1 So all the Israelites came out as one man: from Dan to Beer-sheba, and from the land of Gilead, the community was gathered to the LORD at Mizpah.	1 І двигнулися всі сини Ізраїля й зібралась уся громада, як один чоловік, від Дана аж до Версавії, і Гілеад-землі, перед Господом у Міцпі.
2 The leaders of all the people and all the tribesmen of Israel, four hundred thousand foot soldiers who were swordsmen, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God.	2 І голови всього народу, усіх колін Ізраїля, з’явились на зборах Божого народу: чотириста тисяч чоловік піхотинців, озброєних мечами.
3 Meanwhile, the Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites asked to be told how the crime had taken place,	3 Сини Веніямина довідалися, що сини Ізраїля пішли у Міцпу. Сини Ізраїля ж говорили: «Скажіть, як сталось те ганебне діло?»
4 and the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, testified: "My concubine and I went into Gibeah of Benjamin for the night.	4 І відповів левіт, чоловік замученої молодиці: «Прибув я в Гівеа Веніямина з моєю наложницею, щоб там переночувати;
5 But the citizens of Gibeah rose up against me by night and surrounded the house in which I was. Me they attempted to kill, and my concubine they abused so that she died.	5 та горожани Гівеа піднялись проти мене й обступили вночі хату, де я перебував; мене мали на думці вбити, а наложницю мою насилували так, що вона й умерла.
6 So I took my concubine and cut her up and sent her through every part of the territory of Israel, because of the monstrous crime they had committed in Israel.	6 Тоді я взяв мою наложницю, порубав її на шматки та й Розіслав по всіх округах ізраїльського спадкоємства; бо вони вчинили ганебне та соромне діло в Ізраїлі.
7 Now that you are all here, O Israelites, state what you propose to do."	7 Ось усі ви, сини Ізраїля, тут; тож розберіть цю справу й порадьте, що чинити.»
8 All the people rose as one man to say, "None of us is to leave for his tent or return to his home.	8 Піднявсь увесь народ, як один муж, і заявив: «Ніхто з нас не піде додому, ніхто не повернеться до хати!
9 Now as for Gibeah, this is what we will do: We will proceed against it by lot,	9 От що зробимо з Гівеа: підемо проти неї по жеребку.
10 taking from all the tribes of Israel ten men for every hundred, a hundred for every thousand, a thousand for every ten thousand, and procuring supplies for the soldiers who will go to deal fully and suitably with Gibeah of Benjamin for the crime it committed in Israel."	10 Візьмемо з усіх колін Ізраїля по десятку чоловік з кожної тисячі, по тисячі з кожної десятки тисяч, і нехай вони подбають про харчі для людей, щоб ці пішли на Гівеа Веніямина та зробили з нею відповідно до ганьби, що вона вчинила в Ізраїлі.»
11 When, therefore, all the men of Israel without exception were leagued together against the city,	11 От і зібрались мужі Ізраїля проти міста, як один муж, одностайно.
12 the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, "What is this evil which has occurred among you?	12 І порозсилали коліна Ізраїля посланців по всьому коліну Веніямина сказати: «Що то за злочин між вами стався?
13 Now give up these corrupt men of Gibeah, that we may put them to death and thus purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites refused to accede to the demand of their brothers, the Israelites.	13 Зараз же мусите видати нам тих нікчемних людців з Гівеа, а ми скараємо їх на горло й викорінимо ганьбу з Ізраїля.» Та веніяминяни не хотіли вволити волю братів своїх, синів Ізраїля.
14 Instead, the Benjaminites assembled from their other cities to Gibeah, to do battle with the Israelites.	14 Ба більше, вони позбиралися з інших міст у Гівеа, щоб виступити на війну з синами Ізраїля.
15 The number of the Benjaminite swordsmen from the other cities on that occasion was twenty-six thousand, in addition to the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 І налічено того дня синів Веніямина з різних їхніх міст двадцять шість тисяч озброєних, опріч мешканців міста Гівеа, яких налічено сімсот добірних чоловік.
16 Included in this total were seven hundred picked men who were left-handed, every one of them able to sling a stone at a hair without missing.	16 Між усіма тими людьми було сімсот добірних ліваків; кожен з них був здатний влучити камінцем із пращі у волос, не схибивши.
17 Meanwhile the other Israelites who, without Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen ready for battle,	17 Синів Ізраїля, без веніяминян, налічено чотириста тисяч чоловік, озброєних мечами, всі завзяті вояки.
18 moved on to Bethel and consulted God. When the Israelites asked who should go first in the attack on the Benjaminites, the LORD said, "Judah shall go first."	18 Рушили сини Ізраїля й пішли в Бетел питати Бога й казали: «Хто з нас має виступити першим у бій із синами Веніямина?» Господь відказав: «Юда буде перший!»
19 The next day the Israelites advanced on Gibeah with their forces.	19 Двигнулися сини Ізраїля вранці й отаборились під Гівеа;
20 On the day the Israelites drew up in battle array at Gibeah for the combat with Benjamin,	20 потім сини Ізраїля виступили до бою проти веніяминян, ставши навпроти них лавою коло Гівеа.
21 the Benjaminites came out of the city and felled twenty-two thousand men of Israel.	21 Виступили сини Веніямина з Гівеа та й поклали того дня двадцять дві тисячі ізраїльтян трупом.
22 But though the Israelite soldiers took courage and again drew up for combat in the same place as on the previous day,	22 Але народ, мужі ізраїльські, наповнилися знову духом та й вишикувались до бою на тім самім місці, що першого дня,
23 Then the Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening. "Shall I again engage my brother Benjamin in battle?" they asked the LORD; and the LORD answered that they should.	23 бо коли вони пішли були й стали плакати перед Господом у Бетелі до вечора й питали в Господа: «Чи виступати нам знову на синів Веніямина, нашого брата?» — Господь відказав: «Виступайте проти нього!»
24 when they met the Benjaminites for the second time,	24 І вдарили сини Ізраїля другого дня на синів Веніямина.
25 once again the Benjaminites who came out of Gibeah against them felled eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them swordsmen.	25 Але й другого дня вийшли веніяминяни проти них з Гівеа та й знов поклали трупом вісімнадцять тисяч синів Ізраїля, вояків, озброєних шаблями.
26 So the entire Israelite army went up to Bethel, where they wept and remained fasting before the LORD until evening of that day, besides offering holocausts and peace offerings before the LORD.	26 Тоді сини Ізраїля всім військом знялися й пішли в Бетел, і сиділи там, плачучи перед Господом, і постили того дня до самого вечора, й приносили Господеві всепалення та мирні жертви.
27 When the Israelites consulted the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,	27 І питали сини Ізраїля в Господа — бо там того часу був ковчег Божого свідоцтва,
28 and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was ministering to him in those days), and asked, "Shall I go out again to battle with Benjamin, my brother, or shall I desist?" the LORD said, "Attack! for tomorrow I will deliver him into your power."	28 й Пінхас, син Єлеазара, сина Арона, служив того часу перед ним і питався: «Чи наступати нам знову боєм на синів Веніямина, нашого брата, чи залишити?» І відказав Господь: «Наступайте, бо взавтра я дам їх у ваші руки!»
29 So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.	29 Тоді Ізраїль поставив засідку навколо Гівеа.
30 The Israelites went up against the Benjaminites for the third time and formed their line of battle at Gibeah as on other occasions.	30 Третього дня вийшли сини Ізраїля проти синів Веніямина й вишикувалися лавами до бою при Гівеа, як і за перших разів.
31 The Benjaminites went out to meet them, and in the beginning they killed off about thirty of the Israelite soldiers in the open field, just as on the other occasions.	31 Сини Веніямина вирушили проти війська й віддалились від міста й заходились, як перші рази, класти декого трупом на шляхах, з яких один веде в Бетел, а другий на Гівеа, і вбили до тридцять мужів ізраїльських.
32 Therefore the Benjaminites thought, "We are defeating them as before"; not realizing that disaster was about to overtake them. The Israelites, however, had planned the flight so as to draw them away from the city onto the highways. They were drawn away from the city onto the highways, of which the one led to Bethel, the other to Gibeon.	32 Сини Веніямина думали собі: вони, мовляв, полягли перед нами, як і першим разом. А сини Ізраїля умовились: «Утікаймо, щоб відтягнути їх від міста на биті шляхи.»
33 And then all the men of Israel rose from their places. They re-formed their ranks at Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in ambush rushed from their place west of Gibeah,	33 Схопились тоді мужі Ізраїля зо свого місця та й стали лавами під Ваал-Тамаром, а засідка Ізраїля вийшла зо свого сховку на захід від Гівеа.
34 ten thousand picked men from all Israel, and advanced against the city itself. In a fierce battle,	34 І наступило тоді на Гівеа десять тисяч добірного війська з усього Ізраїля, й зчинився запеклий бій. Та веніяминянам і на думку не спало, що на них насувається лихо.
35 the LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel; and on that day the Israelites killed twenty-five thousand one hundred men of Benjamin, all of them swordsmen.	35 І розбив Господь Веніямина перед Ізраїлем, і поклали сини Ізраїля того дня трупом двадцять п’ять тисяч і сто чоловік веніяминян, озброєних мечами.
36 To the Benjaminites it had looked as though the enemy were defeated, for the men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, trusting in the ambush they had set at Gibeah.	36 Нарешті сини Веніямина збагнули, що їх розгромлено. Мужі ізраїльські відступили перед Веніямином, бо звірились на засідку, що її поставили коло Гівеа.
37 But then the men in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, overran it, and put the whole city to the sword.	37 Кинулась та засідка раптом на Гівеа й, двигнувшись наперед, вибила лезом меча все місто.
38 Now, the other Israelites had agreed with the men in ambush on a smoke signal they were to send up from the city.	38 Між мужами ізраїльськими та тими, що сиділи в засідці, було умовлено, що дадуть знак: пустять угору великий дим над містом.
39 And though the men of Benjamin had begun by killing off some thirty of the men of Israel, under the impression that they were defeating them as surely as in the earlier fighting, the Israelites wheeled about to resist	39 І от, коли мужі ізраїльські обернулись у бою, немов до втечі, веніяминяни заходилися класти їх трупом, поклавши щось із тридцять чоловік та думавши собі: розбили ми їх, мовляв, цілком, як у першому бою.
40 as the smoke of the signal column began to rise up from the city. It was when Benjamin looked back and saw the whole city in flames against the sky	40 Аж тут почав здійматися знак над містом, отой стовп диму, і, як озирнулись веніяминяни позад себе, то все місто полум’яніло під саме небо.
41 that the men of Israel wheeled about. Therefore the men of Benjamin were thrown into confusion, for they realized the disaster that had overtaken them.	41 Обернулись тоді мужі ізраїльські, а веніяминяни настрахались, бо зрозуміли, що над ними зависла погибель,
42 They retreated before the men of Israel in the direction of the desert, with the fight being pressed against them. In their very midst, meanwhile, those who had been in the city were spreading destruction.	42 тож подались від мужів ізраїльських шляхом на пустиню. Але військо натискало на них, та й ті, що вискочили з міста, нищили їх зосередженим наступом.
43 The men of Benjamin had been surrounded, and were now pursued to a point east of Gibeah,	43 І обступили вони Веніямина й гнали його безупину, й били аж до місця, що проти Гівеа, на схід сонця.
44 while eighteen thousand of them fell, warriors to a man.	44 Полягло тоді в Веніямина вісімнадцять тисяч чоловік, а все ж то були відважні вояки.
45 The rest turned and fled through the desert to the rock Rimmon. But on the highways the Israelites picked off five thousand men among them, and chasing them up to Gidom, killed another two thousand of them there.	45 Решта веніяминян пішла врозтіч у пустиню, на Ріммон-скелю, але ізраїльтяни на шляхах вистинали ще з п’ять тисяч чоловік і гналися за ними аж до Гідеону, вбивши з тих дві тисячі чоловік.
46 Those of Benjamin who fell on that day were in all twenty-five thousand swordsmen, warriors to a man.	46 Усіх же веніяминян, що того дня загинули, було двадцять п’ять тисяч чоловік, озброєних мечами, й усі були вони хоробрі вояки.
47 But six hundred others who turned and fled through the desert reached the rock Rimmon, where they remained for four months.	47 У пустиню ж завернуло й втекло на Ріммон-скелю шістсот чоловік, і сиділи вони чотири місяці на Ріммон-скелі.
48 The men of Israel withdrew through the territory of the Benjaminites, putting to the sword the inhabitants of the cities, the livestock, and all they chanced upon. Moreover they destroyed by fire all the cities they came upon.	48 Мужі ж ізраїльські обернулись назад проти синів Веніямина й вистинали лезом меча все місто, і людину, й скотину, й усе, що їм попалося; та й міста, що їм зустрілись, пустили вони з димом.
