Éxodo 17

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Toda la comunidad de los israelitas partió del desierto de Sin, a la orden de Yahveh, para continuar sus jornadas; y acamparon en Refidim, donde el pueblo no encontró agua para beber.	1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.
2 El pueblo entonces se querelló contra Moisés, diciendo: «Danos agua para beber.» Respondióles Moisés: «¿Por qué os querelláis conmigo? ¿Por qué tentáis a Yahveh?»	2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'
3 Pero el pueblo, torturado por la sed, siguió murmurando contra Moisés: «¿Nos has hecho salir de Egipto para hacerme morir de sed, a mí, a mis hijos y a mis ganados?»	3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'
4 Clamó Moisés a Yahveh y dijo: «¿ Qué puedo hacer con este pueblo? Poco falta para que me apedreen.»	4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'
5 Respondió Yahveh a Moisés: «Pasa delante del pueblo, llevando contigo algunos de los ancianos de Israel; lleva también en tu mano el cayado con que golpeaste el Río y vete,	5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.
6 que allí estaré yo ante ti, sobre la piña, en Horeb; golpearás la peña, y saldrá de ella agua para que beba el pueblo.» Moisés lo hizo así a la vista de los ancianos de Israel.	6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.
7 Aquel lugar se llamó Massá y Meribá, a causa de la querella de los israelitas, y por haber tentado a Yahveh, diciendo: «¿Está Yahveh entre nosotros o no?»	7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'
8 Vinieron los amalecitas y atacaron a Israel en Refidim.	8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.
9 Moisés dijo a Josué: «Elígete algunos hombres, y sal mañana a combatir contra Amalec. Yo me pondré en la cima del monte, con el cayado de Dios en mi mano.»	9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'
10 Josué cumplió las órdenes de Moisés, y salió a combatir contra Amalec. Mientras tanto, Moisés, Aarón y Jur subieron a la cima del monte.	10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .
11 Y sucedió que, mientras Moisés tenía alzadas las manos, prevalecía Israel; pero cuando las bajaba, prevalecía Amalec.	11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.
12 Se le cansaron las manos a Moisés, y entonces ellos tomaron una piedra y se la pusieron debajo; él se sentó sobre ella, mientras Aarón y Jur le sostenían las manos, uno a un lado y otro al otro. Y así resistieron sus manos hasta la puesta del sol.	12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,
13 Josué derrotó a Amalec y a su pueblo a filo de espada.	13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.
14 Yahveh dijo Moisés: «Escribe esto en un libro para que sirva de recuerdo, y haz saber a Josué que yo borraré por completo la memoria de Amalec de debajo de los cielos.»	14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'
15 Después edificó Moisés un altar, al que puso por nombre Yahveh Nissí	15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi
16 diciendo: «La bandera de Yahveh en la mano; Yahveh está en guerra con Amalec de generación en generación.»	16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'
