1 Due anni dopo, Faraone ebbe un sogno. Gli pareva di stare alla riva del fiume,	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 da cui salivano sette vacche oltremodo belle e grasse a pascolare nella giuncaia.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Dopo queste, dal fiume salivano sette altre, brutte e sfinite dalla magrezza, e si mettevano a pascolare sulla stessa riva del fiume dove era del verde,	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 e divorarono quelle che eran belle di aspetto e grasse. Svegliatosi Faraone,	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 si addormentò di nuovo, ed ebbe un altro sogno: Sette spighe piene e bellissime si ergevano sopra un unico stelo;	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 ma ecco sorgere altrettante spighe smilze ed arse dal vento infocato,	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 divorare tutte le prime, che erano sì belle.	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 Svegliatosi Faraone dal sonno, pieno di paura, appena venuta la mattina, mandò a chiamare tutti gl'indovini d'Egitto e tutti i sapienti, ai quali radunati raccontò il sogno; ma non vi era chi ne pote sse dare la spiegazione.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Allora finalmente il gran coppiere si ricordò, e disse: « Confesso il mio fallo:	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 il re, adirato contro i suoi servi, aveva fatto mettere nella prigione del capitano delle milizie me e il capo dei panettieri:	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 e tutt'e due una notte vi facemmo un sogno che presagiva il futuro.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 Vi era lì un giovanetto ebreo, servo dello stesso capitano delle milizie: a lui raccontammo i sogni	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 ed udimmo ciò che gli eventi in seguito hanno provato: infatti io fui rimesso nel mio ufficio e l'altro fu appeso al patibolo».	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 Subito, per comando del re, Giuseppe fu tratto di prigione: lo raserò, gli cambiarono il vestito e lo presentarono a Faraone,	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 il quale gli disse: « Ho fatto dei sogni, e non v'è chi li possa interpretare: ed ho sentito che tu li sai interpretare con grande saviezza ».	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 Giuseppe rispose: « Non io, ma Dio darà una risposta favorevole a Faraone ».	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 E Faraone, narrando quanto aveva veduto, disse: « Mi pareva di stare sulla riva del fiume,	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 e che dal fiume uscissero sette vacche molto belle e grasse, e si misero a pascolare nella giuncaia.	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 Ed ecco, dietro a queste venirne altre sette, tanto brutte e scarne che non ne ho mai viste uguali nella terra d'Egitto.	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 E queste dopo aver divorate e consumate le prime,	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 non dettero alcun segno d'essere satolle, ma restarono magre e squallide come prima. Svegliatomi, fui di nuovo oppresso dal sonno,	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 e vidi, sognando, sette spighe piene e bellissime spuntare da unico stelo,	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 poi altre sette smilze, e riarse dal vento infocato, venire su da una stoppia,	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 e queste divoraron le prime che eran si belle. Ho raccontato il sogno agli indovini; ma nessuno lo sa spiegare ».	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 Giuseppe rispose: «Il sogno del re si riduce ad uno solo: Dio ha mostrato a Faraone quello che sta per fare.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Le sette vacche belle e le sette spighe piene sono sette anni d'abbondanza, e nel sogno hanno la stessa significazione;	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Così le sette vacche scarne e macilente che salivano dopo le prime, e le sette spighe smilze e riarse dal vento infocato sono sette anni di futura carestia.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 E la cosa si compirà in quest'ordine:	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 verranno sette anni di grande abbondanza in tutta la terra d'Egitto,	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 dopo i quali verranno sette anni di carestia cosi grande da far dimenticare tutta la passata abbondanza, perchè la fame consumerà la terra,	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 e la grandezza della carestia assorbirà la grandezza dell'abbondanza.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 L'aver poi tu veduto un secondo sogno che si riferisce alla stessa cosa è segno certo che la parola di Dio sarà avverata nei fatti, e quanto prima.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 Or dunque il re dovrebbe scegliere un uomo saggio e attivo e costituirlo sopra la terra d'Egitto,	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 affinché egli deputi dei sopraintendenti in ogni regione, per radunare nei granai la quinta parte delle raccolte dei sette anni d'abbondanza,	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 che già stanno per cominciare. Poi tutto il frumento deve essere rinchiuso a disposizione di Faraone, e conservato nelle città,	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 affinchè sia pronto per la futura carestia di sette anni che verrà sopra l'Egitto: così il paese non sarà conusmato dalla fame ».	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 Il consiglio piacque a Faraone e a tutti i suoi ministri,	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 ai quali egli disse: « Potremo noi trovare un uomo come questo, che sia pieno dello spirito di Dio? »	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 Disse pertanto a Giuseppe: « Giacché Dio t'ha mostrato tutto quello che hai detto, potrò io trovare uno più saggio o simile a te?	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 Tu avrai la sovrintendenza della mia casa; tutto il popolo obbedirà ai tuoi ordini, ed io non avrò sopra di te che la precedenza del trono ».	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 E Faraone disse ancora a Giuseppe: « Ecco io ti dò autorità su tutto il paese d'Egitto ».	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 E toltosi l'anello di mano, lo pose in mano a lui; e lo fece vestire di lini finissimi e gli pose al collo una collana d'oro;	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 e lo fece salire sul suo secondo cocchio, e l'araldo gridava che tutti piegassero le ginocchia dinanzi a lui, e sapessero che era sovrintendente di tutto il paese d'Egitto.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 E il re disse ancora a Giuseppe: « Io sono Faraone: nessuno senza il tuo comando moverà mano o piede in tutto il paese d'Egitto ».	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 E gli mutò il nome e lo chiamò in lingua egiziana Salvatore del inondo. E gli diede in moglie Asenet figlia di Putifare, sacerdote di Eliopoli. Giuseppe adunque si recò a visitare la terra d'Egitto.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 Aveva trent'anni quando si presentò a Faraone, e fece il giro di tutte le provincie d'Egitto.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 Or durante la fertilità di sette anni, il grano legato in covoni, fu radunato nei granai d'Egitto,	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 e tutto il di più delle raccolte fu riposto in ciascuna città.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 E l'abbondanza del grano fu sì grande che uguagliò la rena del mare, e sorpassò ogni misura.	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 Prima che venisse la carestia nacquero a Giuseppe due figlioli, i quali furono partoriti a lui da Asenet figlia di Putifare, sacerdote di Eliopoli.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 Al primogenito pose il nome di Manasse, dicendo: « Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare ogni mio affanno ed anche la casa di mio padre ».	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 Al secondo poi diede il nome di Efraim, dicendo: « Il Signore mi ha fatto crescere nella terra della mia afflizione ».	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Passati poi i sette anni d'abbondanza in Egitto,	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 cominciarono a venire i sette anni di carestia predetti da Giuseppe; e la fame si fece sentire in tutto il mondo, mentre nella terra d'Egitto c'era del pane.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 E quando anche l'Egitto sentì la fame, il popolo si raccomandò a Faraone per avere da mangiare. E Faraone rispose: «Andate da Giuseppe, e fate tutto quello che vi dirà ».	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 Or la fame cresceva ogni giorno su tutta la terra, e Giuseppe, aperti tutti i granai, vendè agli Egiziani, chè erano anch'essi tormentati dalla fame.	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 E da tutte le parti venivano in Egitto a comprar da mangiare per trovar sollievo al male della carestia.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
