1 Riguardando Paulo (tutti quelli ch' erano congregati contra a lui) in quello concilio, sì disse: (signori e) fratelli, con ogni buona conscienzia sono conversato dinanzi a Dio insino al dì d'oggi.	1 Paul looked intently at the Sanhedrin and said, "My brothers, I have conducted myself with a perfectly clear conscience before God to this day."
2 Dalla quale parola il principe delli sacerdoti, che aveva nome Anania, sdegnato comandò a quelli che li stavano dintorno, che li dessero nella bocca.	2 The high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike his mouth.
3 E (così quelli facendo) Paulo disse al principe delli sacerdoti: Dio ti percoterà, parete sbianchizzata; però che sedendo tu come giudice secondo la legge, mi fai ingiustamente percuotere	3 Then Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall. Do you indeed sit in judgment upon me according to the law and yet in violation of the law order me to be struck?"
4 E (riprendendolo) quelli che stavano dintorno (al principe delli sacerdoti) dicevano: or come? maledici il sommo sacerdote di Dio?	4 The attendants said, "Would you revile God's high priest?"
5 Paulo rispose: io non sapeva, fratelli miei, ch' fusse principe de' sacerdoti; per ciò ( ch' io so) ch' è scritto, (e comandamento è che dice): non maledicere il principe del popolo.	5 Paul answered, "Brothers, I did not realize he was the high priest. For it is written, 'You shall not curse a ruler of your people.'"
6 E poi (avendosi escusato, e) considerando Paulo, che di quelli ch' erano quivi raunati, parte erano Farisei (li quali credevano la resurrezione), e parte Saducei (li quali non la credevano, volendo mettere tra loro discordia), gridò nel concilio e disse: sappiate, (padri e) fratelli miei, che io sono Fariseo e figliuolo di Fariseo; e perchè io predico la resurrezione di morte (e la speranza dell' altra vita), sono così giudicato.	6 Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; (I) am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead."
7 Per la quale parola incontanente fu discordia fra Saducei e Farisei; e così si partì il concilio (in discordia).	7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the group became divided.
8 Per che li Saducei dicevano che non era resurrezione, nè angelo nè spirito; e li Farisei (dicevano e tengono tutto il contrario, cioè) confessano l'uno e l'altro.	8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all three.
9 Onde levandosi tra loro grande rumore, alcuni de' Farisei si levarono per difender Paulo, e dissero: noi non troviamo contra questo uomo nissuna colpa; e che appartiene a noi, se il spirito gli parlò, o alcuno angelo?	9 A great uproar occurred, and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party stood up and sharply argued, "We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?"
10 E vedendo il tribuno questa discordia (e sentendo questo rumore), fece trarre Paulo di mezzo di loro, temendo che non lo tollessero, e fecelo mettere in certa guardia da' suoi masnadieri.	10 The dispute was so serious that the commander, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, ordered his troops to go down and rescue him from their midst and take him into the compound.
11 E (stando così Paulo in questa custodia) il Signore gli apparve la seguente notte (e confortollo) e disse: si costante (e fermo, e sappi) che sì come hai renduta testimonianza di me in Ierusalem così è bisogno che facci in Roma.	11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome."
12 E come fu giorno (temendo) certi iudei (che il tribuno non il liberasse) imaginaronsi pur d' ucciderlo, e fecero voto di non mangiare nè bere insino a tanto che non l' uccidessero.	12 When day came, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
13 E furono ben quaranta.	13 There were more than forty who formed this conspiracy.
14 Li quali andorono al principe delli sacerdoti e a' seniori, e dissono loro come s' aveano votati e avevano (promesso e) fermato di non mangiare e non bere, insine che non uccidessero Paulo.	14 They went to the chief priests and elders and said, "We have bound ourselves by a solemn oath to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
15 E (poi li consigliorono e) dissero: mandate al tribuno, che nel mandi sotto specie d' avere a ragionare con lui, e di terminare certe questioni, e nci staremo apparecchiati nella via, e uccideremolo.	15 You, together with the Sanhedrin, must now make an official request to the commander to have him bring him down to you, as though you meant to investigate his case more thoroughly. We on our part are prepared to kill him before he arrives."
16 Le quali parole udendo uno figliuolo d' una sorella di Paulo, incontanente gli venne ad annunziare.	16 The son of Paul's sister, however, heard about the ambush; so he went and entered the compound and reported it to Paul.
17 Onde Paulo chiamando a sè uno Centurione, (di quelli che il guardavano), pregollo ch' egli menasse quello suo nepote al tribuno, perciò che gli voleva parlare in secreto.	17 Paul then called one of the centurions and requested, "Take this young man to the commander; he has something to report to him."
18 E quello così fece; e giungendo con lui al tribuno, e dicendo come Paulo l' avea pregato che li menasse quello giovine, per ch' egli avea a parlarli in secreto,	18 So he took him and brought him to the commander and explained, "The prisoner Paul called me and asked that I bring this young man to you; he has something to say to you."
19 il tribuno prese incontanente quello giovine, e trasselo in disparte, e domandò di quello che dire voleva.	19 The commander took him by the hand, drew him aside, and asked him privately, "What is it you have to report to me?"
20 E quello allora gli disse: sappi che certi iudei (hanno fatto consiglio d' uccidere Paulo, e) domani ti verranno a pregare che tu il mandi a loro, sotto specie d' avere a ragionare e determinare con lui certe questioni.	20 He replied, "The Jews have conspired to ask you to bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomor row, as though they meant to inquire about him more thoroughly,
21 (Onde sii savio, e) non il concedere a loro; per ciò che ben quaranta uomini stanno apparecchiati nella via per ucciderlo, e hanno fatto voto di non mangiare nè bere insino a tanto che non l'uccidano; e aspettano pure che tu il mandi.	21 but do not believe them. More than forty of them are lying in wait for him; they have bound themselves by oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are now ready and only wait for your consent."
22 Allora il tribuno mandò via quello giovinetto, e comandogli che ad altrui non dicesse che a lui sopra ciò parlato avesse.	22 As the commander dismissed the young man he directed him, "Tell no one that you gave me this information."
23 E (incontanente) chiamando due Centurioni, comandò loro e disse: apparecchiate (e fate armare) LXX uomini a cavallo, e ducento a piedi, e altrettanti a lancie, e in su la terza ora della notte	23 Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, "Get two hundred soldiers ready to go to Caesarea by nine o'clock tonight, along with seventy horsemen and two hundred auxiliaries.
24 prendete Paulo, e mettetelo a cavallo, sì che sano e salvo il meniate (e presentiate in Cesarea) a Felice preside.	24 Provide mounts for Paul to ride and give him safe conduct to Felix the governor."
25 E questo disse, per che temeva che Paulo da' giudei non li fosse tolto e morto, onde egli poi n' avesse alcuno pregiudicio dall' imperatore.	25 Then he wrote a letter with this content:
26 E (mandandolo per lo predetto modo) scrisse una lettera (al predetto Felice sopra la detta materia) in tale forma: Claudio Lisia all'ottimo preside Felice salute.	26 "Claudius Lysias to his excellency the governor Felix, greetings.
27 Mando a te questo uomo, il quale li iudei avevano preso, e volevanlo uccidere; onde io sopravenendo con li miei armati, il trassi loro di mano, (massimamente) perchè (egli dice ch' ) egli è romano.	27 This man, seized by the Jews and about to be murdered by them, I rescued after intervening with my troops when I learned that he was a Roman citizen.
28 E volendo sapere la cagione per che li iudei l'avevano così preso (e volevanlo uccidere a furore),	28 I wanted to learn the reason for their accusations against him so I brought him down to their Sanhedrin.
29 non trovai se non ch' elli fa contra a certe loro leggi; ma io per me non gli trovo colpa, per la quale sia degno di morte, nè pur di pregione.	29 I discovered that he was accused in matters of controversial questions of their law and not of any charge deserving death or imprisonment.
30 Onde essendomi detto, che li iudei intendevano di tormelo e ucciderlo, e sapendo che a ciò avevano poste le insidie, io l'ho (con buona guardia) mandato a te, e ho pronunziato a' suoi accusatori, che a te vengano se vogliono accusare.	30 Since it was brought to my attention that there will be a plot against the man, I am sending him to you at once, and have also notified his accusers to state (their case) against him before you."
31 E prendendo la masnada la predetta lettera, occultamente di notte si partirono.	31 So the soldiers, according to their orders, took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.
32 E poi il seguente dì.	32 The next day they re turned to the compound, leaving the horsemen to complete the journey with him.
33 vennero in Cesarea, e presentaronlo dinanzi a Felice preside, e presentarongli la predetta lettera.	33 When they arrived in Caesarea they delivered the letter to the governor and presented Paul to him.
34 La quale egli leggendo, dimandò Paulo di quale provincia (e contrada) fusse; e rispondendo Paulo, ch' elli era (nato di Tarso) di Cilicia,	34 When he had read it and asked to what province he belonged, and learned that he was from Cilicia,
35 Felice li disse: io ti darò audienza, quando saranno venuti li tuoi accusatori. E poi in questo mezzo il fece guardare in quello palazzo che fu di Erode.	35 he said, "I shall hear your case when your accusers arrive." Then he ordered that he be held in custody in Herod's praetorium.
