1 I quali poi che furono passati, disse Iddio a Iosuè:	1 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, Yahweh spoke to Joshua and said,
2 Eleggi XII uomini, tutti di ciascuna schiatta.	2 'Choose twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, and give them this order,
3 E comanda loro, che tolgano del mezzo del fiume Giordano, ove istettono li piedi de' preti, XII pietre durissime; le quali pietre porrete nel luogo del campo, dove vi porrete istanotte e ficcherete le vostre trabacche.	3 "Here, from mid-Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet were standing, take twelve stones; carrythem with you and set them down in the camp where you pass the night." '
4 E chiamò Iosuè XII uomini, i quali avea (iscelti ed) eletti de' figliuoli d' Israel, tutti quanti di ciascuna ischiatta.	4 Joshua cal ed the twelve men whom he had selected from the Israelites, one man from each tribe,
5 E disse loro: andate dinanzi all' arca di Dio. vostro Signore nel mezzo del (fiume) Giordano, e portate quindi ciascheduno tutte quante queste pietre nelle spalle vostre, secondo il numero de' figliuoli d' Israel (tutti quanti di ciascuna ischiatta).	5 and Joshua said to them, 'Go on ahead of the ark of Yahweh your God into mid-Jordan, and each ofyou take one stone on his shoulder, corresponding to the number of the tribes of Israel,
6 E sarà segno intra voi. E quando i vostri figliuoli dimane vi domanderanno, dicendo: che vogliono dire queste pietre?	6 to make this a sign among you; and when, in the future, your children ask you, "What do these stonesmean for you?"
7 e voi sì risponderete loro, (e sì direte loro): l'acque del (fiume) Giordano sì vennero meno dinanzi all' arca del patto (e del legamento) di Dio Signore, quando ella il passava; e imperciò sono poste qui queste pietre per maestramento de' figliuoli d' Israel insino in eterno.	7 you will then tell them, "The waters of the Jordan separated before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh;when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the river separated. These stones are an everlasting reminder of thisto the Israelites."
8 E feceno i figliuoli d' Israel siccome comandò loro Iosuè, e portarono del letto del (fiume) Giordano XII pietre, come Iddio avea comandato a Iosuè, secondo il numero de' figliuoli d' Israel, insino al luogo ove puosono il campo; e quivi sì le puosono.	8 The Israelites did as Joshua ordered; they took twelve stones from mid-Jordan corresponding to thenumber of the tribes of Israel, as Yahweh had told Joshua; they carried them over to the camp and set themdown there.
9 E le altre XII pietre sì puose Iosuè nel mezzo del letto del (fiume) Giordano, nel luogo dove stettero i preti i quali portavano l'arca del patto (del legamento di Dio Signore); e ancora vi sono al dì d'oggi.	9 Joshua then erected twelve stones in mid-Jordan, on the spot where the feet of the priests carrying theark of the covenant had stood; and they are stil there today.
10 Ma i preti, i quali portavano l' arca, istavano nel mezzo del (fiume) Giordano, d'insino a tanto che fossono compiute tutte quelle cose che Iddio avea comandate a Iosuè, che dicesse (e parlasse) al popolo, e che gli avea detto a lui Moisè. E andò ratto il popolo, e sì passò.	10 The priests carrying the ark stood stil in mid-Jordan, until everything had been done that Yahweh hadordered Joshua to tel the people (in accordance with everything that Moses had ordered Joshua); and thepeople hurried across.
11 E passati tutti quanti, sì passò poi l'arca di Dio; e i preti sì andavano dinanzi al popolo.	11 When the people had finished crossing, the ark of Yahweh then crossed, with the priests, to the headof the people.
12 Ma i figliuoli di Ruben, e quelli di Gad e della metà de' figliuoli di Manasse, armati andavano dinanzi ai figliuoli d' Israel, come avea loro comandato Moisè (servo di Dio).	12 The sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed in battle formation at thehead of the Israelites, as Moses had told them.
13 E quaranta migliaia di combattitori, a torme e a schiere, andavano per lo piano e per li campi della città di Gerico.	13 Some forty thousand warriors in arms, they crossed in Yahweh's presence, ready for battle, towardsthe plain of Jericho.
14 In quello dì magnificò (ed esaltò) Iddio Iosuè nel mezzo de' figliuoli d' Israel, acciò che temessono lui, sì come temettono Moisè quando egli era vivo.	14 That day, Yahweh made Joshua great in the eyes of all Israel, who respected him as they hadrespected Moses, as long as he lived.
15 E sì gli disse:	15 Yahweh said to Joshua,
16 Comanda ai preti che portano l'arca del patto (e del legamento), che escano del (fiume) Giordano.	16 'Order the priests carrying the ark of the Testimony to come up out of the Jordan.'
17 Il quale comandò loro, e disse che uscissono del (fiume) Giordano.	17 And Joshua gave the order to the priests, 'Come up, out of the Jordan!'
18 E uscendone fuori, portando l'arca del patto (del legamento) di Dio, salirono in su la terra secca (e soda); e tornarono l'acque (del fiume Giordano) nel letto loro, e correvano come erano usate di correre innanzi.	18 Now, when the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came up out of mid-Jordan, nosooner had the soles of the priests' feet touched solid ground, than the waters of the Jordan returned to their bedand ran on, in spate as before.
19 Ma il popolo uscì del Giordano il decimo dì del primo mese; (e andarono) e puosono il campo in Galgala, dirimpetto alla plaga dell' oriente (dove si leva il sole) della cittade di Gerico.	19 It was the tenth day of the first month when the people came up from the Jordan and made their campat Gilgal, on the eastern border of Jericho.
20 E le dodici pietre, che aveano tolte del letto del (fiume) Giordano, sì le puose Iosuè in Galgala.	20 As regards those twelve stones, which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set them up at Gilgal.
21 E disse Iosuè ai figliuoli d' Israel: quando addimanderanno i figliuoli vostri domani (posdì) i loro padri, e diranno loro: che vogliono dire queste pietre?	21 He then said to the Israelites, 'When, in the future, your children ask their fathers, "What are thesestones?"
22 insegneretelo loro, e sì direte: per l'arena del letto passò Israel questo (fiume) Giordano,	22 you wil explain to your children, "Israel crossed this Jordan dry-shod.
23 seccando Iddio nostro Signore l'acque del fiume dinanzi di noi, d'insino a tanto che fossimo passati noi,	23 For Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan in front of you until you had crossed, just asYahweh your God did to the Sea of Reeds, which he dried up before us until we had crossed it;
24 come in prima aveva fatto nel mare rosso, il quale ancora seccó infino a tanto che fussimo passati;	24 so that al the peoples of the earth may know how mighty the hand of Yahweh is, and always stand inawe of Yahweh your God." '
25 acciò che apparino li populi di tutte le terre la fortissima mano di Dio Signore, e acciò che voi temiate Iddio vostro Signore d'ogni tempo.
