BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Partironsi, e puosero le loro abitazioni nelli piani di Moab, ove [ al di là ] del Giordano è posta Gerico.	1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.
2 Vedendo Balac, figliuolo di Sefor, ciò che avea fatto il popolo d'Israel all’Amorreo;	2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,
3 e (come) i Moabiti lo avesser temuto, e (col suo aiuto) non si potesse da lui difendere;	3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;
4 disse a tutti i savi di Madian: così ci farà questo popolo a noi, e ucciderà tutti i nostri contadini, come suole lo bue mangiare l'erbe insino alle radici. Egli era re in quello tempo in Moab.	4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.
5 Mandò dunque i messi a Balaam figliuolo di Beor, divinatore, il quale abitava sopra lo fiume delle terre de' figliuoli d'Ammon, acciò che lo chiamassero, e dicessergli: egli è uscito uno popolo d'Egitto, il quale copre tutta la terra, e vennero presso a me.	5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.
6 Vieni, e maledici questo popolo, il quale è più forte di me, sì ch' io lo possa percuotere e cacciare delle terre mie. Io so bene, che colui il quale tu benedirai sarà benedetto, e colui il quale tu maledicerai sarà maledetto.	6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'
7 Andarono i savii di Moab, e gli antichi di Madian, avendo lo prezzo della indovinazione con loro. E venendo a Balaam, dissergli ogni cosa che Balac avea detto.	7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.
8 Ed egli rispuose loro: istate qui istanotte, e io vi risponderò ciò che Dio mi dirà. E istando coloro con Balaam, venne Iddio, e dissegli:	8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.
9 Che voglion questi uomini da te?	9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'
10 Ed egli rispuose: Balac figliuolo di Sefor, re de' Moabiti, mandò a me, dicendo:	10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,
11 Ecco il popolo che è uscito d'Egitto, e copre tutta la terra; e imperciò vieni e maledicilo, si e per tale modo ch' io possa pugnare contro a lui, e cacciarlo della terra mia.	11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '
12 E Iddio disse a Balaam: non andare con loro, e non maledire il popolo, imperò ch' egli è benedetto.	12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'
13 Ed egli, levato la mattiua, disse agli ambasciatori: andate nella terra vostra, perciò che Iddio m’hae comandato ch' io non vegna con voi.	13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'
14 E tornarono gli ambasciatori, e dissero a Balac: non volle Balaam venire con noi.	14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'
15 Ed egli da capo vi mandò più e migliori e potenti uomini, che non avea mandato in prima.	15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.
16 E giugnendo a Balaam, sì gli dissero: questo ti dice Balac, figliuolo di Sefor: non temere di venire a me;	16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.
17 però ch' io sono apparecchiato di meritarti bene, e ciò che chiederai io ti darò; vieni e male dici questo popolo.	17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'
18 Rispuose Balaam: se Balac mi desse la casa sua, piena d'oro e d'ariento, io non potrei mutare la parola di Dio, ch' io dicessi meno o più.	18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .
19 E pregovi che istiate quivi istanotte, acciò ch' io possa sapere da capo quello che Iddio mi risponde.	19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'
20 Venne Iddio a Balaam in quella notte, e dissegli: se questi uomini ti sono venuti a chiamare, lièvati e va con loro; e non di meno guarda che non faccia se non quello ch' io ti dirò.	20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'
21 Levossi Balaam la mattina; e presa l'asina sua, andava con loro.	21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.
22 Onde intervenne che Iddio s'adirò con lui. E puosesi l'angelo di Dio contro a Balaam nella via; il quale sedeva in su l'asina, e avea due fanciulli con lui.	22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.
23 E vedendo l'asina l'angelo di Dio istare nella via, col coltello ignudo in mano, sì si cessò della via dove andava, e incominciò ad andare per lo campo. Vedendo Balaam questo (che l'asina faceva), sì le dava e battevala, volendola reducere alla via.	23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.
24 E puosesi l'angelo, nel mezzo della via, infra due siepi di vigna.	24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.
25 E vedendolo, l'asina sì s'accostò all'uno muro della vigna, sì che Balaam percosse il piede al muro; e sempre quegli la batteva.	25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.
26 E sempre l'angelo istava al luogo istretto, dove l'asina non poteva andare da alcuna parte.	26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.
27 E vedendo l'asina pure istare fermo l'angelo, cadde sotto a Balaam; ed egli irato sì la batteva fortemente con un bastone a' fianchi.	27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.
28 Aperse Iddio la bocca dell' asina; e sì parlò, e disse: che ? hoe fatto, che tu m' hai oggi tre volte tanto battuta?	28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'
29 Rispuose Balaam: però che tu l'hai meritato, chè tu fai beffe di me; se io avessi uno coltello, io ti ucciderei.	29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'
30 Risponde l'asina: non sono io lo tuo animale, sopra il quale tu sei uso di sedere insino al di d'oggi? dimmi: fèciti io mai più questo? Rispuose Balaam; non giammai.	30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.
31 E in quello punto aperse Iddio gli occhii a Balaam; e vidde l'angelo il quale istava nella via col coltello ignudo in mano, e (Balaam) si gittò in terra, e adorollo.	31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.
32 E l'angelo gli disse: perchè hai tu battuto tanto l'asina tua per tre volte? Io venni a pormiti incontro nella via, perciò che la tua via è ria, e a me sì è contraria.	32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.
33 E se l'asina tua non si fosse levata della via, io t'avria morto, e l'asina si sarebbe rimasa viva.	33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'
34 Disse Balaam: io ho peccato, non sapendo che tu istessi contro a me; e imperciò, se ti di spiace ch' io vada, io mi ritornerò.	34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'
35 E l'angelo gli disse: va con questi, ma guarda che tu non parli alcuna cosa, se non quello ch' io ti dirò. E allora andò con quelli ambassadori.	35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.
36 Udendo Balac che venisse Balaam, andogli incontro nello castello de' Moabiti, il quale si è nei confini di Arnon.	36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.
37 E (allora) disse a Balaam: io mandai messi che ti comandassero; perchè non venisti tu a me incontanente? avevi tu paura, ch' io non ti meritassi della tua fatica?	37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'
38 Ed egli rispuose: io (sono venuto, e) sono nella tua presenza; nè non credere tu, ch' io possa parlare, se non quello che Iddio m'imporrà nella bocca,	38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'
39 Andarono insieme; e vennero in una cittade, la quale è ne' confini delle terre sue.	39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.
40 E avendo ucciso Balac buoi e pecore assai, mandolle a Balaam, e alli principi ch' erano con lui, e mandò danari.	40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.
41 Fatta la mattina, sì il meno nel luogo in alto di Baal, e mostrògli una parte del popolo d'Israel.	41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.
