1 - Passando, Gesù vide un uomo, cieco fin dalla nascita.	1 And Jesus, while passing by, saw a man blind from birth.
2 I discepoli gli domandarono: «Rabbi, perchè costui nascesse cieco, chi ha peccato, egli o i suoi genitori?».	2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?”
3 Gesù rispose: «Nè egli nè i suoi genitori hanno peccato; bensì affinchè si manifestassero in lui le opere di Dio.	3 Jesus responded: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God would be made manifest in him.
4 Bisogna che io compia le opere di Colui che mi ha mandato, finchè è giorno; poi viene la notte, quando nessuno può operare.	4 I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no one is able to work.
5 Mentre sono nel mondo, sono la luce del mondo».	5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 Detto questo, sputò in terra, fece con lo sputo del fango, spalmò il fango sugli occhi di quello,	6 When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and he made clay from the spittle, and he smeared the clay over his eyes.
7 e gli disse: «Va' a lavarti alla piscina di Siloe» (che vuol dire: "Inviato"). Egli andò, si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva.	7 And he said to him: “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated as: one who has been sent). Therefore, he went away and washed, and he returned, seeing.
8 I vicini dunque e quelli che l'avevano veduto prima, giacchè faceva il mendicante, dicevano: «Non è costui l'uomo che stava seduto a mendicare?». Gli uni rispondevano: «È lui»,	8 And so the bystanders and those who had seen him before, when he was a beggar, said, “Is this not the one who was sitting and begging?” Some said, “This is he.”
9 altri invece: «No, ma è uno che gli rassomiglia». Ed egli diceva: «Io son quello».	9 But others said, “Certainly not, but he is similar to him.” Yet truly, he himself said, “I am he.”
10 Allora gli domandarono: «Come mai ti sono stati aperti gli occhi?».	10 Therefore, they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
11 Rispose: «Quell'uomo che si chiama Gesù, fece del fango, lo stese sui miei occhi e mi ha detto: - Va' a lavarti alla piscina di Siloe. - Vi andai, dunque, mi lavai e adesso ci vedo».	11 He responded: “That man who is called Jesus made clay, and he anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ And I went, and I washed, and I see.”
12 Ed essi gli chiesero: «Dov'è colui?». Ed egli rispose: «Non so».	12 And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”
13 Condussero allora dai Farisei colui che era stato cieco.	13 They brought the one who had been blind to the Pharisees.
14 Era infatti un giorno di sabato quello in cui Gesù fece del fango e gli aprì gli occhi.	14 Now it was the Sabbath, when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
15 I Farisei dunque domandarono di nuovo come ci vedesse. Ed egli rispose loro: «Mi ha posto del fango sugli occhi, mi son lavato e ci vedo».	15 Therefore, again the Pharisees questioned him as to how he had seen. And he said to them, “He placed clay over my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Dissero perciò alcuni Farisei: «Non può venir da Dio quest'uomo che non osserva il sabato». Altri osservarono: «Come mai può un peccatore compiere simili prodigi?». E v'era divisione tra loro.	16 And so certain Pharisees said: “This man, who does not keep the Sabbath, is not from God.” But others said, “How could a sinful man accomplish these signs?” And there was a schism among them.
17 Interrogarono un'altra volta il cieco: «Tu che dici di quest'uomo che ti ha aperto gli occhi?». E quello rispose: «Che è un profeta».	17 Therefore, they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him who opened your eyes?” Then he said, “He is a Prophet.”
18 I Giudei però non credettero che egli fosse stato cieco e avesse acquistato la vista, finchè non ebbero chiamati i genitori di questo tale che adesso ci vedeva;	18 Therefore, the Jews did not believe, about him, that he had been blind and had seen, until they called the parents of him who had seen.
19 ai quali domandarono: «È questo il vostro figlio che voi dite nato cieco? In qual modo ora ci vede?».	19 And they questioned them, saying: “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how is it that he now sees?”
20 I genitori risposero: «Sappiamo che questo è nostro figlio, e che è nato cieco;	20 His parents responded to them and said: “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
21 come ora ci veda non sappiamo, e non sappiamo neppure chi gli abbia aperti gli occhi. Interrogate lui; ha l'età, ed egli parli di se stesso».	21 But how it is that he now sees, we do not know. And who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough. Let him speak for himself.”
22 Così dissero i suoi genitori, perchè avevano paura dei Giudei. I Giudei infatti si erano accordati che chiunque avesse riconosciuto [Gesù] per il Cristo fosse scacciato dalla sinagoga.	22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already conspired, so that if anyone were to confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.
23 Per questo i genitori del cieco risposero: «Ha l'età, interrogate lui».	23 It was for this reason that his parents said: “He is old enough. Ask him.”
24 Chiamarono quindi novamente l'uomo, già cieco, e gli dissero: «Dà gloria a Dio; noi sappiamo che costui è un peccatore».	24 Therefore, they again called the man who had been blind, and they said to him: “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”
25 Egli rispose: «Io non so se egli sia un peccatore; una cosa sola so, che prima io ero cieco e ora ci vedo».	25 And so he said to them: “If he is a sinner, I do not know it. One thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see.”
26 Gli domandarono ancora: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?».	26 Then they said to him: “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 Rispose loro: «Ve l'ho già detto e non mi avete ascoltato; che cosa volete sapere di più? Forse volete anche voi diventargli discepoli?».	27 He answered them: “I have already told you, and you heard it. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”
28 Ma essi lo ingiuriarono, dicendo: «Sii tu discepolo di costui; quanto a noi siamo discepoli di Mosè.	28 Therefore, they cursed him and said: “You be his disciple. But we are disciples of Moses.
29 Noi sappiamo che Dio ha parlato a Mosè, mentre costui non sappiamo donde sia».	29 We know that God spoke to Moses. But this man, we do not know where he is from.”
30 Allora l'uomo riprese e disse loro: «E questo appunto è mirabile, che voi non sapete donde sia, eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi.	30 The man responded and said to them: “Now in this is a wonder: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes.
31 Sappiamo bene che Dio non esaudisce i malvagi; ma se uno ha il timore di Dio e ne eseguisce la volontà, Egli lo ascolta.	31 And we know that God does not hear sinners. But if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, then he heeds him.
32 Da che mondo è mondo non si è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a un cieco nato.	32 From ancient times, it has not been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of someone born blind.
33 Certamente se costui non fosse da Dio, non avrebbe potuto farlo».	33 Unless this man were of God, he would not be able to do any such thing.”
34 Gli risposero: «Sei nato pieno di peccati e pretendi insegnare a noi?». E lo scacciarono fuori.	34 They responded and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you would teach us?” And they cast him out.
35 Gesù seppe che l'avevano scacciato fuori, e incontratolo, gli disse: «Credi tu nel Figliuol di Dio?».	35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”
36 Egli rispose: «Chi è, Signore, perchè io creda a lui?».	36 He responded and said, “Who is he, Lord, so that I may believe in him?”
37 Gesù soggiunse: «Tu l'ha visto, e chi parla con te è quello».	37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.”
38 Egli allora replicò: «Signore, io credo». E si prostrò innanzi a lui e lo adorò.	38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And falling prostrate, he worshipped him.
39 Gesù disse: «Io sono venuto nel mondo per compiere un giudizio, affinchè quei che non vedono veggano, e quelli che vedono diventino ciechi».	39 And Jesus said, “I came into this world in judgment, so that those who do not see, may see; and so that those who see, may become blind.”
40 Alcuni Farisei, ch'erano con lui, avendo udito quelle parole, gli dissero: «Siamo forse ciechi anche noi?».	40 And certain Pharisees, who were with him, heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?”
41 Rispose loro Gesù: «Se foste ciechi non avreste alcun peccato; ma voi affermate di vedere e perciò il vostro peccato perdura.	41 Jesus said to them: “If you were blind, you would not have sin. Yet now you say, ‘We see.’ So your sin persists.”
