1 Fue Roboam a Siquem, porque todo Israel había ido a Siquem para proclamarle rey.	1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to proclaim him king.
2 Apenas lo supo Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, que estaba todavía en Egipto, adonde había ido huyendo del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto,	2 When Jeroboam, son of Nebat, heard of this in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon, he returned from Egypt.
3 pues habían enviado a llamarle. Vino entonces Jeroboam con todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam diciendo:	3 Jeroboam was summoned to the assembly, and he and all Israel said to Rehoboam:
4 «Tu padre ha hecho pesado nuestro yugo; ahora tú aligera la dura servidumbre de tu padre y el pesado yugo que puso sobre nosotros y te serviremos».	4 "Your father laid a heavy yoke upon us. If you now lighten the harsh service and the heavy yoke that your father imposed on us, we will serve you."
5 El les dijo: «Volved a mí de aquí a tres días». Y el pueblo se fue.	5 "In three days," he answered them, "come back to me." When the people had departed,
6 El rey Roboam pidió consejo a los ancianos que habían servido a su padre Salomón, en vida de éste, diciendo: «¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?»	6 King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had been in the service of his father during Solomon's lifetime, asking, "What answer do you advise me to give this people?"
7 Ellos le respondieron: «Si eres bueno con este pueblo y les sirves y les das buenas palabras, serán siervos tuyos para siempre».	7 They replied, "If you will deal kindly with this people and give in to them, acceding to their request, they will be your servants forever."
8 Pero él abandonó el consejo que los ancianos le aconsejaron y pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y estaban a su servicio.	8 But he ignored the advice the elders had given him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were in his service.
9 Les dijo: «¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo que me ha hablado diciendo: “Aligera el yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?”»	9 He said to them, "What answer do you advise me to give this people, who have asked me to lighten the yoke my father imposed on them?"
10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: «Esto debes responder al pueblo que te ha dicho: “Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, ahora tú aligera nuestro yugo”, esto debes responder: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.	10 The young men who had grown up with him replied: "This is the answer you should give to this people who have said to you, 'Your father laid a heavy yoke upon us, but do you lighten our yoke'; this you should say to them: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's body.
11 Un yugo pesado os cargó mi padre, mas yo haré más pesado vuestro yugo; mi padre os ha azotado con azotes, pero yo os azotaré con escorpiones.”»	11 Whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will make it heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!'"
12 Volvieron, pues, Jereboam y todo el pueblo al tercer día donde Roboam, según lo que había dicho el rey: «Volved a mí al tercer día»;	12 On the third day, Jeroboam and all the people came back to King Rehoboam as he had instructed them to do.
13 y el rey les respondió con dureza, abandonando el consejo de los ancianos,	13 Ignoring the advice the elders had given him, the king gave them a harsh answer,
14 y hablándoles según el consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: «Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, yo lo haré más pesado todavía; mi padre os azotó con azotes, pero yo os azotaré con escorpiones».	14 speaking to them according to the advice of the young men: "My father laid a heavy yoke on you, but I will make it heavier. My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions."
15 No escuchó el rey al pueblo, pues se trataba de una intervención de Dios para dar cumplimiento a la palabra que Yahveh había anunciado a Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, por medio de Ajías de Silo.	15 The king would not listen to the people, for this turn of events was divinely ordained to fulfill the prophecy the LORD had uttered to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16 Viendo todo Israel que el rey no le oía, replicó el pueblo al rey diciendo: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Jesé. ¡A tus tiendas, Israel! Mira ahora por tu casa, David». Y todo Israel se fue a sus tiendas.	16 When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king. "What share have we in David? We have no heritage in the son of Jesse. Everyone to your tents, O Israel! Now look to your own house, David!" So all Israel went off to their tents.
17 Roboam reinó sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.	17 Rehoboam, therefore, reigned over only those Israelites who lived in the cities of Judah.
18 El rey Roboam envió a Adoram, jefe de la leva, pero los israelitas le mataron a pedradas y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subir a su carro para huir a Jerusalén.	18 King Rehoboam then sent out Hadoram, who was superintendent of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. Rehoboam himself managed to mount his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.
19 Israel está en desobediencia contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.	19 Thus Israel has been in rebellion against David's house to this day.
