| 1 E i figliuoli de' profeti dissero a Eliseo: ecco il luogo, nel quale noi abitiamo nel tuo cospetto, è stretto a noi. | 1 Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, "See, the place where we dwell under your charge is too small for us. |
| 2 Andiamo insino al Giordano, e cogliamo nella selva ciascuno legna, ed edifichiamo luogo ad abitare. Il quale disse: andate. | 2 Let us go to the Jordan and each of us get there a log, and let us make a place for us to dwell there." And he answered, "Go." |
| 3 E uno di loro disse: vieni tu con esso i servi tuoi. Ed egli respuose: io verrò. | 3 Then one of them said, "Be pleased to go with your servants." And he answered, "I will go." |
| 4 E andò con esso loro. Venuti al Giordano, tagliavano i legni. | 4 So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. |
| 5 E intervenne che tagliando uno, il ferro della scure sì cadde nell' acqua; e gridò quegli e disse: oimè, oimè, oimè, signore mio! ch' io l' avea accattato in presto. | 5 But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water; and he cried out, "Alas, my master! It was borrowed." |
| 6 E l'uomo di Dio disse: dove cadde? E quegli mostrò il luogo. E tagliò uno legno, e miselo ivi; e natò il ferro (ed entrò nel mezzo del legno). | 6 Then the man of God said, "Where did it fall?" When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick, and threw it in there, and made the iron float. |
| 7 E disse: togli. Il quale distese la mano, e tolselo. | 7 And he said, "Take it up." So he reached out his hand and took it. |
| 8 E il re di Siria guerreggiava contro (al re ') Israel, e tenne consiglio coi servi suoi, dicendo: in cotale (e in cotale) luogo mettiamo agguati. | 8 Once when the king of Syria was warring against Israel, he took counsel with his servants, saying, "At such and such a place shall be my camp." |
| 9 E l'uomo di Dio mandò a dire al re d' Israel: guarda che tu non vada in cotale luogo, però che i Sirii sono ivi in agguato. | 9 But the man of God sent word to the king of Israel, "Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are going down there." |
| 10 Onde che il re d' Israel mandò al luogo del quale avea detto l' uomo di Dio, e preselo prima, e guardossi ivi non una volta nè due. | 10 And the king of Israel sent to the place of which the man of God told him. Thus he used to warn him, so that he saved himself there more than once or twice. |
| 11 E il cuore del re di Siria si conturbò per questa cosa; e chiamati i servi suoi, disse: perchè non mi dite voi, chi m' ha tradito col re d' Israel? | 11 And the mind of the king of Syria was greatly troubled because of this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, "Will you not show me who of us is for the king of Israel?" |
| 12 E uno de' suoi servi disse: signore mio re, non è così; ma Eliseo profeta, il quale è in Israel, rivela al re d' Israel tutte le parole che tu di' nel tuo core secreto. | 12 And one of his servants said, "None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedchamber." |
| 13 E disse loro: andate, e vedete dov' egli sia, acciò ch' io mandi, e faccialo prendere. E dissero a lui: egli è in Dotan. | 13 And he said, "Go and see where he is, that I may send and seize him." It was told him, "Behold, he is in Dothan." |
| 14 Onde ch' egli mandò li cavalieri e carra e la fortezza del suo esercito; i quali venuti la notte, circondarono la città. | 14 So he sent there horses and chariots and a great army; and they came by night, and surrounded the city. |
| 15 E levando per tempo, il ministro dell' uomo di Dio uscì fuori, e vidde lo esercito d'intorno alla città, cavalli e carra; e nunciorono a lui, dicendo: ohimè, ohimè, signore mio, che faremo? | 15 When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was round about the city. And the servant said, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" |
| 16 E quegli respuose: non temere, però che più ne sono con noi, che con loro. | 16 He said, "Fear not, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." |
| 17 E, orato, Eliseo disse: Signore mio, apri gli occhi di costui, acciò ch' egli veggia. E aperse il Signore gli occhi di quello ministro, e vidde: ecco tutto il monte pieno di carra, e di cavalli di fuoco intorno ad Eliseo. | 17 Then Elisha prayed, and said, "O LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see." So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. |
| 18 E i nemici discenderono ad Eliseo; ed egli orò al Signore, dicendo: io ti priego, Signore, che tu percuota questa gente di cecità. E percossegli il Signore, che non vedessono, secondo la parola di Eliseo. | 18 And when the Syrians came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, and said, "Strike this people, I pray thee, with blindness." So he struck them with blindness in accordance with the prayer of Elisha. |
| 19 E disse loro [Eliseo]: non è questa la via, e non è questa la città; venite dopo me; io vi mostrerò l' uomo il quale voi andate cercando. E menogli in Samaria. | 19 And Elisha said to them, "This is not the way, and this is not the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek." And he led them to Samaria. |
| 20 Ed [entrati in Samaria], disse Eliseo: Signore, apri gli occhi di costoro, acciò che veggiano. E aperse loro [il Signore] gli occhi, e viddero ch' erano in mezzo di Samaria. | 20 As soon as they entered Samaria, Elisha said, "O LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see." So the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and lo, they were in the midst of Samaria. |
| 21 E il re d' Israel disse ad Eliseo, vedendo quella gente: padre, ucciderò io costoro? | 21 When the king of Israel saw them he said to Elisha, "My father, shall I slay them? Shall I slay them?" |
| 22 E quegli respuose: non; però che tu non gli hai presi col tuo arco, e non col tuo coltello, che gli debbi uccidere; poni dinanzi a loro del pane e dell' acqua, che mangino e beano, e ritornino al loro signore. | 22 He answered, "You shall not slay them. Would you slay those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master." |
| 23 E fu posto loro innanzi grandi apparecchiamenti di cibi, e mangiarono e bevèno, e lasciogli andare, e vennero al loro signore; e da indi innanzi non vennero più i ladroncelli di Siria in Israel. | 23 So he prepared for them a great feast; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the Syrians came no more on raids into the land of Israel. |
| 24 E dopo questo Benadad re di Siria congregò tutto il suo esercito; e ascendè, e assediò Samaria. | 24 Afterward Ben-hadad king of Syria mustered his entire army, and went up, and besieged Samaria. |
| 25 E fu fatta grande fame in Samaria; e tanto tempo fu assediata, che il capo dell' asino valse ottanta denari d' ariento; e la quarta parte d'una misura, chiamata CABO, di sterco di colombi si vendea cinque denari d' ariento. | 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria, as they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove's dung for five shekels of silver. |
| 26 E passando il re [d' Israel] per lo muro, una femina gridò a lui, e disse: signore mio re, salvami. | 26 Now as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, "Help, my lord, O king!" |
| 27 Ed egli respuose: non ti salverà il Signore; per che modo ti posso io salvare? dell' aja o del torculare? E disse il re: che vuogli? Ed ella disse: | 27 And he said, "If the LORD will not help you, whence shall I help you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?" |
| 28 Questa femina mi disse: dammi il tuo figliuolo, acciò che 'l mangiamo oggi; e il mio figliuolo mangeremo dimane. | 28 And the king asked her, "What is your trouble?" She answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.' |
| 29 Cocessimo il mio figliuolo, e mangiassimo. E io gli dissi l'altro dì: dà il tuo figliuolo, acciò che lo mangiamo. Ed ella nascose il suo figliuolo. | 29 So we boiled my son, and ate him. And on the next day I said to her, 'Give your son, that we may eat him'; but she has hidden her son." |
| 30 La qual cosa udito il re, squarciò le vestimenta, e passava sopra il muro; e tutto il popolo vidde il cilicio, del quale era vestito il re di sotto alla carne. | 30 When the king heard the words of the woman he rent his clothes--now he was passing by upon the wall--and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth beneath upon his body-- |
| 31 E disse il re: questo mi faccia Iddio, e questo aggiunga, se il capo di Eliseo figliuolo di Safat istarà [oggi] sopra lui. | 31 and he said, "May God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today." |
| 32 Eliseo sedea in casa sua, e uomini antichi sedeano con esso lui. E mandò il re uno uomo innanzi; e prima che venisse il nuncio, disse a quelli vecchi: non sapete voi, che il figliuolo dell' omicidiale ha mandato quiritta per farmi tagliare il capo? vedete, quando verrà il messaggio, chiudete l'uscio e non lasciate entrare; ecco dopo lui anche il strepito degli piedi del suo signore. | 32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Now the king had dispatched a man from his presence; but before the messenger arrived Elisha said to the elders, "Do you see how this murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door fast against him. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?" |
| 33 E parlando a loro Eliseo, apparve il messaggio il quale venia a lui. E disse: ecco che dal Signore è cotanto male; che aspetto io più da lui? | 33 And while he was still speaking with them, the king came down to him and said, "This trouble is from the LORD! Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?" |
