1 E intervenne in que' di, che i Filistei si raunarono a battaglia: e Israel gli uscìo incontro alla battaglia, e puose campo presso alla pietra dell' adiutorio. E i Filistei vennero in Afec.	1 and, for al Israel, the word of Samuel was as the word of Yahweh; since Eli was very old and his sonspersisted in their wicked behaviour towards Yahweh. It happened at that time that the Philistines mustered tomake war on Israel and Israel went out to meet them in war, pitching camp near Ebenezer while the Philistinespitched camp at Aphek.
2 E ordinarono la schiera contro Israel; e cominciata la battaglia, Israel voltarono le reni a' Filistei; e in quella battaglia furono morti, per li campi, quasi IIII milia uomini.	2 The Philistines drew up their battle-line against Israel, the fighting was fierce, and Israel was beaten bythe Philistines: about four thousand men in their ranks were kil ed on the field of battle.
3 E ritornò il popolo al campo; e quelli che erano maggiori in Israel per nascimento, dissero: perchè ci ha oggi percossi il Signore dinanzi a' Filistei? Facciamo venire a noi di Silo l'arca del patto del Signore; e venga in mezzo di noi, e salvici delle mani de' nostri nemici.	3 When the troops returned to camp, the elders of Israel said, 'Why has Yahweh caused us to be beatenby the Philistines today? Let us fetch the ark of our God from Shiloh so that, when it goes with us, it may save usfrom the clutches of our enemies.'
4 E mandò il popolo in Silo, e tolsero indi l'arca del patto del Signore degli eserciti, il quale siede sopra i Cherubini: e due figliuoli di Eli erano con l'arca del patto del Signore, Ofni e Finees,	4 So the troops sent to Shiloh and brought away the ark of Yahweh Sabaoth enthroned on the wingedcreatures; the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, came with the ark.
5 E venendo nel campo l'arca del patto del Signore, tutto Israel gridava con grande voce, e resonò la terra.	5 When the ark of Yahweh arrived in the camp, al Israel raised a great war cry so that the earthresounded.
6 E i Filistei udirono la voce del grido, e dissero che voce è questa del grido nel campo degli Ebrei? E conobbero che l'arca di Dio era venuta nel campo.	6 When the Philistines heard the noise of the war cry, they said, 'What can this great war cry in theHebrew camp mean?' And they realised that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.
7 E avendo grande paura, i Filistei dissero: venuto è Dio nel campo. E piagneano, e diceano:	7 At this, the Philistines were afraid; for they said, 'God has come into the camp. Disaster!' they said. 'Fornothing like this has ever happened before.
8 Guai a noi! non fue tanta letizia ieri e l' altro: guai a noi! chi ne salva della mano di questi alti Idii? questi sono gli Dii che ferirono Egitto, nel deserto, d'ogni piaga.	8 Disaster! Who will rescue us from the clutches of this mighty God? This was the God who struck downEgypt with every kind of misfortune in the desert.
9 Ma confortatevi, e siate uomini, Filistei, acciò che voi non serviate agli Ebrei, sì come loro servirono a noi; confortatevi e combattete.	9 But take courage and be men, Philistines, or you wil become slaves to the Hebrews as they have beenslaves to you. Be men and fight.'
10 E combatterono gli Filistei, e Israel fu sconfitto, e ciascuno fuggì nel suo tabernacolo; e fu fatta piaga molto grande; e morirono d' Israel XXX milia di pedoni.	10 So the Philistines gave battle and Israel was defeated, each man fleeing to his tent. The slaughter wasvery great: on the Israelite side, thirty thousand foot soldiers fel .
11 E l'arca di Dio fu presa; e due figliuoli di Eli, cioè Ofni e Finees, vi furono morti.	11 The ark of God was captured too, and Hophni and Phinehas the two sons of Eli died.
12 E uno uomo (della turba) di Beniamin corse dalla battaglia, e in quello dì venne in Silo colle vestimenta squarciate, e il capo polveroso.	12 A Benjaminite ran from the battle-line and reached Shiloh the same day, his clothes torn and dust onhis head.
13 E vegnendo quello, Eli sedeva in su una seggiola verso la via, e aspettava; però che il suo cuore era pauroso per l'arca di Dio. E quello uomo, poi ch' egli entrò, significò alla città; e tutta la città pianse.	13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat beside the gate watching the road, for his heart wastrembling for the ark of God. The man came into the town and told the news, whereupon cries of anguish fil edthe town.
14 Ed Eli udì il suono del grido, e disse: che suono di grido è questo? E quelli con fretta venne, e nunciollo a Eli.	14 Eli heard the sound and asked, 'What does this uproar mean?' The man hurried on and told Eli.
15 Ed Eli era di LxxxxvIII anni; e i suoi occhii erano intenebrati, e non potea vedere.	15 Eli was ninety-eight years old; his gaze was fixed; he was blind.
16 E disse a Eli: io son colui che è venuto dalla battaglia, e oggi son fuggito del campo. E quelli disse a lui: figliuolo mio, che è fatto?	16 The man said to Eli, 'I have come from the camp. I escaped from the battle-line today.' 'My son,' saidEli, 'what happened?'
17 E rispondendo, quegli che nunziava disse: il popolo è fuggito dinanzi a' Filistei, e grande ruina è fatta nel popolo; e sopra di questo due tuoi figliuoli, cioè Ofni e Finees, sì sono morti; e l'arca di Dio è presa.	17 The messenger replied, 'Israel has fled before the Philistines; the army has been utterly routed. Whatis worse, your two sons are dead and the ark of God has been captured.'
18 E avendo quegli nominata l'arca di Dio, cadde adietro della seggiola presso all' uscio; e fiaccato il capo, si morì. Ed era uomo antico e grande di tempo; ed egli giudicò Israel xL anni.	18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his seat by the gate and broke his neck anddied, for he was old and heavy. He had been judge of Israel for forty years.
19 E la sua nuora, moglie di Finees, pregna e presso al parto, udito il messo, che l'arca di Dio era presa, e che il suo suocero e il suo marito erano morti, incurvossi e partorì; però che erano venuti a lei subito i dolori.	19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near her time. When she heard thenews that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead she croucheddown and gave birth, for her labour pains had come on.
20 E nel punto della sua morte, dissero a lei quelle che gli erano dintorno: non temere, però che tu hai partorito uno figliuolo. La quale non respuose loro, e non v'attendè.	20 When she was at the point of death, the women at her side said, 'Do not be afraid; you have givenbirth to a son.' But she did not answer and took no notice.
21 E chiamò il fanciullo Icabod, dicendo: la gloria di Dio è tolta via d'Israel, imperò che l'arca di Dio è presa, e per lo suocero suo e per lo marito suo;	21 She named the child Ichabod, saying, 'The glory has gone from Israel,' al uding to the capture of theark of God and to her father-in-law and husband.
22 e disse: ella è tolta la gloria di Dio d' Israel, però che è presa l'arca di Dio.	22 She said, 'The glory has gone from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.'
