| 1 E poi che fue tornata alla suocera sua, sì udì da lei: figliuola mia, io ti voglio trovare riposo, e sì ti provvederò che tu abbi bene. | 1 Her mother-in-law Naomi then said, 'Daughter, is it not my duty to see you happily settled? |
| 2 Questo (uomo, disse la suocera, il quale ha nome) Booz, alle cui fanciulle tu t' accostasti nel campo, egli è del nostro parentado, e istasera si monda (il grano e) l' orzo nell' aia. | 2 And Boaz, the man with whose work-women you were, is he not our kinsman? Tonight he wil bewinnowing the barley on the threshing-floor. |
| 3 Adunque làvati, e ungiti, e vèstiti de' più netti vestimenti, e sì te ne va suso l' aia; e guarda che non ti vegga persona veruna, d' insino a tanto che avrà manicato e bevuto. | 3 So wash and perfume yourself, put on your cloak and go down to the threshing-floor. Don't let himrecognise you while he is stil eating and drinking. |
| 4 Ma quando sarà ito a dormire, considera bene il luogo dove dorme; e poi sì te ne verrai (pianamente) e sì iscoprirai il copritoio di sotto dal lato de' piedi, e gitteraiti quivi, e quivi (dormirai e) giacerai; ed egli ti dirà quello che tu dei fare. | 4 But when he lies down, take note where he lies, then go and turn back the covering at his feet and lie down yourself. He wil tell you what to do.' |
| 5 La quale sì respuose (e disse): ciò che mi comanderai, sì farò. | 5 Ruth said, 'I shal do everything you tel me.' |
| 6 E sì se n' andò giuso nell' aia, e fe' ciò che la suocera le avea comandato. | 6 So she went down to the threshing-floor and did everything her mother-in-law had told her. |
| 7 E avendo Booz mangiato e bevuto, e fatto uno poco più allegro, che in prima, fosse ito a dormire [a lato] al monte de' manipoli (dell' orzo e del grano, cioè a lato alla paglia) venne Rut nascosamente; e iscoperto il copritoio da' piedi di Booz, sì si gitto a dormire. | 7 When Boaz had finished eating and drinking, he went off happily and lay down beside the pile of barley.Ruth then quietly went, turned back the covering at his feet and lay down. |
| 8 Ed ecco, in su la mezza notte, sì si spaventò l'uomo (cioè Booz) e tutto si conturbò; (e puose mente) e vidde una femina la quale giacea ai piedi suoi. | 8 In the middle of the night, he woke up with a shock and looked about him; and there lying at his feet wasa woman. |
| 9 E sì gli disse: chi se' tu? E quella rispuose (e disse): io son Rut, la tua serva; pregoti che tu istendi uno poco il copritoio tuo sopra la serva tua, imperciò che mi sei parente. | 9 'Who are you?' he said; and she replied, 'I am your servant Ruth. Spread the skirt of your cloak overyour servant for you have the right of redemption over me.' |
| 10 E quelli disse: benedetta sie tu da Dio Signore, figliuola mia, e hai superata la prima misericordia con la posteriore; però che tu non sei ita dietro a' giovani, ovvero poveri ovvero ricchi. | 10 'May Yahweh bless you, daughter,' he said, 'for this second act of faithful love of yours is greater thanthe first, since you have not run after young men, poor or rich. |
| 11 Non avere adunque paura, ma ciò che tu dirai, sì farò (e dirò): imperò che sa tutto il popolo, il quale abita dentro alle porte della città, che tu se' femina di grande virtù. | 11 Don't be afraid, daughter, I shal do everything you ask, since the people at the gate of my town allknow that you are a woman of great worth. |
| 12 E non mi tengo ch' io ti sia il più prossimano per parentado, ma eccene un altro più propinquo di me. | 12 But, though it is true that I have the right of redemption over you, you have a kinsman closer thanmyself. |
| 13 Ripòsati ista notte; e fatta la mattina, se ti vorrà pigliare per moglie quegli ch' hae più ragione di me, però ch' egli sì t'è più parente (e affino) bene istà il fatto; ma se quegli non ti vorrà, (io ti dico che) senza dubbio veruno io ti piglierò per moglie, per lo vivo Iddio; dormi insino alla mattina. | 13 Stay here for tonight and, in the morning, if he wishes to exercise his right over you, very wel , let himredeem you. But if he does not wish to do so, then as Yahweh lives, I shal redeem you. Lie here til morning.' |
| 14 E dormi Rut, insino che fu passata la notte, a' piedi suoi. E levossi innanzi che gli uomini si conoscessono insieme; e sì le disse Booz: guarda che non sappia persona, che tu sie venuta qua. | 14 So she lay at his feet til morning, but got up before the hour when one man can recognise another;and he thought, 'It must not be known that this woman came to the threshing-floor.' |
| 15 E poi sì le disse: spandi il mantello tuo, con che ti copri, e tienlo con una mano e con l'altra. La quale estendendolo e tegnendolo, sì le misurò sei moggia d' orzo, e puòsegliele adosso. La quale portandolo entrò nella città. | 15 He then said, 'Let me have the cloak you are wearing, hold it out!' She held it out while he put sixmeasures of barley into it and then loaded it on to her; and off she went to the town. |
| 16 E venne alla suocera sua, la quale sì gli disse: che hai fatto, figliuola? E disse tutte quelle cose, che le avea fatte (e dette) questo uomo (cioè Booz). | 16 When Ruth got home, her mother-in-law asked her, 'How did things go with you, daughter?' She thentold her everything that the man had done for her. |
| 17 E disse: ecco che m' ha dato sei moggia (cioè sei stara) d'orzo, e disse: non voglio che tu torni vacua alla suocera tua. | 17 'He gave me these six measures of barley and said, "You must not go home empty-handed to yourmother-in-law." ' |
| 18 E disse Noemi: aspetta, figliuola mia, insino a tanto che veggiamo come riesce questo fatto: imperò che non cesserà questo uomo, s'egli non compie ciò che egli hae detto (e favellato). | 18 Naomi said, 'Do nothing, daughter, until you see how things have gone; I am sure he will not rest untilhe has settled the matter this very day.' |
