1 Je ne suis moi-même qu’un mortel comme tous les autres, un descendant de ce premier qui fut formé de la terre. Mon corps s’est élaboré dans le ventre de ma mère	1 I myself also am a mortal man, like all others, and of the race of him, that was first made of the earth, and in the womb of my mother I was fashioned to be flesh.
2 où, durant dix mois, j’ai été pétri dans son sang, à partir de la semence virile et du plaisir partagé sur la couche.	2 In the time of ten months I was compacted in blood, of the seed of man, and the pleasure of sleep concurring.
3 Une fois né, j’ai respiré le même air que les autres, je suis tombé sur la même terre, j’ai poussé le premier cri et j’ai pleuré comme eux;	3 And being born I drew in the common air, and fell upon the earth, that is made alike, and the first voice which I uttered was crying, as all others do.
4 on m’a enveloppé de langes et on a pris soin de moi.	4 I was nursed in swaddling clothes, and with great cares.
5 Aucun roi n’a commencé sa vie autrement:	5 For none of the kings had any other beginning of birth.
6 la vie n’a qu’une entrée, et la sortie en est la même pour tous.	6 For all men have one entrance into life, and the like going out.
7 J’ai prié, et l’intelligence m’a été donnée; j’ai supplié, et l’esprit de sagesse est venu à moi.	7 Wherefore I wished, and understanding was given me: and I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came upon me:
8 Je l’ai préférée aux sceptres et aux trônes, et j’ai tenu la richesse pour rien à côté d’elle.	8 And I preferred her before kingdoms and thrones, and esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her.
9 J’ai vu qu’elle valait plus que les pierres précieuses; l’or n’est jamais qu’un peu de sable devant elle, et l’argent, moins que la boue.	9 Neither did I compare unto her any precious stone: for all gold in comparison of her, is as a little sand, and silver in respect to her shall be counted as clay.
10 Je l’ai aimée plus que la santé et la beauté, je l’ai même préférée à la lumière du soleil, car sa clarté n’a pas de coucher.	10 I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light: for her light cannot be put out.
11 Avec elle me sont venus tous les autres biens: ses mains étaient chargées de richesses sans nombre.	11 Now all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable riches through her hands,
12 Je recevais avec joie toutes ces choses que la sagesse me procurait, mais je ne savais pas encore qu’elle en était la mère.	12 And I rejoiced in all these: for this wisdom went before me, and I knew not that she was the mother of them all.
13 J’ai étudié de façon désintéressée, c’est pourquoi j’en fais le partage sans arrière-pensée: c’est une richesse que je ne cacherai pas.	13 Which I have learned without guile, and communicate without envy, and her riches I hide not.
14 Car la Sagesse est pour les humains le trésor inépuisable; ceux qui y puisent deviennent amis de Dieu, grâce aux fruits de son éducation.	14 For she is an infinite treasure to men! which they that use, become the friends of God, being commended for the gift of discipline.
15 Que Dieu me donne d’en parler correctement et de me passionner pour elle à la mesure des bienfaits reçus! Car c’est lui qui oriente vers la Sagesse et dirige les sages.	15 And God hath given to me to speak as I would, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given me: because he is the guide of wisdom, and the director of the wise:
16 Nous sommes dans les mains de Dieu, nous et nos paroles, nos réflexions et notre savoir-faire.	16 For in his hand are both we, and our words, and all wisdom, and the knowledge and skill of works.
17 C’est lui qui m’a donné la connaissance vraie du réel: la constitution du monde et les propriétés des éléments,	17 For he hath given me the true knowledge of the things that are: to know the disposition of the whole world, and the virtues of the elements,
18 les commencements, les fins et l’entre-deux, les positions du soleil et l’alternance des saisons,	18 The beginning, and ending, and midst of the times, the alterations of their courses, and the changes of seasons,
19 les cycles de l’année et le mouvement des étoiles,	19 The revolutions of the year, and the dispositions of the stars,
20 les différentes espèces et le comportement des bêtes sauvages, le pouvoir des esprits et les problèmes des humains, la variété des plantes et les propriétés de leurs racines.	20 The natures of living creatures, and rage of wild beasts, the force of winds, and reasonings of men, the diversities of plants, and the virtues of roots,
21 J’ai donc su tout ce qui est caché et tout ce qui se voit, puisque la Sagesse qui a tout mis en œuvre me l’enseignait.	21 And all such things as are hid and not foreseen, I have learned: for wisdom, which is the worker of all things, taught me.
22 En elle se trouve un esprit intelligent, saint, unique, multiple, agile, mobile, pénétrant, pur, limpide; il ne peut se corrompre, il est porté au bien et efficace.	22 For in her is the spirit of understanding: holy, one, manifold, subtile, eloquent, active, undefiled, sure, sweet, loving that which is good, quick, which nothing hindereth, beneficent,
23 C’est un esprit irrésistible, bienfaisant, ami des hommes, ferme, sûr, paisible, qui peut tout et qui veille sur tout; il imprègne tous les autres esprits, aussi intelligents, purs et subtils qu’ils soient.	23 Gentle, kind, steadfast, assured, secure, having all power, overseeing all things, and containing all spirits, intelligible, pure, subtile.
24 La Sagesse est plus mobile que tout, grâce à sa pureté elle traverse et pénètre tout.	24 For wisdom is more active than all active things: and reacheth everywhere by reason of her purity.
25 Elle se dégage, comme une vapeur, de la puissance de Dieu, c’est une émanation très pure de sa gloire; aussi bien, rien de souillé ne s’introduit en elle.	25 For she is a vapour of the power of God, and a certain pure emanation of the glory of the almighty God: and therefore no defiled thing cometh into her.
26 Elle est le reflet de la lumière éternelle, le miroir sans tache de l’activité de Dieu et l’image de sa perfection.	26 For she is the brightness of eternal light, and the unspotted mirror of God's majesty, and the image of his goodness.
27 Elle est une, mais elle peut toutes choses; sans sortir d’elle-même, elle renouvelle tout. D’âge en âge, elle passe dans les âmes saintes dont elle fait des amis de Dieu et des prophètes.	27 And being but one, she can do all things: and remaining in herself the same, she reneweth all things, and through nations conveyeth herself into holy souls, she maketh the friends of God and prophets.
28 Car Dieu n’aime rien sinon celui qui cohabite avec la Sagesse.	28 For God loveth none but him that dwelleth with wisdom.
29 Elle est plus belle que le soleil et surpasse toute constellation; comparée à la lumière, elle arrive première,	29 For she is more beautiful than the sun, and above all the order of the stars: being compared with the light, she is found before it.
30 car la nuit vient remplacer le jour, tandis que jamais le mal n’est plus fort que la Sagesse.	30 For after this cometh night, but no evil can overcome wisdom.
