városaik oltalmába jussanak, mert az Úr, a ti Istenetek a kezetekbe adta őket.«	19 but do not stay there yourselves, pursue your enemies, fall upon their rear, do not let them enter their cities; for the LORD your God has given them into your hand."
20 Amikor aztán megverték az ellenséget, s nagy vereséget okoztak neki és csaknem egy szálig megsemmisítették, s akik el tudtak menekülni Izrael elől, bevonultak a megerősített városokba:	20 When Joshua and the men of Israel had finished slaying them with a very great slaughter, until they were wiped out, and when the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,
21 visszatért az egész sereg Józsuéhoz Makkedába, ahol akkor a tábor állt, épen és teljes számban és senki sem mert Izrael fiai ellen támadni.	21 all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah; not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.
22 Ekkor Józsue megparancsolta: »Nyissátok ki a barlang száját, s hozzátok ki hozzám azt az öt királyt, aki benne rejtőzik.«	22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave."
23 Szolgái úgy is tettek, ahogy parancsolta nekik, s kivitték hozzá a barlangból az öt királyt: Jeruzsálem királyát, Hebron királyát, Jerimót királyát, Lákis királyát, Eglon királyát.	23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 Amikor aztán kivezették őket hozzá, előhívta Izrael minden férfiát, s azt mondta a sereg vezéreinek, akik vele voltak: »Menjetek, s tegyétek rá lábatokat ezeknek a királyoknak a nyakára.« Azok odamentek, legyűrték őket és lábukkal taposták nyakukat.	24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings." Then they came near, and put their feet on their necks.
25 Azt mondta ekkor nekik: »Ne féljetek, ne rettegjetek, legyetek erősek és bátrak, mert így tesz majd az Úr minden ellenségetekkel, akik ellen hadakoztok.«	25 And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and of good courage; for thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight."
26 Aztán Józsue leüttette és megölette őket, majd felakasztotta őket öt fára, s ott voltak felakasztva estig.	26 And afterward Joshua smote them and put them to death, and he hung them on five trees. And they hung upon the trees until evening;
27 Amikor aztán a nap leszállóban volt, megparancsolta társainak, hogy vegyék le őket a bitókról. Azok levették, s bedobták őket abba a barlangba, amelyben elrejtőztek, s hatalmas köveket helyeztek a szájához, amelyek megvannak mindmáig.	27 but at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set great stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
28 Ugyanazon a napon Józsue Makkedát is bevette és kardélre hányta, és megölte királyát és minden lakosát: a legkisebbet sem hagyta ott életben, aztán úgy tett Makkeda királyával, amint Jerikó királyával tett.	28 And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed every person in it, he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Makkedából aztán átment egész Izraellel együtt Libnába és hadakozott ellene,	29 Then Joshua passed on from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah;
30 s azt az Úr Izrael kezébe adta királyával együtt, s kardélre hányták a várost s minden lakóját és senkit sem hagytak ott életben. Aztán úgy tettek Libna királyával, amint Jerikó királyával cselekedtek.	30 and the LORD gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Libnából egész Izraellel együtt átment Lákisba és felállította körülötte seregét és ostrom alá vette.	31 And Joshua passed on from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and laid siege to it, and assaulted it:
32 Az Úr Izraelnek kezébe is adta Lákist. Az másnap elfoglalta, kardélre hányt és felkoncolt minden élőt, amely benne volt, úgy, ahogy Libnával tett.	32 and the LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 Ekkor feljött Hórám, Gézer királya, hogy segítséget nyújtson Lákisnak, de Józsue megverte őt egész népével együtt, mind egy szálig.	33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he left none remaining.
34 Lákisból aztán átment Eglonba és körülvette	34 And Joshua passed on with all Israel from Lachish to Eglon; and they laid siege to it, and assaulted it;
35 és még aznap bevette. Kardélre hányt minden élőt, amely benne volt, egészen úgy, ahogy Lákissal tett.	35 and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and every person in it he utterly destroyed that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 Eglonból aztán felment egész Izraellel együtt Hebronba, és hadakozott ellene.	36 Then Joshua went up with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron; and they assaulted it,
37 Bevette azt, és kardélre hányta királyával és vidékének minden városával együtt, felkoncolt minden élőt, amely ott tartózkodott. Nem hagyott ott senkit sem életben. Ahogy Eglonnal cselekedett, úgy tett Hebronnal is: mindazt, amit benne talált, elpusztította karddal.	37 and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it; he left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it with every person in it.
38 Innen Debir felé fordult,	38 Then Joshua, with all Israel, turned back to Debir and assaulted it,
39 bevette azt, és feldúlta. A királyát és a körülötte levő összes várost kardélre hányta, nem hagyott benne senkit sem életben. Amint Hebronnal, Libnával és azok királyával tett, úgy cselekedett Debirrel és királyával is.	39 and he took it with its king and all its towns; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person in it; he left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.
40 Így verte meg Józsue az egész földet: a Hegyvidéket, a Délvidéket, az Alföldet, a Lejtőket királyukkal együtt; nem hagyott rajta senkit sem életben, hanem mindenkit megölt, aki lélegzett, amint az Úr, Izrael Istene megparancsolta neki,	40 So Joshua defeated the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings; he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
41 Kádes-Barneától Gázáig és Gósen egész földjén Gibeonig.	41 And Joshua defeated them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.
42 Mindezeket a királyokat és földjüket egy felvonulás során vette be, s pusztította el, mert az Úr, Izrael Istene hadakozott érte.	42 And Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 Aztán visszatért egész Izraellel a tábor helyére, Gilgálba.	43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
