1 Amikor aztán Atália, Ahaszja anyja, megtudta, hogy a fia meghalt, felkelt s megölette az összes királyi ivadékot.	1 Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family.
2 Jósába, Jórám király lánya, Ahaszja nővére, azonban vette Joást, Ahaszja fiát és ellopta a király megölésre szánt fiai közül dajkájával együtt az ágyasházból s elrejtette Atália elől, hogy meg ne öljék.	2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons who were about to be slain, and she put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. Thus she hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not slain;
3 Hat esztendeig aztán magánál rejtegette az Úr házában, miközben Atália uralkodott az országon.	3 and he remained with her six years, hid in the house of the LORD, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
4 A hetedik esztendőben aztán elküldött Jojáda, s magához hozatta a századosokat s a vitézeket, bevitte őket magához az Úr templomába, és szövetséget kötött velük s megeskette őket az Úr házában. Majd megmutatta nekik a király fiát,	4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of the Carites and of the guards, and had them come to him in the house of the LORD; and he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the LORD, and he showed them the king's son.
5 s parancsolt nekik: »Ezt kell tennetek:	5 And he commanded them, "This is the thing that you shall do: one third of you, those who come off duty on the sabbath and guard the king's house
6 Ha szombaton szolgálatba léptek, harmadrészetek lássa el a királyi palota őrizetét, harmadrészetek legyen a Szúr kapunál s harmadrészetek a pajzsosok laktanyája mögött levő kapunál s lássátok el váltakozva a templom őrizetét.	6 (another third being at the gate Sur and a third at the gate behind the guards), shall guard the palace;
7 Két rész eddig közületek, vagyis mindazok, akik szombaton a szolgálatból kilépnek, lássák el az Úr házának őrizetét a király körül.	7 and the two divisions of you, which come on duty in force on the sabbath and guard the house of the LORD,
8 Vegyétek őt körül fegyverrel kezetekben – ha valaki behatol a templom elkerített részébe –, öljétek meg, s legyetek a király körül jártában-keltében.«	8 shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever approaches the ranks is to be slain. Be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in."
9 A századosok egészen úgy is cselekedtek, ahogy Jojáda pap parancsolta nekik: mindegyik maga mellé vette embereit, azokat, akik szombaton szolgálatba léptek, azokkal együtt, akik szombaton a szolgálatból kiléptek s elmentek Jojáda paphoz,	9 The captains did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and each brought his men who were to go off duty on the sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
10 az pedig odaadta nekik Dávid király dárdáit s fegyvereit, amelyek az Úr házában voltak.	10 And the priest delivered to the captains the spears and shields that had been King Davids, which were in the house of the LORD;
11 Aztán felálltak, mindenki fegyverrel a kezében, a templom jobb oldalától az oltár és a templom bal oldaláig a király körül.	11 and the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house.
12 Erre ő kivezette a királyfit, rátette a koronát s a bizonyságot, aztán királlyá tették és felkenték s tapsolva mondták: »Éljen a király.«	12 Then he brought out the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they proclaimed him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, "Long live the king!"
13 Amint Atália meghallotta a futkosó nép lármáját, bement a sokasághoz az Úr templomába.	13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the LORD to the people;
14 Amikor látta, hogy a király az emelvényen áll, amint szokás, mellette énekesek és trombitások s a föld egész népe ujjong és trombitál, megszaggatta ruháit és kiáltotta: »Összeesküvés, összeesküvés!«	14 and when she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. And Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, "Treason! Treason!"
15 Erre Jojáda pap parancsolt azoknak a századosoknak, akik a sereg parancsnokai voltak és azt mondta nekik: »Vezessétek ki őt a templom bekerített részéből, s aki utána megy, öljétek meg kardotokkal.« Azt mondotta ugyanis a pap: »Ne az Úr templomában öljétek meg.«	15 Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains who were set over the army, "Bring her out between the ranks; and slay with the sword any one who follows her." For the priest said, "Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD."
16 Erre kezet vetettek rá s kituszkolták azon az úton, amelyen a lovak a palotába járnak s ott megölték.	16 So they laid hands on her; and she went through the horses' entrance to the king's house, and there she was slain.
17 Aztán Jojáda szövetséget szerzett az Úr között meg a király és a nép között, hogy az Úr népe lesznek; és a király meg a nép között.	17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and people, that they should be the LORD's people; and also between the king and the people.
18 Erre bement a föld egész népe Baál templomába s lerontották oltárait s teljesen összetörték képeit, Mattánt, Baál papját pedig megölték az oltár előtt. Aztán a pap őrséget rendelt az Úr házába,	18 Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal, and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest posted watchmen over the house of the LORD.
19 majd vette a századosokat meg a keretiek és feletiek seregeit s a föld egész népét s levitték a királyt az Úr házából s a pajzsosok kapujának útján át bevonultak a palotába s az beült a királyok székébe.	19 And he took the captains, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD, marching through the gate of the guards to the king's house. And he took his seat on the throne of the kings.
20 Erre a föld egész népe örvendezett s a város nyugodt maradt, pedig Atáliát megölték karddal a király házában.	20 So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the king's house.
	21 Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.
