LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 In quel tempo non c'era re in Israele e la tribù di Dan stava cercandosi un territorio in cui abitare, perché fino a quel giorno non le era toccato un territorio in mezzo alle tribù di Israele.	1 In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.
2 I Daniti mandarono da Zorea e da Estaol cinque uomini prodi della loro gente, che abitavano nella loro terra, a percorrere ed esplorare la regione. Dettero loro quest'ordine: "Andate a esplorare la regione". Essi giunsero alla montagna di Efraim, fino alla casa di Mica, dove pernottarono.	2 From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.' The five men came to the highlands of Ephraim, asfar as Micah's house, and spent the night there.
3 Poiché essi si trovavano proprio vicino alla casa di Mica, riconobbero la voce del giovane levita. Si fermarono allora alla casa e gli domandarono: "Chi ti ha condotto qua? Che fai qui e che interessi ci hai?".	3 When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer,said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'
4 Quegli narrò loro tutto ciò che gli aveva fatto Mica, come Mica lo avesse preso al suo servizio e come ora egli facesse a Mica da sacerdote.	4 He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'
5 Essi gli chiesero allora che interrogasse Dio, per sapere se la loro missione avrebbe avuto buon esito.	5 They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'
6 Rispose loro il sacerdote: "Andate tranquilli, ché il Signore è favorevole alla vostra missione".	6 The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'
7 Proseguendo il loro viaggio, i cinque uomini giunsero a Lais, dove trovarono un popolo che viveva in pace sicura, secondo il costume dei Sidoni che sono pacifici e si sentono sicuri; in quella terra non mancava nulla, anzi era molto ricca. Inoltre Lais era lontana da Sidone e i suoi abitanti non avevano relazione con Aram.	7 The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.
8 Gli esploratori tornarono a Zorea e a Estaol, alla loro gente, che si informò come fosse andata la spedizione.	8 They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'
9 Risposero: "Muovetevi, perché assaliremo quella gente: noi siamo andati e abbiamo percorso la regione fino a Lais e abbiamo trovato un popolo che viveva in pace sicura, secondo il costume dei Sidoni; sono molto lontani da Sidone e non hanno relazione con Aram. Muovetevi, perché assaliremo quella gente: abbiamo visto che si tratta di una terra molto buona. E voi ve ne state inerti! Basta con questa pigrizia che non vi fa muovere per andare a conquistare la regione!	9 they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent,though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.
10 Quando arriverete troverete un popolo pacifico e una regione vasta. Dio la darà, ne siamo sicuri, nelle vostre mani: è un luogo in cui non manca nulla di quanto ci può essere sulla terra!".	10 When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'
11 Così una parte della tribù di Dan si mosse di lì, da Zorea e da Estaol: seicento uomini con le armi alla cintura.	11 From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.
12 Essi mossero verso nord e si accamparono a Kiriat-Iearim, nel territorio di Giuda. Perciò quel luogo fu chiamato campo di Dan, nome che mantiene anche oggi e si trova ad ovest di Kiriat-Iearim.	12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.
13 Di lì raggiunsero la montagna di Efraim e si fermarono alla casa di Mica.	13 From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.
14 Qui quei cinque uomini che erano stati ad esplorare la regione si rivolsero ai loro fratelli dicendo: "Lo sapete che in quelle case ci sono efod e terafim e una statua di metallo? Ora sapete quel che dovete fare".	14 The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'
15 Si fermarono alla casa dove abitava il giovane levita, la casa di Mica: entrati, salutarono il levita,	15 So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.
16 mentre i seicento uomini con le armi alla cintura si ponevano davanti alla porta.	16 While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,
17 Intanto i cinque uomini che erano stati ad esplorare la regione, dopo essere entrati, presero la statua di metallo, l'efod e i terafim. Il sacerdote si pose allora davanti alla porta e vi trovò i seicento uomini con le armi alla cintura.	17 the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue,the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.
18 Anche questi, entrati nella casa di Mica, si dettero a portar via la statua, l'efod e i terafim. Il sacerdote disse loro: "Che state facendo?".	18 These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'
19 Ma quelli gli risposero: "Sta' zitto! Mettiti una mano sulla bocca e vieni con noi, ché sarai per noi come un padre e un sacerdote. E' meglio per te essere il sacerdote di un uomo solo o essere il sacerdote di un'intera tribù di Israele?".	19 'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'
20 Il sacerdote si sentì lusingato: prese perciò l'efod e i terafim e la statua e si unì a quella gente.	20 The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.
21 Essi si rimisero in cammino verso la loro mèta, ponendo in testa alla colonna le donne, i bambini, il bestiame e il bagaglio.	21 Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.
22 Si erano già allontanati dalla casa di Mica quando gli uomini che abitavano nelle case vicine a quella di Mica si riunirono in armi, per inseguire quelli di Dan.	22 They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.
23 Li chiamarono ad alta voce e li fecero volgere, ma quelli dissero a Mica: "Che ti prende, a gridare così?".	23 As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'
24 Egli rispose: "Mi avete portato via il dio che mi ero fatto e il sacerdote, e che cosa mi vorreste portar via ancora? E mi domandate anche perché me la prendo?".	24 He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '
25 Ma quelli di Dan gli risposero: "Non ci far più sentire la tua voce, perché uomini esasperati non abbiano a piombare addosso a te e ai tuoi: così perderesti anche la vita, tu e i tuoi!".	25 The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'
26 I Daniti ripresero la loro via e Mica, che si era reso conto come quelli fossero più forti di lui, tornò a casa sua.	26 So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.
27 I Daniti si presero, dunque, ciò che Mica si era fatto e il suo sacerdote. Giunti a Lais, trovarono quel popolo pacifico e che si sentiva sicuro: lo passarono a fil di spada e dettero alle fiamme la città.	27 So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.
28 Non c'era nessuno che portasse loro soccorso, perché Lais era lontana da Sidone e i suoi abitanti non avevano relazioni con Aram. Lais era situata nella valle che conduce a Bet-Recob. I Daniti, ricostruita la città, vi abitarono,	28 There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob. They rebuilt the town and settled in it
29 chiamandola Dan, dal nome Dan del loro progenitore, uno dei figli di Israele; prima la città si chiamava Lais.	29 and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.
30 I Daniti si eressero qui l'idolo e Gionata, figlio di Ghersom, figlio di Mosè, e quindi i suoi discendenti furono sacerdoti della tribù di Dan fino al giorno della deportazione dalla terra.	30 The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.
31 Essi si eressero l'idolo che si era fatto Mica, che rimase in quel luogo per tutto il tempo in cui la casa di Dio fu in Silo.	31 The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.
