I said to myself, "Come, now, let me try you with pleasure and the enjoyment of good things." But behold, this too was vanity.1 Tad rekoh u srcu svom: »Daj da okušam užitak i vidim što naslada pruža« – ali gle: i to je ispraznost!
Of laughter I said: "Mad!" and of mirth: "What good does this do?"2 O smijehu rekoh: »Ludost je«; o užitku: »Čemu valja?«
I thought of beguiling my senses with wine, though my mind was concerned with wisdom, and of taking up folly, until I should understand what is best for men to do under the heavens during the limited days of their life.3 Odlučih tijelo krijepiti vinom, a srce posvetiti mudrosti; poželjeh prigrliti i ludost, kako bih spoznao usrećuje li ljude ono što pod nebesima čine za izbrojenih dana svojega života.
I undertook great works; I built myself houses and planted vineyards;4 Učinih velika djela: sazidah sebi palače, zasadih vinograde;
I made gardens and parks, and set out in them fruit trees of all sorts.5 uredih perivoje i voćnjake, nasadih u njima voćke svakojake.
And I constructed for myself reservoirs to water a flourishing woodland.6 Načinih jezera da plodna sadišta natapam.
I acquired male and female slaves, and slaves were born in my house. I also had growing herds of cattle and flocks of sheep, more than all who had been before me in Jerusalem.7 Nakupovah robova i robinja, imadoh i sluge domaće, a tako i stada krupne i sitne stoke više no itko prije mene u Jeruzalemu.
I amassed for myself silver and gold, and the wealth of kings and provinces. I got for myself male and female singers and all human luxuries.8 Nagomilah srebro i zlato i blago kraljeva i pokrajina, nabavih pjevače i pjevačice i svakoga raskošja ljudskog, sve škrinju na škrinju.
I became great, and I stored up more than all others before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom, too, stayed with me.9 I postadoh tako velik, veći no bilo tko prije mene u Jeruzalemu; a nije me ni mudrost moja ostavila.
Nothing that my eyes desired did I deny them, nor did I deprive myself of any joy, but my heart rejoiced in the fruit of all my toil. This was my share for all my toil.10 I što god su mi oči poželjele, nisam im uskratio, niti branih srcu svojemu kakva veselja, već se srce moje veselilo svakom trudu mojem, i takva bî nagrada svakom mojem naporu.
But when I turned to all the works that my hands had wrought, and to the toil at which I had taken such pains, behold! all was vanity and a chase after wind, with nothing gained under the sun.11 A onda razmotrih sva svoja djela, sve napore što uložih da do njih dođem – i gle, sve je to opet ispraznost i pusta tlapnja! I ništa nema valjano pod suncem.
For what will the man do who is to come after the king? What men have already done! I went on to the consideration of wisdom, madness and folly.12 Okrenuh zatim misao svoju mudrosti, gluposti i ludosti. Što, na priliku, čini kraljev nasljednik? Ono što je već učinjeno.
And I saw that wisdom has the advantage over folly as much as light has the advantage over darkness.13 I spoznadoh da je bolja mudrost od ludosti, kao što je svjetlost bolja od tame.
The wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness.Yet I knew that one lot befalls both of them.14 Mudracu su oči u glavi,
a bezumnik luta u tami.
Ali također znam da obojicu stiže ista kob.
So I said to myself, if the fool's lot is to befall me also, why then should I be wise? Where is the profit for me? And I concluded in my heart that this too is vanity.15 Zato rekoh u sebi: »Kakva je sudbina luđaku, takva je i meni. Čemu onda žudjeti za mudrošću?« I rekoh u srcu: »I to je ispraznost!«
Neither of the wise man nor of the fool will there be an abiding remembrance, for in days to come both will have been forgotten. How is it that the wise man dies as well as the fool!16 Jer trajna spomena nema ni mudru ni bezumniku: obojicu će poslije nekog vremena prekriti zaborav! I, jao, mudrac mora umrijeti kao i bezumnik.
Therefore I loathed life, since for me the work that is done under the sun is evil; for all is vanity and a chase after wind.17 Omrznuh život, jer mi se učini mučnim sve što se zbiva pod suncem: sve je ispraznost i pusta tlapnja.
And I detested all the fruits of my labor under the sun, because I must leave them to a man who is to come after me.18 Zamrzih sve za što sam se pod suncem trudio i što sad ostavljam svome nasljedniku.
And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruits of my wise labor under the sun. This also is vanity.19 Tko zna hoće li on biti mudar ili lud? Pa ipak on će biti gospodar sve moje muke u koju uložih sav svoj napor i mudrost pod suncem. I to je ispraznost.
So my feelings turned to despair of all the fruits of my labor under the sun.20 I stao sam srcem očajavati zbog velikog napora kojim sam se trudio pod suncem.
For here is a man who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and to another, who has not labored over it, he must leave his property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune.21 Jer čovjek se trudi mudro i umješno i uspješno, pa sve to mora ostaviti u baštinu drugomu koji se oko toga nije uopće trudio. I to je ispraznost i velika nevolja.
For what profit comes to a man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun?22 Jer što on dobiva za sav svoj napor i trud koji je pod suncem podnio?
All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.23 Jer svi su njegovi dani doista mukotrpni, poslovi mu puni brige; čak ni noću ne miruje srce njegovo. I to je ispraznost.
There is nothing better for man than to eat and drink and provide himself with good things by his labors. Even this, I realized, is from the hand of God.24 Nema čovjeku druge sreće već jesti i piti i biti zadovoljan svojim poslom. I to je, vidim, dar Božje ruke.
For who can eat or drink apart from him?25 Jer tko bi mogao jesti, tko li nezadovoljan biti, osim po njemu?
For to whatever man he sees fit he gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering possessions to be given to whatever man God sees fit. This also is vanity and a chase after wind.26 Mudrost, spoznaju, radost on daruje onom tko mu je po volji, a grešniku nameće zadaću da sabire i skuplja za onoga tko je po volji Bogu. I to je ispraznost i pusta tlapnja.
