1 La quatorzième année du roi Ézékias, Sennakérib roi d’Assyrie attaqua toutes les villes fortifiées de Juda et s’en empara.	1 Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2 De Lakish, le roi d’Assyrie envoya son grand échanson à Jérusalem auprès du roi Ézékias avec une armée importante. Il vint se présenter près du canal de la piscine supérieure, sur le chemin du Champ du Foulon.	2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.
3 Alors le maître du palais, Élyakim, fils de Hilkiyas, le secrétaire Chebna et le porte-parole Yoah, fils d’Asaf, sortirent au devant de lui.	3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.
4 Le grand échanson leur dit: “Vous redirez à Ézékias ces paroles du grand roi, le roi d’Assyrie: Sur quoi peux-tu t’appuyer?	4 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5 Tu crois peut-être que pour faire la guerre quelques déclarations remplacent la sagesse et la bravoure? Sur qui t’es-tu appuyé pour te révolter contre moi?	5 I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6 “Tu t’es appuyé sur l’Égypte. Mais ce n’est qu’un roseau brisé: celui qui s’appuie dessus, il lui entre dans la main et la transperce. Voilà ce qu’est Pharaon, le roi d’Égypte, pour tous ceux qui s’appuient sur lui!	6 Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7 Vous me direz peut-être: C’est en Yahvé notre Dieu que nous mettons notre confiance. Mais c’est bien lui qui avait des hauts-lieux et des autels qu’Ézékias a fait disparaître; il a donné cet ordre à Juda et à Jérusalem: Vous ne vous prosternerez qu’à Jérusalem et devant cet autel.	7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8 “Fais donc maintenant un pari avec mon seigneur, le roi d’Assyrie: je te donne 2 000 chevaux si tu possèdes assez de cavaliers pour les monter.	8 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9 Tu ne pourrais même pas faire reculer le moins puissant des chefs de corps de mon seigneur. Alors que tu comptais sur l’Égypte pour recevoir des chars et des cavaliers,	9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10 moi, c’est par la volonté de Yahvé que je suis monté contre ce pays pour le ravager. C’est Yahvé qui m’a dit: Monte contre ce pays et ravage-le!”	10 And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11 Élyakim, Chebna et Yoah, répondirent au grand échanson: “Je t’en prie, parle à tes serviteurs en araméen, car nous le comprenons, mais ne nous parle pas en judéen devant tous ces gens qui se trouvent sur le rempart.”	11 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12 Le grand échanson leur dit: “Est-ce à ton patron et à toi que mon patron m’a envoyé porter ces paroles? N’est-ce pas plutôt à ces hommes assis sur la muraille, qui bientôt devront tout comme vous manger leurs excréments et boire leur urine?”	12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13 Le grand échanson se leva donc et, d’une voix forte, il cria en judéen: “Écoutez la parole du grand roi, du roi d’Assyrie;	13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14 ainsi a parlé le roi: Ézékias vous trompe! Il est incapable de vous sauver de ma main.	14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15 Et qu’il ne vous dise pas de compter sur Yahvé, qu’il ne dise pas: Yahvé nous délivrera sûrement et cette ville ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d’Assyrie.	15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16 “N’écoutez pas Ézékias. Au contraire le roi d’Assyrie vous dit: Faites la paix avec moi, rendez-vous à moi, et chacun de vous continuera à manger de sa vigne ou de son figuier; chacun de vous boira de l’eau de sa citerne.	16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17 Plus tard je viendrai et je vous emmènerai dans un pays semblable au vôtre, un pays de blé et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignobles.	17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 “Ézékias vous trompe quand il vous dit: Yahvé nous délivrera! Est-ce que les dieux des nations ont été capables de sauver chacun son pays de la main du roi d’Assyrie?	18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 Où sont les dieux de Hamat et d’Arpad, où sont les dieux de Séfarvayim? Où sont les dieux du pays de Samarie? Ont-ils été capables de sauver Samarie de ma main?	19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20 Parmi tous les dieux de ces pays, lequel a délivré son pays de ma main? Et Yahvé délivrerait Jérusalem?”	20 Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21 Le peuple gardait le silence, il ne répondit pas un mot car le roi en avait donné l’ordre: “Vous ne lui répondrez pas!”	21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22 Alors le maître du palais, Élyakim, fils de Hilkiyas, le secrétaire Chebna et le porte-parole Yoah, fils d’Asaf, retournèrent auprès d’Ézékias, les vêtements déchirés. Ils lui rapportèrent les paroles du grand échanson.	22 Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
