BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Da poscia ch' egli udì le parole de' figliuoli di Laban, dicendo: Iacob se n'ha portato ogni cosa che fue del padre nostro, e di quelle facultadi è ar ricchito maravigliosamente;	1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, 'Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father;it is at our father's expense that he has acquired al this wealth,'
2 in verità si pensò in l'animo suo, che la faccia di Laban non era contra sè, siccome ieri e il terzo dì;	2 and Jacob also saw that Laban's manner towards him was not as it had been in the past.
3 e massimamente dicendo a lui il Signore: ri torna nella terra del padre tuo e alla generazione tua; ed io sarò teco.	3 Yahweh said to Jacob, 'Go back to the land of your ancestors, where you were born, and I shal bewith you.'
4 Mandò e chiamò Rachel e Lia nel campo dove pascea la greggia.	4 So Jacob had Rachel and Leah cal ed to the fields where his flocks were,
5 E disse a loro: io veggio la faccia del padre vostro, ch' ella non è contra di me, siccome ieri e nel terzo dì. In verità Iddio del padre mio fu con esso meco.	5 and he said to them, 'I can see that your father's manner towards me is not as it was in the past, butthe God of my father has been with me.
6 E lui hae conosciuto, che con tutte le forze mie io hoe servito lo padre vostro.	6 You yourselves know that I have worked for your father with al my might,
7 Ma il padre vostro venne contro di me, e mutò la mercede mia dieci volte; niente di meno non lasciò lui lo Dio mio, che nocesse a me.	7 and that your father has tricked me, changing my wages ten times over, and yet God has not al owedhim to harm me.
8 Se quando egli avea detto: varie saranno le mercedi tue, partorivano ogni pecora variati parti; quando per contrario disse: ciascuna cosa bianca torrai per la mercede, ogni greggia partorirono bianco.	8 Whenever he said, "The spotted ones will be your wages," all the animals produced spotted young;whenever he said, "The striped ones wil be your wages," al the animals produced striped young.
9 E tolse Iddio la sostanza del padre vostro, e diella a me.	9 Thus God has reclaimed your father's livestock and given it to me.
10 E poscia che il tempo del concepimento delle pecore era venuto, levai gli occhi miei; e viddi in sonno salire i maschi sopra le femine, variati e maculosi e di diversi colori.	10 Once, when the animals were on heat, I suddenly saw in a dream that the he-goats covering thefemales were striped or spotted or piebald.
11 E disse l'angelo del Signore a me in sonno: Iacob! Ed io risposi: io sono presente.	11 In the dream the angel of God cal ed to me, "Jacob!" I said, "Here I am."
12 Il quale disse: lieva gli occhi tuoi, e vedi tutti i maschi salienti sopra le femine, variati e di versi e maculosi; e viddi in verità tutto quello che ti ha fatto Laban.	12 He said, "Now take note: al the he-goats covering the females are striped or spotted or piebald -- forI too have noted all the things that Laban has been doing to you,
13 Io sono Dio di Betel, dove tu ungesti la pietra e facesti a me voto: ora adunque lieva suso, e partiti di questa terra, ritornante nella terra della tua nativitate.	13 I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, where you poured oil on a pillar and made a vow tome. On your feet, then, leave this country and return to the land of your birth." '
14 Rispuose Rachel e Lia: or non abbiamo noi alcuna cosa di rimagnente, nelle facultà ed eredità, nella casa del padre nostro?	14 In answer Rachel and Leah said to him, 'Are we stil likely to inherit anything from our father's estate?
15 Or non reputò egli noi, siccome (d'altrui ed) aliene, e vendecci e mangiò lo prezzo nostro?	15 Does he not think of us as outsiders now? For not only has he sold us, but he has completelyswal owed up the money he got for us.
16 Ma Iddio ha tolto le ricchezze del padre nostro, e a noi quelle hae dato e a' figliuoli nostri; donde ogni cosa, che ti comandò lo Signore, fae.	16 Al the wealth that God has reclaimed from our father belonged to us and our children in any case.So do whatever God has told you.'
17 Levossi adunque Jacob; e posti li figliuoli e le mogli sopra i cammelli, andossene.	17 Forthwith, Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,
18 E portonne ogni sustanzia e le greggie, ed ve ogni cosa che in Mesopotamia avea acquistato gnendo ad Isaac suo padre nella terra di Canaan.	18 and drove off all his livestock -- with al the possessions he had acquired, the livestock belonging tohim which he had acquired in Paddan-Aram -- to go to his father Isaac in Canaan.
19 In quello tempo Laban era ito a tondere le pecore; e Rachel furò li idoli del padre suo.	19 Laban was away, shearing his sheep; Rachel in the meanwhile had appropriated the household idolsbelonging to her father,
20 E nol volse manifestar Iacob allo suocero suo, che fuggisse.	20 and Jacob had outwitted Laban the Aramaean so that he would not be forewarned of his flight.
21 E conciosia cosa che se n'andasse, così egli come ogni cosa ch' era di sua ragione, e il fiume avesse passato, e andasse contra lo monte di Galaad,	21 Thus he got away with all he had. He was soon across the River and heading for Mount Gilead.
22 nunciato è a Laban, lo di terzo, che Iacob era fuggito.	22 Three days later Laban was told that Jacob had fled.
23 Il quale, tolti i fratelli suoi, perseguitoe sette dì; e comprese lui nel monte di Galaad.	23 Taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days and overtook him at Mount Gilead.
24 E vidde in sogno, dicendo a lui Iddio: guàr dati, che alcuna cosa aspera non favelli contra Iacob.	24 But God appeared to Laban the Aramaean in a dream that night and said to him, 'On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob.'
25 E Iacob avea isteso lo tabernacolo nel monte. Allora quegli, seguitando lui con suoi fratelli, in quello medesimo monte di Galaad puose lo tentorio.	25 Laban caught up with Jacob, who had pitched his tent in the hil s; and Laban pitched camp on MountGilead.
26 E disse a Iacob: perchè hai fatto queste cose, che di nascoso hai menato da me le figliuole mie, siccome prigioni degni di morte?	26 Laban said to Jacob, 'What do you mean by outwitting me and then carrying off my daughters likeprisoners of war?
27 Perchè volestù fuggire, ch' io non lo sapessi, e non me'l dicesti, acciò ch' io perseguitassi con allegrezza, e con cantici e timpani e ceteri?	27 Why did you flee in secret, stealing away without letting me know, so that I could send you on yourway rejoicing, with songs and the music of tambourines and harps?
28 Non hai voluto ch' io basci li figliuoli e le figliuole mie; scioccamente hae adoperato. Ed ora in verità	28 You did not even let me kiss my sons and daughters. You have behaved like a fool.
29 la mia mano puote rendere a te male; ma Iddio [ del] padre tuo ieri disse a me: guàrdati, che non favelli contra Iacob niuna cosa dura!	29 It is in my power to harm you, but the God of your father said to me last night, "On no account sayanything whatever to Jacob."
30 E se a' tuoi desideravi d'andare, e con desi derio era a te la casa del padre tuo, perchè m'hai furati gli dii miei?	30 Now it may be you real y went because you had such a longing for your father's house, but why didyou steal my gods?'
31 Rispuose Iacob: io soe perchè io mi sono partito da te, non lo sapendo tu; perchè temetti che per forza non mi tollesti le figliuole tue.	31 Jacob answered Laban, 'I was afraid, thinking you were going to snatch your daughters from me.
32 Ma di quello che tu mi reprendi di furto, appresso qualunque tu troverai gli dii tuoi, sia affogato innanzi agli fratelli suoi; cerca, se alcuna delle tue cose tu trovi appresso di me, tòla. Dicendo queste parole, non sapea che Rachel avea furato gl' idoli.	32 But whoever is found in possession of your gods shall not remain alive. In the presence of ourbrothers, examine for yourself what I have, and take what is yours.' Now Jacob did not know that Rachel hadappropriated them.
33 Ed entrato che fu Laban nel tabernacolo di Iacob e di Lia e di tutte due le serve, non li trovò; ed essendo entrato nel tentorio di Rachel,	33 Laban went into Jacob's tent, and then into Leah's tent and the tent of the two slave-girls, but hefound nothing. He came out of Leah's tent and went into Rachel's.
34 essa presta ascose gl'idoli sotto lo strame de' cammelli, e sedettevi suso; è cercato ogni tentorio, e nulla trovossi.	34 Now Rachel had taken the household idols and put them inside a camel cushion, and was sitting onthem. Laban went through everything in the tent but found nothing.
35 E disse: non si adiri lo signore mio, che innanzi a te non mi posso levare; imperciò che secondo la usanza delle femine ora è intervenuto a me. Così schernita è la sollicitudine di quello che cerca.	35 Then Rachel said to her father, 'Do not look angry, my lord, because I cannot rise in your presence,for I am as women are from time to time.' Laban searched but did not find the idols.
36 Ed enfiando Iacob, con rumore disse: per quale mia colpa e per quale peccato così alloperasti dopo me,	36 Then Jacob lost his temper and took Laban to task. And Jacob said to Laban, 'What is my offence,what is my crime, for you to have hounded me like this?
37 ed hae cerco ogni mia ricchezza? Quello che trovasti di tutta la sustanzia della casa tua, poni qui innanzi a' fratelli tuoi, acciò che giudichino intra te e me.	37 You have gone through al my belongings; have you found anything belonging to your household?Produce it here in the presence of my brothers and yours, and let them decide between the two of us.
38 Adunque Xx anni servii teco? Le pecore tue e le capre sterili non furo; li montoni della greggia tua non mangiai.	38 In al the twenty years I was under you, your ewes and your she-goats never miscarried, and I neverate rams from your flock.
39 Nè preso da bestia mostrai a te; io rendeva ogni danno, e qualunque cosa di furto periva, a me venivi per satisfazione.	39 Those mauled I never brought back to you, but bore the loss myself. You demanded compensationfrom me, whether the animal was stolen in daylight or at night.
40 Di di e di notte, di caldo e di freddo moriva; fuggiva anche lo sonno dagli occhi miei.	40 In the daytime the heat devoured me, and frost at night; I never had a good night's sleep.
41 E così per XX anni servii a te nella casa tua, XIIII per le figliuole, e sei per le gregge tue; e in verità tu mi mutasti la mercede mia in dieci volte.	41 It was like this for the twenty years I spent in your household. Fourteen years I slaved for you for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, since you changed my wages ten times over.
42 Se non che Iddio del padre mio Abraam e la paura di Isaac non fosse a me, forse che ora gnudo mi avresti lasciato. l'afflizione mia e la fa tica delle mani mie riguardò Iddio, e perciò riprese te ieri.	42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the Kinsman of Isaac, had not been with me, you wouldhave sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and my labours, and last night he deliveredjudgement.'
43 E rispose Laban: le figliuole mie e'figliuoli, e le tue gregge e tutte le cose che tu vedi sono mie: che posso io fare ai figliuoli e nepoti miei?	43 Laban replied to Jacob, 'These daughters are my daughters and these children are my children, thislivestock is my livestock: everything you see belongs to me. But what can I do today about my daughters here orabout the children they have borne?
44 Vieni adunque, e facciamo patto, acciò che sia testimonianza tra te e me.	44 So come, let us make a pact, you and me . . . , and let that serve as a witness between us.'
45 E tolse adunque Iacob una pietra, e dirizzò quella in titolo.	45 Jacob then took a stone and set it up as a memorial.
46 E disse a' fratelli suoi: arrecate delle pietre. I quali raunanti fecero uno monticello, e mangiarono sopra quello.	46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, 'Col ect some stones,' and gathering some stones they made a cairn.They had a meal there, on the cairn, and
47 Il quale chiamò Laban TUMULO DI TESTIMONIO, e Iacob MONTICELLO DI TESTIMONIO,ciascuno secondo la proprietade della lingua sua.	47 Laban cal ed it Jegar-Sahadutha while Jacob called it Galeed.
48 E disse Laban: questo tumulo sarà testimonio oggi intra me e te; e perciò sì è chiamato lo nome suo GALAAD, cioè tumulo di testimonio.	48 Laban said, 'May this cairn be a witness between us today.' That is why he named it Galeed,
49 (Ed aggiunse Laban, dicendo): riguardi lo Signore, e giudichi intra noi, quando noi ci dipar tiremo l'uno dall'altro,	49 and also Mizpah, because he said, 'Let Yahweh act as watchman between us when we are nolonger in sight of each other.
50 se tu tormenterae le figliuole mie, e se tu menerae altre mogli che loro; niuno è testimonio del nostro sermone senza Iddio, il quale è presente. Ragguardò,	50 If you il -treat my daughters or marry other women besides my daughters, even though no one bewith us, remember: God is witness between us.'
51 e disse una altra volta a Iacob: certamente questo tumulo, e la pietra che tu dirizzasti, sarà testimonio intra me e te.	51 Then Laban said to Jacob, 'Here is this cairn I have thrown up between us, and here the pil ar.
52 Io dico che questo tumulo e la pietra sieno in testimonianza; ma se io trapasserò quello, vegnendo a te, ovvero quello trapasserai, pensando male a me,	52 This cairn is a witness, and the pil ar is a witness, that I am not to cross to your side of this cairn andyou are not to cross to my side of this cairn and pillar, with hostile intent.
53 Iddio d'Abraam e Iddio di Nacor giudichi intra noi, Iddio del padre loro. Giurò Iacob per la paura del padre suo Isaac.	53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor judge between us.' Then Jacob swore by theKinsman of his father Isaac.
54 E sacrificati i sacrificii, chiamò i fratelli suoi, acciò che mangiassero lo pane. I quali, quando ebbero mangiato, istettero quivi.	54 He offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to the meal. They ate the meal, andpassed the night on the mountain.
55 Ma Laban, di notte levandosi, basciò i figliuoli suoi e le figliuole, e benedissele; e ritornò nel luogo suo.
