BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Pues bien, a todo eso he aplicado mi corazón y todo lo he explorado, y he visto que los justos y los sabios y sus obras están en manos de Dios. Y ni de amor ni de odio saben los hombres nada: todo les resulta	1 Yes, I have applied myself to all this and experienced all this to be so: that is to say, that the upright andthe wise, with their activities, are in the hands of God. We do not understand either love or hate, where we areconcerned, both of them are
2 absurdo. Como el que haya un destino común para todos, para el justo y para el malvado, el puro y el manchado, el que hace sacrificios y el que no los hace, así el bueno como el pecador, el que jura como el que se recata de jurar.	2 futile. And for all of us is reserved a common fate, for the upright and for the wicked, for the good andfor the bad; whether we are ritually pure or not, whether we offer sacrifice or not: it is the same for the good andfor the sinner, for someone who takes a vow, as for someone who fears to do so.
3 Eso es lo peor de todo cuanto pasa bajo el sol: que haya un destino común para todos, y así el corazón de los humanos está lleno de maldad y hay locura en sus corazones mientras viven, y su final ¡con los muertos!	3 This is another evil among those occurring under the sun: that there should be the same fate foreveryone. The human heart, however, is ful of wickedness; fol y lurks in our hearts throughout our lives, until weend among the dead.
4 Pues mientras uno sigue unido a todos los vivientes hay algo seguro, pues vale más perro vivo que león muerto.	4 But there is hope for someone stil linked to the rest of the living: better be a live dog than a dead lion.
5 Porque los vivos saben que han de morir, pero los muertos no saben nada, y no hay ya paga para ellos, pues se perdió su memoria.	5 The living are at least aware that they are going to die, but the dead know nothing whatever. No morewages for them, since their memory is forgotten.
6 Tanto su amor, como su odio, como sus celos, ha tiempo que pereció, y no tomarán parte nunca jamás en todo lo que pasa bajo el sol.	6 Their love, their hate, their jealousy, have perished long since, and they wil never have any further partin what goes on under the sun.
7 Anda, come con alegría tu pan y bebe de buen grado tu vino, que Dios está ya contento con tus obras.	7 So, eat your bread in joy, drink your wine with a glad heart, since God has already approved youractions.
8 En toda sazón sean tus ropas blancas y no falte ungüento sobre tu cabeza.	8 At al times, dress in white and keep your head wel scented.
9 Vive la vida con la mujer que amas, todo el espacio de tu vana existencia que se te ha dado bajo el sol, ya que tal es tu parte en la vida y en las fatigas con que te afanas bajo el sol.	9 Spend your life with the woman you love, all the days of futile life God gives you under the sun,throughout your futile days, since this is your lot in life and in the effort you expend under the sun.
10 Cualquier cosa que esté a tu alcance el hacerla, hazla según tus fuerzas, porque no existirá obra ni razones ni ciencia ni sabiduría en el seol a donde te encaminas.	10 Whatever work you find to do, do it with al your might, for there is neither achievement, nor planning,nor science, nor wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
11 Vi además que bajo el sol no siempre es de los ligeros el correr ni de los esforzados la pelea; como también hay sabios sin pan, como también discretos sin hacienda, como también hay doctos que no gustan, pues a todos les llega algún mal momento.	11 Another thing I have observed under the sun: that the race is not won by the speediest, nor the battleby the champions; it is not the wise who get food, nor the intel igent wealth, nor the learned favour: chance andmischance befall them all.
12 Porque, además, el hombre ignora su momento: como peces apresados en la red, como pájaros presos en el cepo, así son tratados los humanos por el infortunio cuando les cae encima de improviso.	12 We do not know when our time will come: like fish caught in the treacherous net, like birds caught inthe snare, just so are we al trapped by misfortune when it suddenly overtakes us.
13 También he visto otro acierto bajo el sol, y grande, a juicio mío:	13 Here is another example of the wisdom I have acquired under the sun and it strikes me as important:
14 Una ciudad chiquita, con pocos hombres en ella. Llega un gran rey y le pone cerco, levantando frente a ella empalizadas potentes.	14 There was once a smal town, with only a few inhabitants; a mighty king made war on it, laying siege toit and building great siege-works round it.
15 Encontrábase allí un hombre pobre y sabio. El pudo haber librado la ciudad gracias a su sabiduría, ¡pero nadie paró mientes en aquel pobre!	15 But there was in that town a poverty-stricken sage who by his wisdom saved the town. No oneremembered this poor man afterwards.
16 Y yo me digo: Más vale sabiduría que fuerza; pero la sabiduría del pobre se desprecia y sus palabras no se escuchan.	16 So I say: Wisdom is more effective than brute force, but the wisdom of a poor man is not valued: noone listens to what he has to say.
17 Mejor se oyen las palabras sosegadas de los sabios que los gritos del soberano de los necios.	17 The calm words of the wise make themselves heard above the shouts of someone commanding anarmy of fools.
18 Más vale sabiduría que armas de combate, pero un solo yerro echa a perder mucho bueno.	18 Wisdom is worth more than weapons of war, but a single sin undoes a deal of good.
