1 E poi ch' ebbero passate le contrade d' Amflpoli e di Apollonia, vennero in Tessalonica, dove era la sinagoga (e congregazione) de' giudei.	1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
2 Onde Paulo, secondo ch' era sua usanza, entrò a loro per tre sabbati continui, e predicò (loro mostrando e) provando per le (loro) Scritture,	2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
3 che Cristo era Dio, e come fu bisogno che elli ricevesse passione, e poi resuscitasse il terzo dì.	3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
4 Onde molti di loro credettero, e diventorono suoi discepoli; e poi così altri pagani molti e donne nobili (ricevettero il battesimo).	4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
5 Allora li iudei (irati e) accesi di pazzo zelo (della legge) concitorono e indussero certi mali uomini del popolo, e fecero grande sedizione in tutta la città; e a furore andorono a casa di (uno cristiano, che avea nome) Iasone (nella cui casa Paulo e Sila abitavano), e gridavano che li producesse e mandasse fuori.	5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
6 E trovandoli, presonli e menaronli insieme con Iasone e altri (molti) cristiani a' principi (e a' rettori) della città, (accusandoli e) gridando (e dicendo): questi conturbano la nostra città,	6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
7 e prèdicano (nuova dottrina) contra alli statuti di Cesare, dicendo che uno loro Iesù è re; e questo reo uomo li ricetta (e tienli in casa sua).	7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.
8 E per (questo modo e per) queste parole provocavano la gente e li principi (contra a loro).	8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
9 Ma il predetto Iasone con dolci e soavi parole li placò e scusossi, sì che li lasciorono partire quindi.	9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
10 E (partendosi) di notte (occultamente) li cristiani li feciono partire, e pervennero in Berea; dove entrando (li sabbati) nelle sinagoghe de' iudei,	10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 dove erano raunati li più nobili (e maggiori) di Tessalonica, furono ricevuti e uditi con grande desiderio, cercando le Scritture, per vedere (e trovare) se era vero come gli apostoli dicevano.	11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
12 E allora si convertirono molti maschi e femine, e iudei e pagani.	12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
13 E conoscendo (e udendo) li giudei di Tessalonica, che Paulo aveva predicato a Berea la parola di Dio, vennero e mostrorono grande turbazione, e concitorono grande sedizione (contra gli apostoli).	13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.
14 Onde li cristiani (per lo meglio) il feciono partire e andare insino al mare; ma pur Sila e Timoteo rimansero quivi.	14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
15 E quelli ch' ebbero a guidare Paulo, il menorono insino ad Atene; e poi, tornando elli, Paulo mandò (dicendo e comandando) per loro a Sila e Timoteo, che tosto andassero a lui; e così fecero.	15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
16 E stando Paulo in Atene, e aspettando Sila e Timoteo, accendevasi (e quasi tutto si rodeva) di santo zelo, vedendo che sì nobile città (piena di tanti savii uomini) serviva agl' idoli.	16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
17 E (spesse volte) disputava co' iudei (che v'erano) entrando nelle sinagoghe (li sabbati); e similmente andava gli altri dì alle piazze e a' mercati, e disputava co' filosofi pagani, cioè con li epicurei e con gli stoici (e altre sette).	17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.
18 Onde molti di loro (non intendevano l' altezza della sua dottrina, e facevansi beffe, e) dicevano: or che vuole dire questo seminatore di parole? [E altri] questo ci pare denunziatore di nuovi demonii, che predica Iesù (crucifisso e Dio), e annunzia la resurrezione.	18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
19 E prendendolo, sì il menorono a quella contrada che si chiama Areopago (per che ivi s' adorava il dio Marte), e dissongli: potremo noi sapere la verità di questa tua dottrina?	19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?
20 Chè per verità pare che ci vogli mettere nuove cose nelle orecchie; e però per certo vogliamo sapere quello che vuoli dire.	20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
21 Onde quelli di Atene non vacavano (e non intendevano) ad altro se non a dire o udire novità.	21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
22 Allora Paulo si levò in mezzo di loro, e disse: (signori e) uomini Ateniesi, considerando io li vostri fatti (li vostri studii), veggio che al tutto siete superstiziosi (e vani).	22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 E avete tra voi (diverse sette e opinioni, e diversi templi e) diversi dii; li quali andando io veggendo, trovai uno altare, che v'era soprascritto in titolo: QUESTO È L'ALTARE DEL DIO NON CONOSCIUTO. Onde sappiate che questo Iddio, non conosciuto, quello che io vi prèdico.	23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24 Dio il quale fece il mondo e ciò ch' è in esso, essendo il Signore del cielo e della terra, non abita in templi fabbricati per umano magisterio.	24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25 E non richiede culto manuale, e di niuno (vostro mestiere corporale) ha bisogno; anzi elli dà vita e spirazione e ogni cosa.	25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26 E produsse d' uno uomo tutta la umana (natura e) generazione, e divise e sparse gli uomini per diversi luoghi e diverse abitazioni,	26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27 (e induce tutti) a cercare Iddio (e conoscere per queste opere), se forse il possiamo trovare, avvegna ch' elli non sia da lungi da ciascuno di noi.	27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 Per ciò che in lui (e per lui) viviamo e siamo, come eziandio mostrano certi vostri (antichi) poeti, dicendo che noi siamo sua generazione (e schiatta, e a sua similitudine).	28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Essendo adunque di sua generazione, non dobbiamo essere si stolti, che crediamo (o diciamo) ch' elli sia simile a nulla scultura d' oro o d' argento, o ad altra cosa scolpita, fatta per mano di uomo (o per ingegno d' uomo).	29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
30 Onde dispregiando (e reprobando) elli li tempi di questa ignoranza (e cecità dell' idolatria), annunzia per noi, e induce ogni uomo a penitenza.	30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Perciò che ha instituito lo dì nel quale debbe giudicare il mondo, facendo a ciò venire giudice di tutti il suo figliuolo Iesù, il quale da morte resuscitd.	31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32 Ma imperciò che (quelli filosofi) non credeano la resurrezione de' morti, alcuni facevano beffe di lui (udendoli ricordare la resurrezione); alcuni dicevano: udiremoti di ciò un' altra volta.	32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
33 E dopo queste cose Paulo uscì di mezzo di loro (e partissi).	33 So Paul departed from among them.
34 Ma alcuni altri gli andorono dietro (compunti e alluminati dal suo sermone) e diventorono cristiani; fra li quali principalmente fu (uno grande maestro e filosofo, il quale fu chiamato) Dionisio Areopagita con la sua donna, che aveva nome Damari, e altri (molti).	34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
