1 Chi toccherae la pece si sozzerae da essa; e chi comunicherae collo superbo si vestirae di superbia.	1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.
2 Peso si leva adosso quello che comunica con più onesto di sè. Non sarai compagno con più ricco di te.	2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:
3 Che comunicherae il laveggio colla pentola? (però che) quando si stropiccieranno insieme, si romperanno.	3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.
4 Il ricco ingiustamente operoe, e fremerae; e lo povero offeso tacerae.	4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.
5 Se tu gli donerae, torrassi te; e se tu non avrai che dare, abbandonerà te.	5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;
6 Se tu averai, mangerà teco e [ti] vuoterà de' tuoi beni; e non si dorrà de' tuoi danni.	6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.
7 Se tu li sarai necessario, supplanterà te, e sorridendosi ti darae speranza, narrandoti i suoi beni, e dirae: che hai tu bisogno?	7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.
8 E confonderatti nelli cibi suoi, infino a tanto che tu l'aiuti, infino a due o tre volte; e alla perfine si farae beffe di te, e poi vedendoti t' abbandonerae, e scorlerae il capo suo verso di te.	8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.
9 Umìliati a Dio, e aspetta l' adiutorio suo.	9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.
10 E guarda che tu ingannato non ti avvilisci in pazzia.	10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.
11 Non essere umile nella sapienza tua, acciò che tu umiliato [non] sia condutto nella stoltezza.	11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.
12 Chiamato da più potente di te, pàrtiti; però che questo più ti chiamerae a sè.	12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.
13 Non essere importuno, e non essere sospinto; non si di lungi da lui, sì che ti dimentichi.	13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.
14 Non ritenere ugualmente con lui parlamento; non credere a molte parole di colui; però che di molto parlare egli ti tenterae, e sorridendoti domanderae delli tuoi secreti.	14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.
15 Il fiero animo di colui serberae le tue parole; e non ti risparmierae di domandare come tu facesti nella guerra, e come nella prigione.	15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.
16 Guàrdati, e attendi diligentemente a quello che tu udirai; però che tu vai colla tua sovversione.	16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.
17 Udendo tu quelle parole, sì come senza sonno attendi, e veglierai.	17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?
18 In tutta la vita tua ama Iddio, e invocalo in (ogni) tuo adiutorio.	18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.
19 Ciascuno animale ama suo simile; e così ogni uomo ama (eguali e) prossimali a sè.	19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.
20 Ogni carne si congiugnerae a simile di sè, e ogni uomo s' accompagnerae a suo simile.	20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.
21 Il lupo s' accompagnerae collo agnello alcune volte; così s' accompagnerae il peccatore col giusto.	21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.
22 Che compagnia è quella del santo uomo col cattivo? Che buona parte è dal ricco al povero?	22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.
23 L'asino selvatico sì è caccia dello leone nel bosco; e così li poveri sono pastura delli ricchi.	23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.
24 E sì come la umilitade è una abbominazione al superbo, così è il povero una maledizione al ricco.	24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.
25 Il ricco commosso (e adirato) è aggrandito dalli suoi amici; lo umile, quando cade, è cacciato eziandio da' suoi conoscenti.	25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.
26 Molti sono gli aiutatori al ricco, quando egli è ingannato; egli favelloe superbamente, e dissono ch' elli aveva ragione.
27 Lo umile è ingannato, e oltre il danno è ripreso; parlò saviamente, e non fu ascoltato.
28 Lo ricco parlò, e tutti tacerono; e alzarono la parola sua infino a' nuvoli.
29 Il povero parlò, e dicono: chi è costui? e se elli offenderà, sovvertono colui.
30 Buona è la ricchezza, alla quale non è peccato nella coscienza; e la povertà è malvagissima nella bocca dello cattivo uomo.
31 Il cuore dell' uomo cambia la faccia di colui, in bene o sia in male.
32 Malagevolmente e con fatica troverai vestigio di buono cuore e buono viso.
