1 Quindi Giuditta disse loro: "Ascoltatemi, fratelli! Prendete questa testa e appendetela sugli spalti delle vostre mura.	1 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me, my brothers. Take this head and hang it on the parapet of your wall.
2 Quando poi apparirà la luce del mattino e il sole sorgerà sulla terra, ognuno prenda la propria armatura di guerra e ogni uomo valido esca dalla città. Iniziate l'azione contro di loro come se voleste scendere nella pianura contro l'avanguardia degli Assiri, ma in realtà non scenderete.	2 At daybreak, when the sun rises on the earth, let each of you seize his weapons, and let all the able-bodied men rush out of the city under command of a captain, as if about to go down into the plain against the advance guard of the Assyrians, but without going down.
3 Questi, prendendo le loro armature, accorreranno nel loro accampamento e sveglieranno i generali dell'esercito assiro, si precipiteranno verso la tenda di Oloferne, ma non lo troveranno; si lasceranno prendere dal terrore e fuggiranno davanti a noi.	3 They will seize their armor and hurry to their camp to awaken the generals of the Assyrian army. When they run to the tent of Holofernes and do not find him, panic will seize them, and they will flee before you.
4 Allora voi e tutti gli abitanti dell'intero territorio d'Israele inseguiteli e abbatteteli sul loro cammino.	4 Then you and all the other inhabitants of the whole territory of Israel will pursue them and strike them down in their tracks.
5 Ma prima di compiere ciò, chiamatemi Achior, l'ammonita, perché veda e riconosca colui che ha disprezzato la casa d'Israele e che l'ha inviato tra noi per destinarlo alla morte".	5 But before doing this, summon for me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and recognize the one who despised the house of Israel and sent him here to meet his death."
6 Fu fatto venire Achior dalla casa di Ozia. Quando venne e vide la testa di Oloferne nella mano di un uomo in mezzo all'assemblea del popolo, cadde bocconi a terra e svenne.	6 So they called Achior from the house of Uzziah. When he came and saw the head of Holofernes in the hand of one of the men in the assembly of the people, he fell forward in a faint.
7 Quando l'ebbero risollevato, si gettò ai piedi di Giuditta e prostrato davanti a lei disse: "Benedetta sei tu in tutte le tende di Giuda e fra tutti i popoli, che saranno presi da meraviglia quando udranno il tuo nome!	7 Then, after they lifted him up, he threw himself at the feet of Judith in homage, saying: "Blessed are you in every tent of Judah; and in every foreign nation, all who hear of you will be struck with terror.
8 Ora raccontami tutto quanto hai compiuto in questi giorni". Giuditta, stando in mezzo al popolo, gli raccontò tutto ciò che aveva fatto dal giorno in cui si era allontanata fino al momento in cui parlava loro.	8 But now, tell me all that you did during these days." So Judith told him, in the presence of the people, all that she had been doing from the day she left till the time she began speaking to them.
9 Quando ebbe cessato di parlare, il popolo scoppiò in alte esclamazioni di giubilo e riempì la città di grida festose.	9 When she finished her account, the people cheered loudly, and their city resounded with shouts of joy.
10 Achior, vedendo quanto aveva fatto il Dio d'Israele, credette fermamente in Dio, si fece circoncidere la carne del prepuzio e fu aggregato alla casa d'Israele fino al presente.	10 Now Achior, seeing all that the God of Israel had done, believed firmly in him. He had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, and he has been united with the house of Israel to the present day.
11 Quando spuntò il mattino, appesero la testa di Oloferne alle mura; ognuno impugnò le proprie armi e quindi, distribuiti in schiere, uscirono verso i pendii della montagna.	11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the wall. Then all the Israelite men took up their arms and went to the slopes of the mountain.
12 Quando li videro, gli Assiri mandarono ad informare i loro capi; questi corsero dai generali, dai chiliarchi e da tutti gli ufficiali.	12 When the Assyrians saw them, they notified their captains; these, in turn, went to the generals and division leaders and all their other commanders.
13 Poi si recarono alla tenda di Oloferne e dissero a colui che era preposto a tutte le sue cose: "Sveglia il nostro signore, perché quegli schiavi hanno avuto l'ardire di scendere a battaglia contro di noi, per farsi annientare completamente".	13 They came to the tent of Holofernes and said to the one in charge of all his things, "Waken our master, for the slaves have dared come down to give us battle, to their utter destruction."
14 Bagoa entrò e bussò alla cortina della tenda; pensava infatti che egli dormisse con Giuditta.	14 Bagoas went in, and knocked at the entry of the tent, presuming that he was sleeping with Judith.
15 Siccome nessuno si faceva sentire, aprì, entrò nella camera e lo trovò morto, disteso al suolo senza la testa che gli era stata portata via.	15 As no one answered, he parted the curtains, entered the bedroom, and found him lying on the floor, a headless corpse.
16 Allora si mise a gridare con pianti e lamenti urlando con forza e strappandosi le vesti.	16 He broke into a loud clamor of weeping, groaning, and howling, and rent his garments.
17 Poi entrò nella tenda dove era alloggiata Giuditta e non la trovò. Allora si precipitò fuori davanti al popolo gridando:	17 Then he entered the tent where Judith had her quarters; and, not finding her, he rushed out to the troops and cried:
18 "Quegli schiavi hanno agito perfidamente! Una sola donna ebrea ha gettato la vergogna sulla casa del re Nabucodònosor. Ecco, Oloferne giace a terra e la testa non è più su di lui!".	18 "The slaves have duped us! A single Hebrew woman has brought disgrace on the house of King Nebuchadnezzar. Here is Holofernes headless on the ground!"
19 Udite queste parole, i capi dell'esercito assiro lacerarono i loro mantelli con l'animo completamente sconvolto ed elevarono in mezzo all'accampamento altissime grida e urla di dolore.	19 When the commanders of the Assyrian army heard these words, they rent their tunics and were seized with consternation. Loud screaming and howling arose in the camp.
