BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Queste sono le genti che lasciò Iddio Signore, acciò che per loro ammaestrasse i figliuoli d'Israel (e castigasse) e ancora tutti coloro i quali non aveano conosciute le battaglie de' Cananei;	1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars
2 acciò che i loro figliuoli poi apparassero di combattere co' loro nemici, e d'avere l'usanza (e il modo) di combattere.	2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):
3 In prima furono i cinque Satrapi (della gente) de' Filistei (cioè cinque priori) e tutti quanti i Cananei e Sidoni, e gli Evei i quali abitavano nel monte di Libano, del monte di Baal Ermon insino all' entrata di Emat.	3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.
4 E lasciogli, acciò che Israel si provasse in essi (e pigliasse esperienza con loro, e che vedessono bene) se loro udivano i comandamenti di Dio (e osservavano) i quali avea fatti e ordinati cogli padri loro per mano di Moisè (servo di Dio), o no.	4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.
5 E abitarono i figliuoli d' Israel nel mezzo dei Cananei e degli Etei e degli Amorrei e dei Ferezei ed Evei e degli Iebusei.	5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;
6 E menarono per mogli le loro figliuole; e loro diedero le loro figliuole ai loro figliuoli e servirono ai loro Dii.	6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.
7 E feceno male nel cospetto di Dio, e sì si dimenticarono dello Dio loro, sérvendo (all' idolo) Baalim e (all' idolo) Astarot.	7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.
8 E adirossi Iddio contro i figliuoli d' Israel, e si gli mise nelle mani (de' Cananei cioè) del re di Mesopotamia, che si chiama Cusan Rasataim (re di Mesopotamia), e sì gli servirono otto anni.	8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.
9 E poi gridarono (e chiamarono) a Dio Signore; il quale (sì gli esaudi, e suscitò loro e) diede loro per salvatore Otoniel, figliuolo di Cenez, fratello minore di Caleb, e sì gli liberò di servitù.	9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10 E fue in lui lo Spirito di Dio Signore, e sì giudicò i figliuoli d' Israel; e uscì fuori alla battaglia, e diedegli Iddio nelle sue mani Cusan Rasatim re di Siria, e sì lo (macerò e) domò.	10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.
11 E riposossi la terra (de' figliuoli d' Israel in pace) XL anni; e poi sì morì Otoniel figliuolo di Cenez.	11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.
12 (E puosonsi in cuore e andarono oltre) e aggionsono pure a far male i figliuoli d' Israel (nel cospetto e) dinanzi a Dio Signore; il quale sì confortò contro a loro (e provocò) Eglon re di Moab; imperciò che loro aveano fatto male nel cospetto di Dio Signore.	12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.
13 E sì gli diede compagnia i figliuoli d' Ammon e d' Amalec; e sì andò e isconfisse (e uccise) Israel, e sì possedette la città delle palme.	13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.
14 E servirono i figliuoli d' Israel Eglon, re di Moab, XVIII anni.	14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.
15 E poi chiamarono (e gridarono) a Dio; il quale (sì gli esaudì, e) suscitò loro e diede per salvatore (e giudice) il figliuolo (nobile e forte) di Gera, figliuolo di Iemini, il quale si chiamava Aod, il quale usava ciascuna mano per la destra, (cioè così era forte e libero della mano ritta come della manca, e della mano manca come della ritta). E per lui sì mandarono i figliuoli d'Israel (denari e) doni ad Eglon re di Moab.	15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
16 Il quale si fece uno coltello a due tagli (e appuntatissimo), il quale sì avea nel mezzo una punta di lunghezza d' una spanna; e sì lo si cinse sotto la guarnaccia dal lato ritto.	16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.
17 E portoe (e diede) questi denari a Eglon re (e molto e) troppo grasso (e abbondevole).	17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.
18 E avendoli dati Aod i doni (e i denari), andò diretto ai compagni i quali erano venuti con lui.	18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;
19 E ritornato di Galgala, dov' erano gl' idoli, sì disse Aod al re: ora t' hoe io a dire una parola molto secreta. E quegli sì comandò che ogni uomo stesse cheto (e uscirono fuori); e usciti fuori tutti quanti coloro i quali gli stavano d'intorno,	19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.
20 sì entrò Aod; ma il re sedeva in su una sedia la quale era dove si cenava la state, e sì era solo; e disse Aod: io t'hoe a dire una parola da parte di Dio Signore. Il quale incontanente iscese giuso della sedia.	20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.
21 E sì istese Aod la sua mano manca, tolse questo coltello il quale avea dal lato ritto, e sì gli lo ficcò fortemente nel ventre,	21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.
22 intanto che insino alla manica e tutto il ferro gli entroe nel ventre, e nella grassezza (del ventre) sì si stringette (sì forte) che niente si vedea. E non trasse fuori il coltello, ma così come l'avea (percosso e) ferito, così lo lasciò nel corpo; e incontanente per lo luogo secreto della natura (cioè di sotto) inco minciò del corpo a gittare lo sterco (e il fastidio dentro).	22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.
23 E Aod sollecitamente chiudendo bene gli usci del luogo di cenacolo, con esso li chiavistelli,	23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
24 di dietro per la porta della casa sì uscì. Ed entrando dentro li servi del re, viddero serrate le porte (del luogo) dello cenacolo (dove erano), e dissono: forse che il re si purga il ventre dentro nel luogo dove dorme la state.	24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'
25 E aspettando uno buono pezzo, tanto che se ne vergognavano, e veggendo che niuno venne ad aprire, tolsono le chiavi; e aprendo trovarono il loro signore, che istava in terra ed era morto.	25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.
26 E turbandosi (e facendo rumore) tra loro, Aod in quel mezzo si fuggì; e passò oltre il luogo dove stavano gl' idoli, donde prima era passato; e venne in Seirat.	26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.
27 E immantenente fece (sonare e) dare alle trombe su nel monte di Efraim; e vennero giuso con lui i figliuoli d' Israel, andando egli sempre dinanzi.	27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.
28 Il quale sì disse loro: seguitàtemi, imperò che Iddio ha dato nelle nostre mani i nostri nemici, cioè (sono) i Moabiti. E andarono giuso dietro a lui, e prèsono tutti i passi del secco del (fiume) Giordano che riescono (e menano) in Moab, e non lasciarono passare persona niuna.	28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.
29 Ma uccisono de' Moabiti, in quello tempo nel torno di dieci milia uomini, tutti quanti uomini robusti e forti; e niuno di loro non poteo iscampare.	29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.
30 E fue umiliato Moab in quello die dalla mano de' figliuoli d' Israel; e riposossi la terra in pace LXXX anni (da guerre).	30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.
31 E morto Aod, si fue e venne dopo lui Samgar figliuolo di Anat, il quale percosse de' Filistei uomini cinquecento con uno gomero (di arare la terra); e in questo modo egli difese i figliuoli d' Israel.	31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.
