1 Voici les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël au-delà du Jourdain, dans le désert. On était dans la Araba en face de Souf, entre Paran et Tofel, entre Laban, Hasérot et Di-Zahab.	1 These are the words, which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the plain wilderness, over against the Red Sea, between Pharan and Thophel and Laban and Haseroth, where there is very much gold:
2 Il y a onze jours de marche depuis l’Horeb jusqu’à Qadesh-Barné par le chemin de la Montagne de Séïr.	2 Eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Cadesbarne.
3 Le premier jour du onzième mois de la quarantième année, Moïse transmit aux Israélites tout ce que Yahvé lui avait ordonné à leur sujet:	3 In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them:
4 c’était après avoir battu Sihon, roi des Amorites qui habitait à Heshbon, et Og, roi du Bashan, qui habitait à Achtarot et à Édréï.	4 After that he had slain Sehon king of the Amorrhites, who dwelt in Hesebon: and Og king of Basan who abode in Astaroth, and in Edrai,
5 On était de l’autre côté du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, lorsque Moïse décida d’expliquer cette loi. Voici ce qu’il dit:
6 Yahvé notre Dieu nous a parlé à l’Horeb. Vous avez suffisamment séjourné, nous a-t-il dit, au pied de cette montagne.	6 l And you answered me: We have sinned against the Lord: we will go up and fight, as the Lord our God hath commanded. And when you went ready armed unto the mountain,
7 Mettez-vous en route maintenant et partez. Pénétrez dans la montagne des Amorites et tous les pays qui l’entourent: la steppe, la montagne, le Bas-Pays, le Négueb et les côtes de la mer, tout le pays de Canaan et le Liban jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve de l’Euphrate.	7 Beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab. And Moses began to expound the law, and to say:
8 C’est le pays que je mets à votre disposition, le pays que Yahvé a juré à vos pères Abraham, Isaac et Jacob de leur donner, ainsi qu’à leur descendance après eux: allez le conquérir.	8 The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: You have stayed long enough in this mountain:
9 Je vous ai parlé alors et je vous ai dit: “Je ne puis tout seul porter ce peuple.	9 Turn you, and come to the mountain of the Amorrhites, and to the other places that are next to it, the plains and the hills and the vales towards the south, and by the sea shore, the land of the Chanaanites, and of Libanus, as far as the great river Euphrates.
10 Yahvé votre Dieu vous a multipliés et vous êtes aujourd’hui aussi nombreux que les étoiles des cieux.	10 Behold, said he, I have delivered it to you: go in and possess it, concerning which the Lord swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to them, and to their seed after them.
11 Que Yahvé, le Dieu de vos pères, vous multiplie mille fois plus que vous n’êtes et qu’il vous bénisse comme il l’a dit!	11 And I said to you at that time:
12 Mais moi, comment porterai-je seul votre charge et le fardeau de vos querelles?	12 I alone am not able to bear you: for the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and you are this day as the stars of heaven, for multitude.
13 Choisissez parmi vous, dans vos tribus, des hommes sages, intelligents et instruits et je les mettrai à votre tête.”	13 (The Lord God of your fathers add to this number many thousands, and bless you as he hath spoken.)
14 Vous m’avez répondu: “Voilà une bonne proposition.”	14 I alone am not able to bear your business, and the charge of you and your differences.
15 Alors j’ai pris parmi les chefs de vos tribus des hommes sages et instruits et je les ai placés à votre tête comme responsables: chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines, chefs de dizaines, en plus des scribes de vos tribus.	15 Let me have from among you wise and understanding men, and such whose conversation is approved among your tribes, that I may appoint them your rulers.
16 En ce temps-là j’ai donné à vos juges cet ordre: “Vous écouterez vos frères et vous jugerez avec justice les différends qui opposent un homme à son frère ou à un étranger.	16 Then you answered me: The thing is good which thou meanest to do.
17 Vous ne tiendrez pas compte des personnes dans votre jugement. Vous écouterez le petit comme le grand, vous ne craindrez personne, car le jugement est l’affaire de Dieu. Si une affaire est trop difficile pour vous, vous me la soumettrez et je l’étudierai.”	17 And I took out of your tribes men wise and honourable, and appointed them rulers, tribunes, and centurions, and officers over fifties, and over tens, who might teach you all things.
18 Je vous ai donc dit en ce temps-là tout ce que vous deviez faire.	18 And I commanded them, saying: Hear them, and judge that which is just: whether he be one of your country, or a stranger.
19 Nous sommes alors partis de l’Horeb et nous avons abordé, comme Yahvé l’ordonnait, ce désert grand et redoutable que vous avez vu, faisant route vers la montagne des Amorites. C’est ainsi que nous sommes arrivés à Qadesh-Barné.	19 There shall be no difference of persons, you shall hear the little as well as the great: neither shall you respect any man's person, because it is the judgment of God. And if any thing seem hard to you, refer it to me, and I will hear it.
20 Là je vous ai dit: “Vous voici arrivés à cette montagne des Amorites que Yahvé notre Dieu nous donne.	20 And I commanded you all things that you were to do.
21 Vois, Yahvé ton Dieu met ce pays à ta disposition, monte, envahis-le comme Yahvé, le Dieu de tes pères, te l’a dit! Ne crains pas, n’aie pas peur.”	21 And departing from Horeb, we passed through the terrible and vast wilderness, which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorrhite, as the Lord our God had commanded us. And when we were come into Cadesbarne,
22 Alors vous êtes tous venus me trouver et vous m’avez dit: “Envoyons des hommes en éclaireurs pour qu’ils nous fassent une reconnaissance du pays: ils nous renseigneront sur la route par laquelle nous devons monter et sur les villes dans lesquelles nous entrerons.”	22 I said to you: You are come to the mountain of the Amorrhite, which the Lord our God will give to us.
23 La chose me parut bonne et je choisis parmi vous douze hommes, un par tribu.	23 See the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord our God hath spoken to thy fathers: fear not, nor be any way discouraged.
24 Ils se dirigèrent vers la montagne, ils atteignirent le val d’Echkol et ils en firent la reconnaissance.	24 And you came all to me, and said: Let us send men who may view the land, and bring us word what way we shall go up, and to what cities we shall go.
25 Ils prirent avec eux des produits du pays et ils revinrent nous faire leur rapport. Ils nous dirent: “C’est un bon pays que Yahvé notre Dieu nous donne.”	25 And because the saying pleased me, I sent of you twelve men, one of every tribe:
26 Mais vous n’avez pas voulu vous y rendre, vous avez été rebelles à l’ordre de Yahvé votre Dieu.	26 Who, when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains, came as far as the valley of the cluster: and having viewed the land,
27 Sous vos tentes vous avez critiqué, vous avez dit: “C’est parce que Yahvé nous déteste qu’il nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte. Il veut nous livrer entre les mains des Amorites et nous faire mourir.	27 Taking of the fruits thereof, to shew its fertility, they brought them to us, and said: The land is good, which the Lord our God will give us.
28 Où veut-on nous conduire? Nos frères nous ont découragés, ils disent que c’est un peuple plus puissant et plus nombreux que nous, les hommes sont de très haute taille, les villes sont énormes et leurs remparts s’élèvent jusqu’au ciel. Ils y ont même vu des fils d’Anak.”	28 And you would not go up, but being incredulous to the word of the Lord our God,
29 Je vous ai dit alors: “Ne tremblez pas et ne les craignez pas:	29 You murmured in your tents, and said: The Lord hateth us, and therefore he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, that he might deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and destroy us.
30 Yahvé votre Dieu marchera devant vous, il combattra pour vous comme vous l’avez vu faire en Égypte.	30 Whither shall we go up? the messengers have terrified our hearts, saying: The multitude is very great, and taller than we: the cities are great, and walled up td the sky, we have seen the sons of the Enacims there.
31 Vous l’avez vu au désert: Yahvé votre Dieu vous portait comme un homme porte son fils tout au long de la route que vous avez suivie, jusqu’à votre arrivée en ce lieu.	31 And I said to you: Fear not, neither be ye afraid of them:
32 Malgré cela, vous n’avez pas fait confiance à Yahvé votre Dieu.	32 The Lord God, who is your leader, himself will fight for you, as he did in Egypt in the sight of all.
33 Lui pourtant marchait devant vous, il cherchait pour vous le lieu où vous alliez camper. Le jour, par la nuée, il vous montrait la route que vous deviez suivre, et la nuit c’était un feu.”	33 And in the wilderness (as thou hast seen) the Lord thy God hath carried thee, as a man is wont to carry his little son, all the way that you have come, until you came to this place.
34 Quand Yahvé entendit votre vacarme, il se mit en colère et fit ce serment:	34 And yet for all this you did not believe the Lord your God,
35 “Pas un homme de cette génération mauvaise ne verra le bon pays que j’ai juré à vos pères de vous donner.	35 Who went before you in the way, and marked out the place, wherein you should pitch your tents, in the night shewing you the way by fire, and in the day by the pillar of a cloud.
36 Seul Caleb, le fils de Yéfouné, le verra. Ce pays qu’il a foulé, je le lui donnerai et il sera pour ses fils car il m’a suivi fidèlement.”	36 And when the Lord had heard the voice of your words, he was angry and swore, and said:
37 À cause de vous, Yahvé s’est mis également en colère contre moi. Il m’a dit: “Toi non plus tu n’entreras pas là-bas!	37 Not one of the men of this wicked generation shall see the good land, which I promised with an oath to your fathers:
38 C’est Josué, fils de Noun, ton serviteur, qui y entrera. Encourage-le, car c’est lui qui mettra Israël en possession du pays.	38 Except Caleb the son of Jephone: for he shall see it, and to him I will give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath followed the Lord.
39 Vos fils, qui aujourd’hui ne savent pas encore choisir entre le bien et le mal, entreront dans ce pays; je le leur donnerai et ils le posséderont.	39 Neither is his indignation against the people to be wondered at, since the Lord was angry with me also on your account, and said: Neither shalt thou go in thither.
40 Mais pour vous, demi-tour! Retournez au désert par la route de la Mer des Joncs!”	40 But Josue the son of Nun, thy minister, he shall go in for thee: exhort and encourage him, and he shall divide the land by lot to Israel.
41 Vous m’avez répondu alors: “Nous avons péché contre Yahvé, mais maintenant nous allons monter, et nous combattrons comme Yahvé notre Dieu nous l’a ordonné.” Chacun d’entre vous prit ses armes et vous pensiez que ce serait facile de gravir la montagne.	41 Your children, of whom you said that they should be led away captives, and your sons who know not this day the difference of good and evil, they shall go in: and to them I will give the land, and they shall possess it.
42 Mais Yahvé me dit: “Dis-leur de ne pas monter et de ne pas combattre; je ne suis pas au milieu de vous et vous vous feriez écraser par vos ennemis.”	42 But return you and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
43 Je vous ai transmis ses paroles, mais vous n’avez pas écouté. Vous avez résisté à l’ordre de Yahvé et vous avez voulu quand même gravir la montagne.	43 dummy verses inserted by amos
44 Alors les Amorites qui habitent ces hauteurs sont sortis à votre rencontre et ils vous ont poursuivis comme le font les abeilles; ils vous ont taillés en pièces dans Séïr et jusqu’à Horma.	44 The Lord said to me: Say to them: Go not up, and fight not, for I am not with you: lest you fall before your enemies.
45 À votre retour vous êtes venus pleurer devant Yahvé, mais Yahvé ne vous a pas écoutés. Il n’a pas prêté l’oreille.	45 I spoke, and you hearkened not: but resisting the commandment of the Lord, and swelling with pride, you went up into the mountain.
46 Alors vous vous êtes installés à Qadesh pour de longs jours et vous savez le temps qu’a duré votre séjour.	46 And the Amorrhite that dwelt in the mountains coming out, and meeting you, chased you, as bees do: and made slaughter of you from Seir as far as Horma.
	47 And when you returned and wept before the Lord, he heard you not, neither would he yield to ;your voice.
