| 1 - Prese allora a parlare il Signore a Giobbe dalla procella e disse: | 1 The LORD then said to Job: |
| 2 «Recingi pur da uomo [forte] i tuoi fianchi, io t'interrogherò e tu ammaestrami. | 2 Will we have arguing with the Almighty by the critic? Let him who would correct God give answer! |
| 3 Renderai tu forse vano il mio diritto, e darai torto a me per aver te ragione? | 3 Then Job answered the LORD and said: |
| 4 E se hai un braccio come quello di Dio, e il tuono della tua voce è simile al suo, | 4 Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth. |
| 5 circondati d'eccellenza e lèvati in alto, sii glorioso e ammantati di magnifiche vesti: | 5 Though I have spoken once, I will not do so again; though twice, I will do so no more. |
| 6 disperdi nel tuo furore i superbi, e ogni altiero che tu veda umilialo: | 6 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said: |
| 7 volgi lo sguardo su tutti i superbi e confondili, e infrangi gli empii là ove si trovano; | 7 Gird up your loins now, like a man. I will question you, and you tell me the answers! |
| 8 nascondili insieme nella polvere, e nella fossa immergi i loro volti; | 8 Would you refuse to acknowledge my right? Would you condemn me that you may be justified? |
| 9 allora anch'io riconosceròche la tua destra ti può salvare! | 9 Have you an arm like that of God, or can you thunder with a voice like his? |
| 10 Ecco Behemoth, che io ho fatto insieme con te: erba come un bove esso mangia; | 10 Adorn yourself with grandeur and majesty, and array yourself with glory and splendor. |
| 11 la sua forza sta nei suoi fianchi, la sua vigoria nell'ombelico del suo ventre. | 11 Let loose the fury of your wrath; |
| 12 Indura esso la sua coda come un cedro, i tendini delle sue cosce sono avviluppati; | 12 tear down the wicked and shatter them. Bring down the haughty with a glance; |
| 13 le sue ossa sono come canne di bronzo, la sua cartilagine come lamine di ferro. | 13 bury them in the dust together; in the hidden world imprison them. |
| 14 Esso è il primo dei prodotti di Dio; chi lo ha fatto, lo domina con la sua spada. | 14 Then will I too acknowledge that your own right hand can save you. |
| 15 Ad esso i monti forniscono le erbe, là ove scherzano tutte le bestie del campo. | 15 See, besides you I made Behemoth, that feeds on grass like an ox. |
| 16 Sotto l'ombra esso dorme, nell'interno dei canneti e nei luoghi paludosi; | 16 Behold the strength in his loins, and his vigor in the sinews of his belly. |
| 17 lo ricoprono i loti con la loro ombra, e lo circondano i salici da torrente. | 17 He carries his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are like cables. |
| 18 Ecco, esso tracanna un fiume senza scomporsi, e rimane tranquillo anche se il Giordano irrompa contro il suo muso. | 18 His bones are like tubes of bronze; his frame is like iron rods. |
| 19 Chi mai potrà abbrancarlo tra le occhiaie con un amo, e con lesine forerà le sue narici? | 19 He came at the beginning of God's ways, and was made the taskmaster of his fellows; |
| 20 Forse potrai estrarre con l'amo Leviathan, e con una fune legherai tu la sua lingua? | 20 For the produce of the mountains is brought to him, and of all wild animals he makes sport. |
| 21 Metterai tu forse un anello alle sue narici, e con un gancio gli bucherai la mascella? | 21 Under the lotus trees he lies, in coverts of the reedy swamp. |
| 22 Si metterà esso forse con insistenza a pregarti, ovvero ti rivolgerà parole tenere? | 22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade; all about him are the poplars on the bank. |
| 23 Stringerà forse con te un patto, perchè tu lo prenda qual servo per sempre? | 23 If the river grows violent, he is not disturbed; he is tranquil though the torrent surges about his mouth. |
| 24 Giocheresti forse con lui come con un uccello, o gli metteresti un laccio per [trastullar] le tue ancelle? | 24 Who can capture him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a trap? |
| 25 Lo squarteranno forse i soci [della pesca], lo taglieranno i venditori [di pesce]? | 25 Can you lead about Leviathan with a hook, or curb his tongue with a bit? |
| 26 Potresti tu riempir le reti con la sua pelle, e il cesto dei pesci con la sua testa? | 26 Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce through his cheek with a gaff? |
| 27 Mettigli la tua mano addosso: preparati alla guerra, e non parlar più! | 27 Will he then plead with you, time after time, or address you with tender words? |
| 28 Infatti, la speranza di chi [gli dà la caccia] rimane delusa, perchè sotto gli occhi di tutti costui sarà atterrato. | 28 Will he make an agreement with you that you may have him as a slave forever? |
| 29 Can you play with him, as with a bird? Can you put him in leash for your maidens? |
| 30 Will the traders bargain for him? Will the merchants divide him up? |
| 31 Can you fill his hide with barbs, or his head with fish spears? |
| 32 Once you but lay a hand upon him, no need to recall any other conflict! |
