1 Era uno uomo della gente de' Farisei, che avea nome Nicodemo, il quale era principe de' giudei.	1 And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 Questo venne una notte a Iesù, e dissegli : maestro, noi sappiamo che tu sei venuta da Dio; imperò che niuno non potrebbe fare gli segni che tu fai, se Iddio non fosse con lui.	2 This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him.
3 Rispose Iesù e disse: in verità, in verità ti dico, che chiunque non rinascerà un'altra volta, non potrà vedere il regno di Dio.	3 Jesus answered, and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Disse Nicodemo: come puote l'uomo rinascere, quando è vecchio? come puote egli entrare un'altra volta nel ventre della madre, e poi rinascere?	4 Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born again?
5 Rispose Iesù (e disse): in verità, ti dico, che chi non rinascerà per acqua e Spirito Santo, non potrà entrare nel regno di Dio.	5 Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 Quel ch' è nato di carne, è carne; e quel ch' è nato di spirito, è spirito.	6 That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit.
7 E non ti maravigliare, se io ti dico che vi convenga rinascere un' altra volta.	7 Wonder not, that I said to thee, you must be born again.
8 Onde i spirito dovunque vuole spira; e la voce sua odi, ma tu non sai donde sì venga, o dove sì vada; così è ciascheduno ch' è nato di spirito.	8 The Spirit breatheth where he will; and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Rispose Nicodemo, e disse: come si possono fare queste cose?	9 Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be done?
10 Rispose Iesù, e disse: tu sei maestro in Israel, e non sai queste cose?	10 Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 In verità, in verità ti dico, che quello che noi sappiamo, parliamo; e quello che vediamo, testimoniamo; e non pigliate la nostra testimonianza.	11 Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony.
12 E s' io vi dico delle cose terrene, non le credete; come adunque, se io vi dico delle celestiali, voi le crederete?	12 If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things?
13 E niuno sale in cielo, se non colui ch' è disceso di cielo, il Figliuolo dell' uomo, il quale è in cielo.	13 And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.
14 E sì come Moisè esaltò il serpente nel deserto, così è di bisogno che sia esaltato il Figliuolo dell' uomo,	14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 sì che chiunque crede in lui, non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna.	15 That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting.
16 Tanto amò Iddio il mondo, che gli dètte il suo unigenito Figliuolo; acciò che ogni uomo che crede in lui, non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna.	16 For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.
17 Iddio non mandò il suo Figliuolo nel mondo per giudicarlo, ma (per salvarlo) acciò che il mondo sia fatto salvo per lui.	17 For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him.
18 E quello il quale crederà in lui, non sarà giudicato; ma quello che non crederà, è già giudicato; imperò che non crede nell' unigenito Figliuolo di Dio.	18 He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 E questo è il giudicio; imperò che la luce venne nel mondo, e li uomini hanno più amato le tenebre, che la luce; imperò che l' opere loro erano ree.	19 And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil.
20 Imperò che ogni uomo, che adopera male, ha in odio la luce, e non viene alla luce, acciò che le opere sue non siano riprese.	20 For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.
21 Ma colui che adopera la verità, viene alla luce, acciò che le opere sue siano manifeste; imperò che sono fatte in Iddio.	21 But he that doth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God.
22 Dopo queste cose venne Iesù con li suoi discepoli nella terra di Iudea; e quivi con loro dimorava, e battezzava.	22 After these things Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea: and there he abode with them, and baptized.
23 Ed eravi etiam Ioanne, battezzante in Ennon appresso Salim; imperò che in quello luogo erano molte acque; e venivano, e battezzavansi.	23 And John also was baptizing in Ennon near Salim; because there was much water there; and they came and were baptized.
24 Ancora non s' era posto Ioanne in pregione.	24 For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 Onde fatta fu una questione, tra gli discepoli di Ioanne e gli Iudei, della purificazione.	25 And there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews concerning purification:
26 Li quali vennero a Ioanne, e disserongli: maestro, quello ch' era teco oltre il Giordano, al quale rendesti testimonianza, ecco, egli quivi battezza, e tutti vengono a lui.	26 And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou gavest testimony, behold he baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 Rispose Ioanne, e disse: non puote l'uomo togliere alcuna cosa, (se prima) non [gli] sia data dal cielo.	27 John answered, and said: A man cannot receive any thing, unless it be given him from heaven.
28 Voi stessi mi rendete testimonianza, ch' io vi ho detto: io non sono Cristo, ma come io sono mandato inanzi a lui.	28 You yourselves do bear me witness, that I said, I am not Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 Quello che ha la sposa, [sì è lo sposo]; ma lo amico, che sta e odelo, rallegrasi di gaudio per l'amore della voce del sposo. Questo adunque mio gaudio, egli è adempiuto.	29 He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with joy because of the bridegroom's voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 Quello bisogna accrescere, e a me bisogna sminuire.	30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 Quello ch' è venuto di sopra, egli è sopra tutti. Quello ch' è di terra, egli è di terra, e di terra parla. Quello ch' è venuto dal cielo, è sopra tutti.	31 He that cometh from above, is above all. He that is of the earth, of the earth he is, and of the earth he speaketh. He that cometh from heaven, is above all.
32 Ed egli testifica quello che ha veduto e udito; e nullo accetta il suo testimonio.	32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth: and no man receiveth his testimony.
33 Ma colui che accetta il suo testimonio, l' ha segnato, imperò che Iddio è verace.	33 He that hath received his testimony, hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 Quello che Iddio ha mandato, parla le parole di Dio; certo Iddio non dà il spirito a misura.	34 For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: for God doth not give the Spirit by measure.
35 Il Padre ama il Figliuolo, e hagli dato ogni cosa nella sua mano.	35 The Father loveth the Son: and he hath given all things into his hand.
36 Colui che crede nel Figliuolo, ha vita eterna; ma quello ch' è incredulo al Figliuolo, egli non vederà la vita, ma sopra lui permanerà l'ira [di Dio].	36 He that believeth in the Son, hath life everlasting; but he that believeth not the Son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
