LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora Gesù fu condotto dallo Spirito nel deserto per essere tentato dal diavolo.	1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the desert to be put to the test by the devil.
2 E dopo aver digiunato quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, ebbe fame.	2 He fasted for forty days and forty nights, after which he was hungry,
3 Gli si avvicinò il tentatore e gli disse: "Se sei Figlio di Dio, di' che queste pietre diventino pane".	3 and the tester came and said to him, 'If you are Son of God, tel these stones to turn into loaves.'
4 Ma egli rispose: "Sta scritto: Non di solo pane vivrà l'uomo, ma di ogni parola che esce dalla bocca di Dio".	4 But he replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone but on every word that comesfrom the mouth of God.'
5 Allora il diavolo lo condusse con sé nella città santa e, postolo sul pinnacolo del tempio,	5 The devil then took him to the holy city and set him on the parapet of the Temple.
6 gli disse: "Se sei Figlio di Dio, gèttati giù. Infatti sta scritto: Darà ordini per te ai suoi angeli che ti sorreggano sulle braccia, perché non urti in qualche sasso il tuo piede".	6 'If you are Son of God,' he said, 'throw yourself down; for scripture says: He has given his angels ordersabout you, and they will carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.'
7 Gli rispose Gesù: "Sta anche scritto: Non tenterai il Signore Dio tuo".	7 Jesus said to him, 'Scripture also says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'
8 Di nuovo il diavolo lo condusse con sé sopra un monte altissimo e gli mostrò tutti i regni del mondo con la loro magnificenza.	8 Next, taking him to a very high mountain, the devil showed him al the kingdoms of the world and theirsplendour.
9 E gli disse: "Tutte queste cose io te le darò, se prostrato a terra mi adorerai".	9 And he said to him, 'I wil give you al these, if you fal at my feet and do me homage.'
10 Allora gli disse Gesù: "Vattene, Satana! Sta scritto: Adorerai il Signore Dio tuo e a lui solo presterai culto".	10 Then Jesus replied, 'Away with you, Satan! For scripture says: The Lord your God is the one to whomyou must do homage, him alone you must serve.'
11 Il diavolo allora lo lasciò. Ed ecco che gli angeli si avvicinarono a lui per servirlo.	11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels appeared and looked after him.
12 Quando poi seppe che Giovanni era stato imprigionato, Gesù si ritirò in Galilea;	12 Hearing that John had been arrested he withdrew to Galilee,
13 e lasciata Nazaret, andò ad abitare a Cafarnao, che si trova in riva del mare, nel territorio di Zabulon e di Nèftali;	13 and leaving Nazara he went and settled in Capernaum, beside the lake, on the borders of Zebulun andNaphtali.
14 perché si adempisse quanto fu annunciato dal profeta Isaia:	14 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
15 Terra di Zabulon e terra di Nèftali, sulla via del mare, al di là del Giordano, Galilea delle genti!	15 Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea beyond Jordan. Galilee of the nations!
16 Il popolo che giace nelle tenebre ha visto una gran luce, per quanti dimorano nella tenebrosa regione della morte una luce s'è levata.	16 The people that lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who lived in a country of shadowdark as death a light has dawned.
17 Da allora Gesù cominciò a predicare e a dire: "Convertitevi, poiché è vicino il regno dei cieli".	17 From then onwards Jesus began his proclamation with the message, 'Repent, for the kingdom ofHeaven is close at hand.'
18 Camminando lungo il mare di Galilea, Gesù vide due fratelli, Simone detto Pietro e Andrea suo fratello: stavano gettando in mare le reti, poiché erano pescatori.	18 As he was walking by the Lake of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was cal ed Peter, and hisbrother Andrew; they were making a cast into the lake with their net, for they were fishermen.
19 Disse loro: "Seguitemi e vi farò pescatori di uomini".	19 And he said to them, 'Come after me and I wil make you fishers of people.'
20 Essi all'istante, abbandonate le reti, lo seguirono.	20 And at once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Movendosi di là, vide altri due fratelli, Giacomo di Zebedeo e Giovanni suo fratello: stavano rassettando le reti sulla barca insieme al loro padre Zebedeo. Li chiamò	21 Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John;they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he cal ed them.
22 ed essi all'istante, abbandonata la barca con il padre, lo seguirono.	22 And at once, leaving the boat and their father, they fol owed him.
23 Percorrendo tutta la Galilea, Gesù insegnava nelle loro sinagoghe, annunciando il vangelo del regno e guarendo fra il popolo ogni malattia e infermità.	23 He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of thekingdom and curing al kinds of disease and il ness among the people.
24 Si sparse la sua fama per tutta la Siria, e così condussero a lui malati di ogni genere: sofferenti di infermità e dolori vari, indemoniati e paralitici, ed egli li guarì.	24 His fame spread throughout Syria, and those who were suffering from diseases and painful complaintsof one kind or another, the possessed, epileptics, the paralysed, were all brought to him, and he cured them.
25 Lo seguirono perciò folle numerose provenienti dalla Galilea, dalla Decapoli, da Gerusalemme, dalla Giudea e dalla Transgiordania.	25 Large crowds fol owed him, coming from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judaea and Transjordan.
