1 I discepoli dei profeti dissero ad Eliseo: "Ecco, il luogo in cui noi abitiamo presso di te è troppo stretto per noi.	1 The guild prophets once said to Elisha: "There is not enough room for us to continue to live here with you.
2 Se vuoi, andremo al Giordano, là prenderemo una trave per ciascuno e ci faremo un luogo per abitarvi". Egli rispose: "Andate pure!".	2 Let us go to the Jordan, where by getting one beam apiece we can build ourselves a place to live." "Go," Elisha said.
3 Uno di loro disse: "Degnati di venire con i tuoi servi". Egli rispose: "Verrò!".	3 "Please agree to accompany your servants," one of them requested. "Yes, I will come," he replied.
4 E andò con loro. Giunti al Giordano, si misero a tagliare alcune piante.	4 So he went with them, and when they arrived at the Jordan they began to fell trees.
5 Mentre uno di essi abbatteva la sua trave, il ferro cadde nell'acqua. Allora si mise a gridare: "Ah, mio signore, esso era stato preso in prestito!".	5 While one of them was felling a tree trunk, the iron axhead slipped into the water. "O master," he cried out, "it was borrowed!"
6 L'uomo di Dio domandò: "Dov'è caduto?". Quegli gli fece vedere il posto. Allora egli tagliò un pezzo di legno, lo gettò là e il ferro venne a galla.	6 "Where did it fall?" asked the man of God. When he pointed out the spot, Elisha cut off a stick, threw it into the water, and brought the iron to the surface.
7 Poi disse: "Prendilo!". Quegli stese la mano e lo prese.	7 "Pick it up," he said. And the man reached down and grasped it.
8 Il re di Aram, mentre era in guerra con Israele, consigliò i suoi ufficiali dicendo: "Scendete e sistematevi in quel luogo determinato".	8 When the king of Aram was waging war on Israel, he would make plans with his servants to attack a particular place.
9 L'uomo di Dio mandò a dire al re d'Israele: "Sta' in guardia circa quel luogo, perché là scendono gli Aramei".	9 But the man of God would send word to the king of Israel, "Be careful! Do not pass by this place, for Aram will attack there."
10 Il re d'Israele mandò ad esplorare il luogo che l'uomo di Dio gli aveva indicato e su cui l'aveva premunito e se ne stette in guardia. Questo si verificò non una né due volte soltanto.	10 So the king of Israel would send word to the place which the man of God had indicated, and alert it; then they would be on guard. This happened several times.
11 Il cuore del re di Aram si turbò per questa cosa; perciò convocò i suoi ufficiali e disse loro: "Non mi sapete dire chi, tra noi, parteggia per il re d'Israele?".	11 Greatly disturbed over this, the king of Aram called together his officers. "Will you not tell me," he asked them, "who among us is for the king of Israel?"
12 Uno degli ufficiali replicò: "No, o re mio signore, ma è Eliseo, il profeta che si trova in Israele, che riferisce al re d'Israele le parole che dici nella tua camera da letto".	12 "No one, my lord king," answered one of the officers. "The Israelite prophet Elisha can tell the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom."
13 Egli ordinò: "Andate a vedere dove egli si trova e io manderò a catturarlo". Gli fu riferito: "Ecco, si trova in Dotan".	13 "Go, find out where he is," he said, "so that I may take him captive." Informed that Elisha was in Dothan,
14 Allora vi mandò cavalli, carri e un forte drappello, che arrivarono di notte e circondarono la città.	14 he sent there a strong force with horses and chariots. They arrived by night and surrounded the city.
15 All'indomani, l'uomo di Dio si levò in fretta e uscì; ma ecco che un drappello circondava la città con cavalli e carri. Il suo servo gli disse: "Ah! Che faremo, mio signore?".	15 Early the next morning, when the attendant of the man of God arose and went out, he saw the force with its horses and chariots surrounding the city. "Alas!" he said to Elisha. "What shall we do, my lord?"
16 Quegli rispose: "Non temere, perché c'è più gente con noi che con loro".	16 "Do not be afraid," Elisha answered. "Our side outnumbers theirs."
17 Eliseo pregò così: "Signore, apri i suoi occhi perché possa vedere". Il Signore aprì gli occhi del servo e questi vide: ecco il monte era pieno di cavalli e di carri di fuoco che circondavano Eliseo.	17 Then he prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes, that he may see." And the LORD opened the eyes of the servant, so that he saw the mountainside filled with horses and fiery chariots around Elisha.
18 Poiché gli Aramei scendevano verso di lui, Eliseo pregò così il Signore: "Colpisci di cecità questa gente!". E li colpì di cecità, secondo la parola di Eliseo.	18 When the Arameans came down to get him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, "Strike this people blind, I pray you." And in answer to the prophet's prayer the LORD struck them blind.
19 Allora Eliseo disse loro: "Questa non è la strada e neppure la città; venite dietro a me e vi condurrò dall'uomo che voi cercate": li condusse a Samaria.	19 Then Elisha said to them: "This is the wrong road, and this is the wrong city. Follow me! I will take you to the man you want." And he led them to Samaria.
20 Giunti che furono a Samaria, Eliseo disse: "O Signore, apri i loro occhi, perché vedano". Il Signore aprì i loro occhi e videro: si trovavano dentro Samaria!	20 When they entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open their eyes that they may see." The LORD opened their eyes, and they saw that they were inside Samaria.
21 Quando li vide, il re d'Israele disse a Eliseo: "Li devo uccidere, padre mio?".	21 When the king of Israel saw them, he asked, "Shall I kill them, my father?"
22 Eliseo rispose: "Non ucciderli; uccidi forse quelli stessi che fai prigionieri con la tua spada e il tuo arco? Metti davanti ad essi pane ed acqua perché mangino e bevano e poi ritornino dal loro signore".	22 "You must not kill them," replied Elisha. "Do you slay those whom you have taken captive with your sword or bow? Serve them bread and water. Let them eat and drink, and then go back to their master."
23 Fu preparato per essi un gran pranzo. Dopo che ebbero mangiato e bevuto, li rimandò ed essi ritornarono dal loro signore. D'allora in poi le bande di Aram non osarono più venire nel territorio d'Israele.	23 The king spread a great feast for them. When they had eaten and drunk he sent them away, and they went back to their master. No more Aramean raiders came into the land of Israel.
24 Dopo questi fatti, avvenne che Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, raccolse tutto il suo esercito e salì per porre l'assedio a Samaria.	24 After this, Ben-hadad, king of Aram, mustered his whole army and laid siege to Samaria.
25 Ci fu una grande fame in Samaria a causa dell'assedio, a tal punto che una testa d'asino valeva ottanta sicli d'argento e un quarto di qab di tuberi valeva cinque sicli.	25 Because of the siege the famine in Samaria was so severe that an ass's head sold for eighty pieces of silver, and a fourth of a kab of wild onion for five pieces of silver.
26 Mentre il re transitava sulle mura, una donna gli gridò: "Salvami, o re mio signore!".	26 One day, as the king of Israel was walking on the city wall, a woman cried out to him, "Help, my lord king!"
27 Questi le rispose: "Se non ti salva il Signore, come ti salverò io? Forse con i prodotti dell'aia o del torchio?".	27 "No," he replied, "the LORD help you! Where could I find help for you: from the threshing floor or the winepress?"
28 Poi il re le soggiunse: "Che cosa hai?". Ella rispose: "Questa donna mi ha detto: "Dammi tuo figlio perché lo mangiamo oggi; mio figlio lo mangeremo domani".	28 Then the king asked her, "What is your trouble?" She replied: "This woman said to me, 'Give up your son that we may eat him today; then tomorrow we will eat my son.'
29 Così abbiamo fatto cuocere mio figlio e l'abbiamo mangiato; poi il giorno seguente le ho detto: "Dammi tuo figlio perché lo mangiamo", ma lei ha nascosto suo figlio".	29 So we boiled my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, 'Now give up your son that we may eat him.' But she hid her son."
30 Udito che ebbe le parole della donna, il re si stracciò le vesti mentre transitava sulle mura, cosicché il popolo vide che sotto, aderente alla carne, c'era il sacco.	30 When the king heard the woman's words, he tore his garments. And as he was walking on the wall, the people saw that he was wearing sackcloth underneath, next to his skin.
31 E disse: "Che Dio mi faccia questo male e mi aggiunga ancora quest'altro, se la testa di Eliseo, figlio di Safat, resterà oggi sulle sue spalle!".	31 "May God do thus and so to me," the king exclaimed, "if the head of Elisha, son of Shaphat, stays on him today!"
32 Ora, mentre Eliseo se ne stava in casa sua e gli anziani stavano con lui, il re si fece precedere da un messaggero. Prima che questi giungesse da lui, egli disse agli anziani: "Avete visto che quel figlio di assassino ha mandato a tagliarmi la testa? Osservate: quando giungerà il messaggero, sbarrate la porta impedendogli così di entrare; forse che dietro di lui non v'è il rumore dei passi del suo signore?".	32 Meanwhile, Elisha was sitting in his house in conference with the elders. The king had sent a man ahead before he himself should come to him. Elisha had said to the elders: "Do you know that this son of a murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? When the messenger comes, see that you close the door and hold it fast against him. His master's footsteps are echoing behind him."
33 Mentre ancora parlava con essi, ecco che il re discese da lui e disse: "Ecco, questo male proviene dal Signore; che cosa posso ancora aspettarmi da lui?".	33 While Elisha was still speaking, the king came down to him and said, "This evil is from the LORD. Why should I trust in the LORD any longer?"
