1 Intanto Gorgia elesse V milia pedoni, e mille cavalieri; e partironsi la notte dal campo loro,	1 Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;
2 per percuotere subitamente alla gente di Giuda; ed erano quivi alquanti di quelli che guardavano la rocca, che gli guidavano.	2 To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.
3 E quando Giuda il sentìo, incontanente si partio insieme colli suoi migliori combattitori, e si propose d'assalire l'oste del re ch' era rimasa in Emmaum.	3 Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king's army which was at Emmaus,
4 Imperciò che l'oste era ancora isparta per li campi.	4 While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.
5 Gorgia venne di notte (per tempo) nel campo di Giuda; e non trovandoli, sì li andava cercando sopra li monti, dicendo: questi or dove è? questi si fuggie.	5 In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us
6 E quando il dì si fece, Giuda sì apparve nel campo (dell' oste del re) solamente con tremilia uomini; e quegli erano male armati.	6 But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.
7 E così, giunti al campo de' nemici, viddono li suoi cavalieri valenti e armati colle loriche (cicè panziere), ed erano insegnati e savi di guerra.	7 And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.
8 Disse allora Giuda agli uomini ch' erano con lui: non vi spaventate per la loro (grande) moltitudine, e non abbiate paura del loro assalimento.	8 Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.
9 Ricordivi come i nostri padri furono fatti salvi nel mare rosso, perseguitandogli Faraoue con grande oste; (divennono poi liberi).	9 Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.
10 Adunque preghiamo Iddio del cielo, e averà di noi misericordia, e ricorderassi del testamento dei padri nostri, e in questo di sconfiggerà questo (grande) esercito dinanzi da noi.	10 Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:
11 E sapranno tutte le genti, che vero è che Iddio libera il suo popolo d'Israel.	11 That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.
12 E quando quella gente strana gli viddono venire contro a loro,	12 Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.
13 uscirono fuori del campo, e schieraronsi insieme; e allora sonarono le trombe di Giuda.	13 Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.
14 E vennero a battaglia (grandissima); e furono sconfitte le genti strane, e fuggironsi del campo.	14 So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.
15 E gli altri furono morti colle coltella, e cacciarongli infino a Gezeron nelle ville d' Idumea e di Azoto e di Iamnia; e furono morti de' nemici infino. intorno di tremilia uomini.	15 Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.
16 E subitamente ritornò Giuda colla sua oste.	16 This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,
17 Ammonendo, disse al popolo: non siate troppo desiderosi della preda (e delle spoglie), però che ancora ci avanza battaglia.	17 And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,
18 Però che Gorgia e la sua oste sì è nel monte presso a noi; e però state attenti contro a' nostri nimici, e sconfiggetegli, e poi prenderete le spoglie loro.	18 And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.
19 E mentre ch' egli parlava, ecco venire una parte di loro, che (con Gorgia) ragguardavano il campo da monte; (e Giuda colla gente sua percosse loro, e sconfissegli; poi percosse al campo di Gorgia e affocollo).	19 As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:
20 E Gorgia vidde che gli suoi erano scacciati, e che il campo era affocato; chè il fumo, che si vedeva, li manifestava quello che fatto era.	20 Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:
21 Onde veduto il loro danno, temettero molto; e riguardando videro che Giuda e gli suoi aspettavano, ed erano fermi nel campo, attendendo alla battaglia.	21 When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,
22 Donde loro si fuggirono tutti nel campo dei (loro) forestieri.	22 They fled every one into the land of strangers.
23 E allora Giuda venne nel campo degli sconfitti, e acquistò elli e li suoi molto oro e argento, vestimenta di celestro e di rosato, e molte grandi ricchezze.	23 Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.
24 E ritornando a casa loro, cantavano laude, e benedicevano Iddio del cielo, imperciò ch' egli è tutto buono, e la sua misericordia dura in perpetuo.	24 After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.
25 E (per questo modo) il popolo Giudeo ricevette in quello di grande (vittoria con) salute.	25 Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.
26 E la gente forestiera, che campòe, dissono a Lisia quello ch' era intravenuto.	26 Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:
27 Le quali cose poi che le intese, pieno d' ira veniva meno nel suo animo; imperò che non era avvenuto com' egli desiderava verso il popolo d' Israel, nè sì come lo re avea comandato.	27 Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.
28 E l'anno seguente radunò Lisia LX milia uomini a piedi, tutti scelti, e V milia cavalieri, per isconfiggere la gente di Giuda Maccabeo.	28 The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.
29 E vennero in Giudea, e puosono il campo in Betoron; e Giuda (Maccabeo) venne loro incontro con X milia uomini.	29 So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.
30 E quando loro ebbono veduta la potente oste de' nemici, Giuda incominciò a pregare Iddio, e disse: o salvatore d' Israel, tu se' benedetto, il quale abbattesti (la grave superbia e) l'impeto delï' uomo potente nelle mani di David tuo servo, e sconfiggesti il campo della strana gente per le mani di Ionata, figliuolo di Saul, e del suo armigero (donzello).	30 And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;
31 Adunque (benigno Signore) confondi l'oste de' nemici nelle mani del popolo tuo Israel, sì che loro sieno confusi nella loro potenza e cavalieri.	31 Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:
32 Dona loro paura, e invilisci la loro arditanza e la loro virtude; che per lo loro ishigottimento.	32 Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:
33 Colla spada de' tuoi servidori sieno dispersi, acciò che tu sia laudato negli inni da tutti quelli che conoscono il tuo nome.	33 Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.
34 E allora incominciò contro a loro la battaglia; e furono morti V milia di quelli di Lisia (e gli altri sconfitti).	34 So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.
35 E quando Lisia vidde la fuga di sua gente, e lo grande ardire della gente giudea, i quali si manifestavano (nelle loro grandi prodezze) di volere o vivere o morire valentemente combattendo, egli (per questo ispaventato) si fuggì ad Antiochia; e da capo elesse cavalieri, acciò che cresciuta l'oste sua venisse un' altra volta in Giudea.	35 Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas' soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.
36 Ma Giuda e li suoi fratelli dissono (intra loro): da poi che gli nimici nostri sono attritati e sconfitti, andiamo a nettare e rinnovare li santi luoghi e le sante cose.	36 Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.
37 E così si radunòe tutta la oste, e salirono nel monte di Sion.	37 Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.
38 E quando loro ebbono veduta la santificazione diserta, e l'altare contaminato, e le porte arse e l'erbe nate per li portichi come nascono per li monti e per le campagne, e le cellette sante (cioè le sacrestie) rovinate;	38 And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests' chambers pulled down;
39 loro allora si stracciarono le loro vestimenta, e piansono con grande pianto, e puosono sopra il capo loro cenere.	39 They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,
40 E caddono in terra sopra la faccia loro, e suonarono le trombe de' segni, e ad alta voce chiamarono Iddio del cielo (e d' Israel).	40 And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.
41 Allora ordinò Giuda certi uomini (battaglieri) per combattere (e per vincere) li nimici ch' erano nella ròcca, infino a tanto che loro purificassono le cose sante.	41 Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.
42 Ed elesse sacerdoti sanza macchia, volontarosi nella legge di Dio.	42 So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:
43 E nettarono li santuarii, e portarono le pietre della contaminazione in luogo non netto.	43 Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.
44 E pensò dell' altare de' sacrificii, il quale era contaminato, quello che fare ne doveano.	44 And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;
45 E vennegli preso buono consiglio di distruggerlo, acciò che non fosse loro in vituperio; imperò che le genti strane l' aveano contaminato e corrotto	45 They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,
46 E ripuosono le pietre nel monte della casa in luogo onesto, infino a tanto che venisse profeta che rispondesse delle dette cose.	46 And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.
47 E presono pietre intere, secondo la legge; ed edificarono uno altare nuovo, secondo quello di prima.	47 Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;
48 Ed edificarono li santuarii, e quelle cose ch' erano tra la casa dentro; e la magione santificarono e i portici.	48 And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.
49 E i santi vasi feciono nuovi, e portarono (e misono) nel tempio di Dio il candeliere, e l'altare degl' incensi e la mensa.	49 They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.
50 E puosono incenso sopra l'altare, e accesono le lucerne ch' erano sopra il candeliere, acciò che lucessono nel tempio.	50 And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.
51 E puosono li pani sopra la mensa, e appenderono li veli, e compierono tutte le opere che fatte aveano.	51 Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.
52 E (fatte queste cose e) si levarono suso nelli CXLVIII anni (del regno de' Greci) a dì XXV del nono mese, il quale li Giudei chiamano Casleu (cioè decembre) dinanzi al mattutino.	52 Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,
53 E offersono (li sacerdoti) sacrificio (cioè a Dio), secondo la legge, sopra l'altare nuovo de' sacrificii, il quale feciono.	53 And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.
54 Secondo il tempo e secondo il dì, il quale la pagana gente il contaminò, in quel die fue rinnovato (il detto altare) a suono d' istromento, e di canto e di citare e di cimbali.	54 Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.
55 E tutto il popolo cadde in terra sopra la sua faccia, e adorarono (Iddio) e benedissono Iddio. del cielo, che gli avea fatti vittoriosi.	55 Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.
56 E festeggiarono VIII dì per la sacrazione dello altare, e con allegrezza offersono ostie, e salutazione di laude.	56 And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.
57 E ornarono la faccia del tempio con corone d'oro e scudicciuoli; ed edificarono le porte e gli antiporti, e sì vi puosono le porte.	57 They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.
58 E grandissima letizia (e gioia) abbondò nel popolo, e cessò il vituperio delle genti.	58 Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.
59 Adunque Giuda e li suoi fratelli e tutti quelli della chiesa della gente giudea ordinarono che ogni anno a' XXV del mese di Casleu si facesse festa VIII di per la sagra dell' altare con gioia e con allegrezza.	59 Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.
60 Ed edificarono in quel tempo il monte di Sion, e dintorno vi feciono alte mura e forti torri, acciò che le genti strane, quando venissono, non lo occupassono, come aveano fatto prima.	60 At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.
61 E puosevi Giuda le sue genti d'arme a guardia, (e fornillo) e armollo per guardar Betsura, acciò che il popolo avesse defensione contro alla faccia di Idumea.	61 And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.
