1 E David ascendeo indi; e abitò nei fortissimi luoghi di Engaddi.	1 Then David ascended from there, and he lived in very secure places in Engedi.
2 E ritornato Saul, avendo perseguitato gli Filistei, fugli detto: David si è nel deserto di Engaddi.	2 And when Saul had returned after pursuing the Philistines, they reported to him, saying, “Behold, David is in the desert of Engedi.”
3 E Saul, tolti III milia uomini eletti di tutto Israel, andò a cercare di David e de' suoi uomini, eziandio sopra i sassi altissimi, li quali sono vie solo alle capre selvatiche.	3 Therefore, Saul, taking three thousand elect men from all of Israel, traveled in order to search for David and his men, even upon the most broken rocks, which are passable only to mountain goats.
4 E pervennero alle mandrie delle pecore, le quali si trovavano in via; dove ch' era una spelonca, nella quale entrò Saul per purgare il ventre. E David coi suoi erano nascosi, in parte più dentro, in questa spelonca.	4 And he arrived at the sheepfolds, which presented themselves along the way. And a cave was in that place, which Saul entered, so that he might ease his bowels. But David and his men were hiding in the interior part of the cave.
5 E dissero a David li servi suoi: ecco il dì, del quale Iddio ti disse: io ti darò il tuo nemico nelle tue mani, acciò che tu gli facci sì come negli occhi tuoi piacerà. E David si levò suso, e occultamente tagliò l'orlo del vestimento di Saul.	5 And the servants of David said to him: “Behold the day, about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy to you, so that you may do to him as it will be pleasing in your eyes.’ ” Then David rose up, and he quietly cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.
6 ...	6 After this, his own heart struck David, because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.
7 E disse agli uomini suoi; perdonimi Iddio, ch' io non farò così al Signore mio, unto da Dio, che io metta in lui le mie mani, però ch' egli è cristo di Dio. (Vive il Signore che se Iddio nol ferirà, e non verrà il dì ch' egli moia o perisca in battaglia, Iddio mi sia propizio, ch' io non metterò la mano in lo cristo del Signore).	7 And he said to his men: “May the Lord be gracious to me, lest I do this thing to my lord, the Christ of the Lord, so that I lay my hand upon him. For he is the Christ of the Lord.”
8 E ruppe David con parole i servi suoi, e non permise che il toccassero. E Saul, levandosi, andava per lo incominciato cammino.	8 And David restrained his men with his words, and he would not permit them to rise up against Saul. And so Saul, going out of the cave, continued to undertake his journey.
9 E David, uscendo dopo lui, chiamò e disse: Signore, mio re. E Saul guardò adietro sè; e David adorò, chinandosi insino a terra.	9 Then David also rose up after him. And departing from the cave, he cried out behind the back of Saul, saying: “My lord, the king!” And Saul looked behind him. And David, bowing himself face down to the ground, reverenced.
10 E disse a Saul: perchè intendi le parole degli uomini che dicono: David va cercando male contra di te?	10 And he said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say: ‘David seeks evil against you?’
11 Ecco, i tuoi occhii hanno veduto che oggi Iddio t'ha dato nelle mie mani in questa spelonca; e pensai di ucciderti, ma il mio occhio ti perdonò, e dissi: non estenderò la mano nel mio Signore, perchè egli è cristo di Dio.	11 Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord has delivered you into my hand, in the cave. And I thought that I might kill you. But my eye has spared you. For I said: I will not extend my hand against my lord, for he is the Christ of the Lord.
12 Or considera più forte, padre mio; ecco l'orlo del tuo vestimento, ch' io l' hoe nelle mie mani; e tagliando la sommità del tuo vestimento, non ti volsi uccidere; onde vedi e considera che nella mano mia non è male nè iniquità, e non ho peccato in te; e tu guati la mia vita per toglierla via.	12 Moreover, see and know, O my father, the edge of your cloak in my hand. For though I cut off the top of your cloak, I was not willing to extend my hand against you. Turn your soul and see that there is no evil in my hand, nor any iniquity or sin against you. Yet you lie in wait for my life, so that you may take it away.
13 Iddio giudichi tra te e me, e facciami vendetta di te; ma la mia mano non sia in te	13 May the Lord judge between me and you. And may the Lord vindicate me from you. But my hand will not be against you.
14 Sì come si dice nel proverbio antico: DAGLI UOMINI EMPII NASCE LA EMPIETÀ. E la mia mano non sia in te.	14 So too, it is said in the ancient proverb, ‘From the impious, impiety will go forth.’ Therefore, my hand will not be upon you.
15 E chi persèguiti tu, re d'Israel? chi persèguiti tu? uno cane morto tu persèguiti, e una pulce.	15 Whom are you pursuing, O king of Israel? Whom are you pursuing? You are pursuing a dead dog, a single flea.
16 Sia Iddio giudice, e giudichi intra me e te; e iscampi me delle tue mani.	16 May the Lord be the judge, and may he judge between me and you. And may he see and judge my case, and rescue me from your hand.”
17 E compiuto di dire David a Saul queste parole, disse Saul: figliuolo mio David, questa è la tua voce. E levò Saul la sua voce, e pianse.	17 And when David had completed speaking words in this way to Saul, Saul said, “Could this be your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice, and he wept.
18 E disse a David: tu se' più giusto di me; e tu m' hai renduto bene, e io t'ho renduto male.	18 And he said to David: “You are more just than I am. For you have distributed good to me, but I have repaid evil to you.
19 Tu m' hai mostrato oggi, che tu m' hai fatto bene; come Iddio m' ha dato nelle tue mani, e non m' hai morto.	19 And you have revealed this day the good that you have done for me: how the Lord delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me.
20 Chi sarà quegli che trovando il suo nemico, il lascerà andare in buono viaggio? Ma Iddio ti renda buono merito per questo che oggi hai fatto in me.	20 For who, when he will have found his enemy, will release him along a good path? So may the Lord repay you for this good turn, because you have acted on my behalf this day.
21 E ora perchè so certissimamente che tu dèi regnare, e dèi avere nelle tue mani il regno d' Israel;	21 And now I know certainly that you shall be king, and you shall have the kingdom of Israel in your hand.
22 giurami in Dominedio, che tu non diserti dopo me il mio seme; della casa del mio padre non tollere il mio nome.	22 Swear to me in the Lord that you will not take away my offspring after me, nor take away my name from the house of my father.”
23 E giurò David a Saul. E Saul se n' andò a casa sua; e David colli suoi se n' andarono in luoghi più sicuri.	23 And David swore to Saul. Therefore, Saul went away to his own house. And David and his men ascended to places that were more secure.
