Sirach 40

1 A great occupation was created for all men, and a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day of their departure from their mother’s womb, even until the day of their burial into the mother of all:	1 Una molestia grande è destinata a tutti gli uomini, e un giogo pesante posa sopra i figliuoli di Adamo dal giorno, in cui escon dall'utero della madre fino al di della lor sepoltura nel seno della madre comune.
2 their thoughts, and the fears of their heart, their imagined expectations, and the day of their end,	2 Le loro sollecitudini, i timori del cuore, le apprensioni di quel, che aspettano, e il di che tutto finisce:
3 from him who sits upon a glorious throne, even to him who is humbled in earth and ashes,	3 Da colui, che è assiso sopra un seggio di gloria, fino a quello, che giace per terra, e sulla cenere:
4 from him who wears hyacinth and bears a crown, even to him who is covered with rough linen: wrath, envy, tumult, restlessness, and the fear of death, continual anger and contention.	4 Da colui, che veste l'iacinto, e porta corona, fino a quello, che è coperto di rozza tela di lino: il furore, la gelo sia, l'inquietezza, l'agitazione, il timor della morte, l'ira ostinata, e le risse,
5 And in the time of rest upon his bed, the sleep of the night changes his knowledge.	5 Anche nel tempo di ristorarsi nel letto, il sonno della notte la immaginazione di lui perturba.
6 There is little or no rest, and sleep is taken from him, as if on a day of keeping watch.	6 Poco, e quasi nulla ha di requie, e dipoi ne' suoi sogni, come quando uno sta di sentinella,
7 He is disturbed by a vision of his heart, as if he had escaped in a day of warfare. In the time of his salvation, he rose up and wondered that there was no fear.	7 E turbato dalle visioni del suo spirito, e come chi fugge nel giorno della battaglia, si sveglia allorché è in salvo, e ammira il suo vano timore:
8 This is so with all flesh, from man even to cattle, but upon sinners it is seven times as great.	8 Così va per tutti gli animali dall'uomo fino alla bestia, ma sette volte peggio pei peccatori.
9 Add to this: death, bloodshed, contention, and the spear, oppression, famine, and affliction, and scourges.	9 Oltre a ciò la morte, le uccisioni, la spada, le oppressioni, la fame, le rovine; i flagelli:
10 All these things have been created because of iniquity, and it is due to iniquity that the great flood was made.	10 Tutte queste cose furon fatte per gli iniqui, e per essi venne il diluvio.
11 All things that are of the earth shall return to the earth, and all waters shall return to the sea.	11 Tutto quel, che vien dalla terra torna nella terra, come tutte le acque ritornano al mare.
12 All bribery and iniquity will be wiped away, but faith shall stand forever.	12 Tutte le largizioni, e le ingiustizie periranno; ma la rettitudine sussisterà per tutti i secoli.
13 The substance of the unjust will dry up like a river, and will pass away with a noise like loud thunder in a rainstorm.	13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti si seccheranno come un torrente, e il loro fracasso è come di un gran tuono in tempo di pioggia.
14 When he opens his hands, he will rejoice. So will transgressors pass away at the consummation.	14 Uno si allegrerà nell'aprire la mano; ma i prevaricatori alla fine anderanno in fumo.
15 The descendents of the impious will not produce many branches, for they may be compared to dirty roots at the edge of a rock.	15 I nipoti degli empj non moltiplicheranno i rami loro, e le radici immonde sulla cima di un masso fanno romore.
16 The weeds, which grow above every water and beside the banks of the river, will be uprooted before all the grass.	16 Come ogni erba verde in sito umido, e sul margine del fiume è spiantata prima d'ogni altra erba.
17 Grace is like a paradise of blessings, and mercy continues for eternity.	17 La benignità è come un giardino benedetto; e la misericordia non perisce giammai.
18 The life of a worker, when content with what is sufficient, will become sweet, and in it you will find a treasure.	18 Dolce è la vita dell'operaio contento di sua sorte, e in essa egli troverà un tesoro.
19 Sons, and the building of a city, will establish a name, but an immaculate wife will be ranked above these things.	19 Danno un nome di durata i figliuoli, e la fondazione di una città; ma a queste cose sarà preferita una moglie immacolata.
20 Wine and music rejoice the heart, but the love of wisdom is above them both.	20 Il vino, e la musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più di ambedue que'ste cose l'amore della sapienza.
21 The flute and the psaltery make a sweet melody, but a pleasant word is above them both.	21 Il flauto, e il saltero fan soave concerto, ma l'un, e l'altro è superato da una lingua soave.
22 Your eye desires elegance and beauty, but verdant fields are above these things.	22 Piacerà al tuo occhio la venustà, o la bellezza, ma più di queste i verdeggianti seminati.
23 A friend and a companion meet one another in time, but above them both is a wife with her husband.	23 L'amico, e il compagno, che vengono opportunamente (son graditi), ina più dell'uno, e dell'altro una moglie unita col marito.
24 Brothers are a help in time of tribulation, but mercy will liberate, more so than they will.	24 I fratelli sono un buon soccorso nel tempo di afflizione; ma la misericordia più di essi è atta a salvare.
25 Gold and silver provide a firm position for the feet, but well-spoken counsel is above them both.	25 L'oro, e l'argento tengono l'uomo in piedi, ma più di essi piace il buon consiglio.
26 Ability and strength lift up the heart, but the fear of the Lord is above these things.	26 Le ricchezze, e il valore ingrandiscono il cuore: ma più di queste cose il timor del Signore.
27 There is no loss in the fear of the Lord, and it has no need to ask for assistance.	27 Non manca mai nulla al timore di Dio, e con esso non occorre cercar chi ajuti.
28 The fear of the Lord is like a paradise of blessings, and they have covered it above all glory.	28 Il timor del Signore è come un giardino di benedizione, egli è ammantato di magnificenza, che ogni altra sorpassa.
29 Son, in your lifetime you should not be indigent, for it is better to die than to be destitute.	29 Figliuolo, nel tempo di tua vita non ridurti in mendicità; perocché o meglio morire, che mendicare.
30 The life of him who looks to another man’s table should not be thought of as a way of life. For he feeds his life with another man’s food.	30 Un uomo, che ha l'occhio alla mensa altrui, non impiega sua vita a provvedere il suo vitto, perché si sostenta della pietanza d'un altro:
31 But a disciplined and well-taught man will take care of himself.	31 Ma un uomo ben educato, e saggio si guarderà da tal cosa.
32 Scarcity will seem sweet to the mouth of the imprudent, but a fire will burn in his belly.	32 Alla bocca dello stolto sarà dolce la mendicità, e nel ventre di lui arderà il fuoco.
