1 Anch'io certamente sono un uomo mortale come tutti gli al­tri e della stirpe di quel primo che fu fatto di terra, e nel seno di mia madre fui plasmato di car­ne,	1 Certainly, I myself am also a mortal man, like everyone, and the offspring of this earth, which was made beforehand; and in my mother’s womb I was fashioned with care,
2 nello spazio di dieci mesi fui coagulato nel sangue dal seme virile, col piacere compagno del sonno.	2 within the time of ten months, made of blood, from the seed of man and the delight of sleeping together.
3 Anch'io, nato che fui, respirai l'aria comune, caddi sul­ la medesima terra, e la mia prima voce, come quella di tutti gli al­tri, fu un vagito.	3 And when I was born, I drew in the common air, and in similar fashion, I fell upon the earth, and the first voice I uttered, like everyone, was crying.
4 Fui allevato nelle fasce con molte cure.	4 I was nursed in swaddling clothes and with great care.
5 Certamente nessuno dei re ebbe di­ verso il principio dell'esistenza.	5 For none of the kings had any other beginning of birth.
6 Unico è dunque per tutti il mo­do d'entrar nella vita e d'uscirne.	6 Therefore, there is only one entrance for everyone into life, and the same in leaving.
7 Per questo io desiderai la pru­denza, e mi fu concessa, invocai lo spirito della sapienza, e venne in me.	7 Because of this, I chose, and understanding was given to me; and I prayed, and the spirit of wisdom came to me;
8 E l'ho preferita agli scet­tri e ai troni, e le ricchezze le sti­mai un niente in paragone di lei.	8 and I placed her before kingdoms and thrones, and I considered riches nothing in comparison with her.
9 Non ho paragonate con lei le pietre preziose, perchè tutto l'oro in paragone di lei è un po'di sab­bia, e l'argento dinanzi a lei do­ vrà essere stimato come fango.	9 Neither did I compare to her a precious stone, for all gold in comparison with her is like a little sand, and silver, in view of her, will be valued as if dirt.
10 L'amai più della sanità e del­la bellezza, mi proposi di averla per mia luce, perchè è inestin­guibile il suo splendore.	10 I loved her above health and beauty, and I placed having her before light, for her light is unfailing.
11 Insieme con essa mi venne ogni bene e infinite ricchezze dalle sue ma­ni.	11 Yet all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable honors by her hand;
12 Io godei di tanti (beni), per­chè questa sapienza mi precede­ va, ed io non lo sapevo che di tutti questi beni era lei la madre.	12 and I rejoiced in all these, because this wisdom went before me, although I did not know that she is the mother of them all.
13 Senza finzioni la imparai, sen­za invidia la comunico, e non ne tengo nascoste le ricchezze,	13 This I have learned without falsehood and communicate without envy, and her integrity I do not hide.
14 per­chè essa è un tesoro infinito per gli uomini, e chi ne usa si unisce in amicizia con Dio, raccomandan­dolo i doni della dottrina.	14 Indeed, she is an infinite treasure chest for men, and those who make use of it, become partakers in the friendship of God, because they are recommended by the gifts of instruction.
15 A me poi Dio ha concesso di dire ciò che sento, e d'aver con­cetti degni dei doni ricevuti, per­chè lui è la guida della sapienza e il direttore dei saggi.	15 Yet God has given to me to speak my mind, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given to me, because he is the leader of wisdom and the repairer of understanding.
16 Siamo nelle sue mani, e noi, e le nostre parole, e tutta la sapienza, e il saper fare, e la istruzione.	16 For in his hand are both we, and our words, and all wisdom, and the works of science, and instruction.
17 Fu lui che mi dette la vera scienza degli esseri, da farmi conoscere la costituzione del mondo e le virtù degli elementi,	17 For he has given me true knowledge of these things which exist: so as to know the orderly arrangement of the world, and the powers of the elements,
18 il princi­pio, la fine e la metà dei tempi, le vicende dei cambiamenti, l'al­ternarsi delle stagioni,	18 the beginning and the end and the midpoint of the seasons, the characteristics of changing things, and the divisions of time,
19 i rivol­gimenti dell'anno, le posizioni degli astri,	19 the courses of the years, and the orderly arrangement of the stars,
20 la natura degli ani­mali, gli istinti delle fiere, la for­za del vento, i pensieri degli uo­mini, le varietà delle piante, le virtù delle radici.	20 the natures of animals, and the rage of wild beasts, the force of winds, and the reasonings of men, the diversities of plants, and the benefits of roots,
21 Io seppi tut­te le cose nascoste e palesi, per­chè la sapienza, che tutto fece, m'istrui.	21 and all such things as are hidden and unexpected, I have learned; for wisdom, the artisan of all things, taught me.
22 Nella sapienza è infatti lo spirito di intelligenza, santo, uni­co, molteplice, sottile, eloquen­te, agile, intemerato, infallibile, soave, amante del bene, pene­trante, irresistibile, benefico,	22 For in her is the spirit of understanding: holy, singular, manifold, subtle, perceptive, lively, chaste, reliable, gracious, loving, good, astute, who forbids nothing beneficial,
23 umano, benigno, costante, si­curo, tranquillo, che tutto può, che tutto prevede, che compren­de tutti gli spiriti, intelligente, puro, sottile.	23 humane, kind, steadfast, trustworthy, secure, having all virtue, watching for all things and grasping all things with a pure and most delicate understanding of spirit.
24 La sapienza è più agile d'ogni movimento, penetra da per tutto colla sua purez­za:	24 For wisdom is more active than all active things, yet she reaches everywhere because of her purity.
25 essa è vapore della virtù di Dio, una certa emanazione della gloria dell'Onnipotente; e per que­sto nulla in lei v'è d'impuro.	25 For she is a breath of the virtue of God and a genuine emanation from the purity of the almighty God, and therefore nothing unclean can invade her.
26 Essa è lo splendore della luce eter­na, specchio senza macchia della maestà di Dio, imagine della sua bontà.	26 Indeed, she is the brightness of eternal light, and the unspotted mirror of the majesty of God, and the image of his goodness.
27 Pur essendo unica può tutto, immutabile in sè, rinnovella ogni cosa; si comunica alle ani­me sante fra le nazioni, e forma gli amici di Dio e i profeti.	27 And though she is one, she can do all things; and, unchanging in herself, she renews all things, and throughout the nations she conveys herself to holy souls, establishing them as friends and prophets of God.
28 Dio non ama se non quelli che vivo­no colla sapienza.	28 For God loves none but those who dwell with wisdom.
29 Essa è più bella del sole, è al di sopra di ogni ordine di stelle, e, paragona­ta alla luce, è superiore;	29 For she is more spectacular than the sun, and above the array of all the stars; compared with the light, she is found to be before it.
30 perchè alla luce succede la notte, ma la malizia non può vincere la sapienza.	30 Indeed, after her comes night, but wisdom will not be overcome by malice.
