1 A los hermanos judíos que viven en Egipto, les saludan sus hermanos judíos que están en Jerusalén y en la región de Judea, deseándoles una paz dichosa.	1 The Jews in Jerusalem and in the land of Judea send greetings to their brethren, the Jews in Egypt, and wish them true peace!
2 Que Dios os llene de bienes y recuerde su alianza con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, sus fieles servidores.	2 May God bless you and remember his covenant with his faithful servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
3 Que a todos os dé corazón para adorarle y cumplir su voluntad con corazón grande y ánimo generoso.	3 May he give to all of you a heart to worship him and to do his will readily and generously.
4 Que abra vuestro corazón a su Ley y a sus preceptos, y os otorgue la paz.	4 May he open your heart to his law and his commandments and grant you peace.
5 Que escuche vuestras súplicas, se reconcilie con vosotros y no os abandone en tiempo de desgracia.	5 May he hear your prayers, and be reconciled to you, and never forsake you in time of adversity.
6 Esto es lo que estamos ahora pidiendo por vosotros.	6 Even now we are praying for you here.
7 Ya el año 169, en el reinado de Demetrio, nosotros, los judíos, os escribimos así: «En lo más grave de la tribulación que ha caído sobre nosotros en estos años, desde que Jasón y sus partidarios traicionaron la tierra santa y el reino,	7 In the reign of Demetrius, the year one hundred and sixty-nine, we Jews wrote to you during the trouble and violence that overtook us in those years after Jason and his followers had revolted against the holy land and the kingdom,
8 incendiaron el portón (del Templo) y derramaron sangre inocente, suplicamos al Señor y hemos sido escuchados. Hemos ofrecido un sacrificio con flor de harina, hemos encendido las lámparas y presentado los panes».	8 setting fire to the gatehouse and shedding innocent blood. But we prayed to the Lord, and our prayer was heard; we offered sacrifices and fine flour; we lighted the lamps and set out the loaves of bread.
9 También ahora os escribimos para que celebréis la fiesta de las Tiendas en el mes de Kisléu. Es el año 188.	9 We are now reminding you to celebrate the feast of Booths in the month of Chislev.
10 Los que están en Jerusalén y en Judea, los ancianos y Judas saludan y desean prosperidad a Aristóbulo, preceptor del rey Tolomeo, del linaje de los sacerdotes ungidos, y a los judíos que están en Egipto.	10 Dated in the year one hundred and eighty-eight. The people of Jerusalem and Judea, the senate, and Judas send greetings and good wishes to Aristobulus, counselor of King Ptolemy and member of the family of the anointed priests, and to the Jews in Egypt.
11 Salvados por Dios de grandes peligros, le damos rendidas gracias, como a quien nos ha guiado en la batalla contra el rey,	11 Since we have been saved by God from grave dangers, we give him great thanks for having fought on our side against the king;
12 ya que El ha arrojado fuera a los que combatían contra la ciudad santa.	12 it was he who drove out those who fought against the holy city.
13 Pues, cuando llegó a Persia su jefe acompañado de un ejército, al parecer invencible, fueron desbaratados en el templo de Nanea, gracias al engaño tramado por los sacerdotes de Nanea.	13 When their leader arrived in Persia with his seemingly irresistible army, they were cut to pieces in the temple of the goddess Nanea through a deceitful stratagem employed by Nanea's priests.
14 Antíoco, y con él sus amigos, llegaron a aquel lugar como tratando de desposarse con la diosa, con objeto de apoderarse, a título de dote, de abundantes riquezas.	14 On the pretext of marrying the goddess, Antiochus with his Friends had come to the place to get its great treasures by way of dowry.
15 Una vez que los sacerdotes del templo de Nanea las hubieron expuesto y que él se hubo presentado con unas pocas personas en el recinto sagrado, cerraron el templo en cuanto entró Antíoco.	15 When the priests of the Nanaeon had displayed the treasures, Antiochus with a few attendants came to the temple precincts. As soon as he entered the temple, the priests locked the doors.
16 Abrieron la puerta secreta del techo y a pedradas aplastaron al jefe; le descuartizaron, y cortándole la cabeza, la arrojaron a los que estaban fuera.	16 Then they opened a hidden trapdoor in the ceiling, hurled stones at the leader and his companions and struck them down. They dismembered the bodies, cut off their heads and tossed them to the people outside.
17 En todo sea bendito nuestro Dios que ha entregado los impíos (a la muerte).	17 Forever blessed be our God, who has thus punished the wicked!
18 A punto de celebrar en el veinticinco de Kisléu la purificación del Templo, nos ha parecido conveniente informaros, para que también vosotros la celebréis como la fiesta de las Tiendas y del fuego aparecido cuando ofreció sacrificios Nehemías, el que construyó el Templo y el altar.	18 We shall be celebrating the purification of the temple on the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev, so we thought it right to inform you, that you too may celebrate the feast of Booths and of the fire that appeared when Nehemiah, the rebuilder of the temple and the altar, offered sacrifices.
19 Pues, cuando nuestros padres fueron llevados a Persia, los sacerdotes piadosos de entonces, habiendo tomado fuego del altar, lo escondieron secretamente en una concavidad semejante a un pozo seco, en el que tan a seguro lo dejaron, que el lugar quedó ignorado de todos.	19 When our fathers were being exiled to Persia, devout priests of the time took some of the fire from the altar and hid it secretly in the hollow of a dry cistern, making sure that the place would be unknown to anyone.
20 Pasados muchos años, cuando a Dios le plugo, Nehemías, enviado por el rey de Persia, mandó que buscaran el fuego los descendientes de los sacerdotes que lo habían escondido;	20 Many years later, when it so pleased God, Nehemiah, commissioned by the king of Persia, sent the descendants of the priests who had hidden the fire to look for it.
21 pero como ellos informaron que en realidad no habían encontrado fuego, sino un líquido espeso, él les mandó que lo sacasen y trajesen. Cuando estuvo dispuesto el sacrificio, Nehemías mandó a los sacerdotes que rociaran con aquel líquido la leña y lo que había colocado sobre ella.	21 When they informed us that they could not find any fire, but only muddy water, he ordered them to scoop some out and bring it. After the material for the sacrifices had been prepared, Nehemiah ordered the priests to sprinkle with the water the wood and what lay on it.
22 Cumplida la orden, y pasado algún tiempo, el sol que antes estaba nublado volvió a brillar, y se encendió una llama tan grande que todos quedaron maravillados.	22 When this was done and in time the sun, which had been clouded over, began to shine, a great fire blazed up, so that everyone marveled.
23 Mientras se consumía el sacrificio, los sacerdotes hacían oración: todos los sacerdotes con Jonatán que comenzaba, y los demás, como Nehemías, respondían.	23 While the sacrifice was being burned, the priests recited a prayer, and all present joined in with them, Jonathan leading and the rest responding with Nehemiah.
24 La oración era la siguiente: «Señor, Señor Dios, creador de todo, temible y fuerte, justo y misericordioso, tú, rey único y bueno,	24 The prayer was as follows: "Lord, Lord God, creator of all things, awesome and strong, just and merciful, the only king and benefactor,
25 tú, solo generoso, solo justo, todopoderoso y eterno, que salvas a Israel de todo mal, que elegiste a nuestros padres y los santificaste,	25 who alone are gracious, just, almighty, and eternal, Israel's savior from all evil, who chose our forefathers and sanctified them:
26 acepta el sacrificio por todo tu pueblo Israel, guarda tu heredad y santifícala.	26 accept this sacrifice on behalf of all your people Israel and guard and sanctify your heritage.
27 Reúne a los nuestros dispersos, da libertad a los que están esclavizados entre las naciones, vuelve tus ojos a los despreciados y abominados, y conozcan los gentiles que tú eres nuestro Dios.	27 Gather together our scattered people, free those who are the slaves of the Gentiles, look kindly on those who are despised and detested, and let the Gentiles know that you are our God.
28 Aflige a los que tiranizan y ultrajan con arrogancia.	28 Punish those who tyrannize over us and arrogantly mistreat us.
29 Planta a tu pueblo en tu lugar santo, como dijo Moisés».	29 Plant your people in your holy place, as Moses promised."
30 Los sacerdotes salmodiaban los himnos.	30 Then the priests began to sing hymns.
31 Cuando fue consumido el sacrificio, Nehemías mandó derramar el líquido sobrante sobre unas grandes piedras.	31 After the sacrifice was burned, Nehemiah ordered the rest of the liquid to be poured upon large stones.
32 Hecho esto, se encendió una llamarada que quedó absorbida por el mayor resplandor que brillaba en el altar.	32 As soon as this was done, a flame blazed up, but its light was lost in the brilliance cast from a light on the altar.
33 Cuando el hecho se divulgó y se refirió al rey de los persas que en el lugar donde los sacerdotes deportados habían escondido el fuego, había aparecido aquel líquido con el que habían santificado las ofrendas del sacrificio Nehemías y sus compañeros,	33 When the event became known and the king of the Persians was told that, in the very place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid was found with which Nehemiah and his people had burned the sacrifices,
34 el rey después de verificar tal hecho mandó alzar una cerca haciendo sagrado el lugar.	34 the king, after verifying the fact, fenced the place off and declared it sacred.
35 El rey recogía grandes sumas y las repartía a quienes quería hacer favores.	35 To those on whom the king wished to bestow favors he distributed the large revenues he received there.
36 Nehemías y sus compañeros llamaron a ese líquido «neftar», que significa «purificación»; pero la mayoría lo llama «nafta».	36 Nehemiah and his companions called the liquid nephthar, meaning purification, but most people named it naphtha.
