1 Poi egli ordinò a colui che era a capo della sua casa: "Riempi i sacchi di quegli uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono contenere, e metti il danaro di ciascuno alla bocca del proprio sacco;	1 Then Joseph instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Fill their sacks with grain, as much as they are able to hold. And place each one’s money at the top of the sack.
2 e metti la mia coppa, la coppa d'argento, alla bocca del sacco del più piccolo, col denaro del suo grano". Quello fece conforme a quanto aveva detto Giuseppe.	2 But place my silver bowl, and the price that he gave for the wheat, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.” And so it was done.
3 Quando si schiarì la mattina, gli uomini furono fatti partire con i loro asini.	3 And when morning arose, they were sent away with their donkeys.
4 Ma erano appena usciti dalla città e ancora non erano lontani, quando Giuseppe disse a colui che era a capo della sua casa: "Lèvati, insegui quegli uomini, raggiungili e dirai loro: "Perché avete reso male per bene?	4 And now they had departed from the city and had set out a short distance. Then Joseph, sending for the steward of his house, said: “Rise up and pursue the men. And when you have overtaken them, say: ‘Why have you returned evil for good?
5 Non è forse quella la coppa in cui beve il mio signore e della quale si serve per indovinare? Avete fatto male a fare così!".	5 The cup that you have stolen, it is that from which my lord drinks, and in which he is accustomed to discern signs. You have done a very sinful thing.’ ”
6 Quello li raggiunse e ripeté loro queste parole.	6 He did as he had been ordered. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them according to the order.
7 Allora quelli gli dissero: "Perché il mio signore dice queste cose? Lungi dai tuoi servi il fare una tale cosa!	7 And they responded: “Why does our lord speak in this way, as though your servants had committed such a shameful act?
8 Ecco, il denaro che abbiamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi te lo abbiamo riportato dalla terra di Canaan, e come potremmo rubare argento e oro dalla casa del tuo padrone?	8 The money, which we found at the top of our sacks, we carried back to you from the land of Canaan. So in what way does it follow that we would steal, from the house of your lord, gold or silver?
9 Quello dei tuoi servi presso il quale si troverà, sarà messo a morte; e noi pure, noi diventeremo schiavi del mio signore".	9 Whichever of your servants will be found to have what you seek, may he die, and we shall be the servants of my lord.”
10 Quello disse: "Ebbene, come avete detto, così sarà: colui presso il quale si troverà, sarà mio schiavo, e voi sarete innocenti".	10 And he said to them: “Let it be according to your verdict. With whomever it will be found, let him be my servant, but you will be unharmed.”
11 Si affrettarono dunque a scaricare a terra ciascuno il suo sacco e ciascuno aprì il suo sacco.	11 And so, they quickly placed their sacks down to the ground, and each one was opened.
12 E quello li frugò, cominciando dal maggiore e terminando col minore, e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamino.	12 And when he had searched, beginning with the oldest, all the way to the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.
13 Allora essi si stracciarono le vesti, ricaricarono ciascuno il suo asino e ritornarono nella città.	13 But they, tearing their garments and burdening their donkeys again, returned to the town.
14 Giuda e i suoi fratelli vennero nella casa di Giuseppe, che si trovava ancora là, e si gettarono in terra davanti a lui.	14 And Judah, first among his brothers, entered to Joseph (for he had not yet departed from the place) and together they all fell down before him to the ground.
15 Giuseppe disse loro: "Che azione è questa che avete commesso! Non sapete che un uomo come me è capace d'indovinare?".	15 And he said to them: “Why would you choose to act in this way? Could you be ignorant that there is no one like me in the knowledge of discerning signs?”
16 Giuda disse: "Che cosa diremo al mio signore? Come parlare? Come giustificarci? Dio ha ritrovato la colpa dei tuoi servi... Eccoci schiavi del mio signore, tanto noi quanto colui in possesso del quale fu trovata la coppa".	16 And Judah said to him, “What could we answer to my lord? And what would we be able to say, or to justly claim? God has discovered the iniquity of your servants. See, we have all become servants to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.”
17 Ma egli rispose: "Dio me ne guardi di far questo! L'uomo in possesso del quale fu trovata la coppa, lui sarà mio schiavo; quanto a voi, ritornate in pace da vostro padre".	17 Joseph responded: “Far be it from me that I should act in this way. He who stole the cup, he will be my servant. But you may go away free to your father.”
18 Allora Giuda gli si fece innanzi e disse: "Mi scusi il mio signore! Sia permesso al tuo servo di far sentire una parola agli orecchi del mio signore; e non si accenda la tua ira contro il tuo servo, perché tu e il faraone siete tutt'uno!	18 Then Judah, approaching closer, said confidently: “I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in your ears, and do not be angry with your servant. For you are next to Pharaoh.
19 Il mio signore aveva interrogato i suoi servi in questi termini: "Avete un padre o un fratello?".	19 My lord, you questioned your servants before: ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
20 E noi rispondemmo al mio signore: "Abbiamo un padre vecchio, e un figliolo ancor piccolo, natogli in vecchiaia; suo fratello è morto ed egli è rimasto il solo dei figli di sua madre, e il padre suo lo ama".	20 And we answered you, my lord: ‘There is our father, an old man, and a young boy, who was born in his old age. His brother of the same womb has died, and he alone is left to his mother and father, who truly love him tenderly.’
21 E tu dicesti ai tuoi servi: "Conducetelo qui da me, che lo possa vedere con i miei occhi".	21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.’
22 Noi rispondemmo al mio signore: "Il giovinetto non può abbandonare suo padre; se lascerà suo padre, questi ne morrà".	22 We suggested to my lord: ‘The boy is not able to leave his father. For if he sends him away, he will die.’
23 Ma tu dicesti ai tuoi servi: "Se il vostro fratello minore non verrà qui con voi, non potrete più venire alla mia presenza".	23 And you said to your servants: ‘Unless your youngest brother arrives with you, you will not see my face any more.’
24 Quando dunque fummo risaliti dal tuo servo, mio padre, gli riferimmo le parole del mio signore.	24 Therefore, when we had gone up to your servant our father, we explained to him all that my lord had spoken.
25 Poi nostro padre disse: "Tornate a comperare un po' di viveri".	25 And our father said: ‘Return and buy us a little wheat.’
26 E noi rispondemmo: "Non possiamo scendere laggiù; se c'è con noi il nostro fratello minore, andremo laggiù, altrimenti non possiamo essere ammessi alla presenza di quell'uomo senza avere con noi il nostro fratello minore".	26 And we said to him: ‘We cannot go. If our youngest brother descends with us, we will set out together. Otherwise, in his absence, we do not dare to see the face of the man.’
27 Allora il tuo servo, mio padre, ci disse: "Voi sapete che due erano quelli che mi aveva partorito mia moglie.	27 To which he responded: ‘You know that my wife conceived twice by me.
28 Uno partì da me, e dissi: senza nessun dubbio è stato sbranato!, e da allora non l'ho più visto.	28 One went out, and you said, “A beast devoured him.” And since then, he has not appeared.
29 Se ora mi porterete via anche questo e gli capitasse una disgrazia, voi fareste scendere i miei bianchi capelli con cordoglio nell'oltretomba!".	29 If you take this one also, and anything happens to him on the way, you will lead my grey hairs down with grief to the grave.’
30 E adesso, quando io arriverò dal tuo servo, mio padre, e il giovinetto non sarà con noi, mentre la vita dell'uno è legata alla vita dell'altro,	30 Therefore, if I would have gone to your servant, our father, with the boy not present, (though his life depends upon the life of him)
31 avverrà che, appena egli avrà visto che il giovinetto non è con noi, morirà, e i tuoi servi avranno fatto scendere i bianchi capelli del tuo servo, nostro padre, con cordoglio nell'oltretomba.	31 and if he were to see that he is not with us, he would die, and your servants will lead his grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.
32 Siccome il tuo servo si è reso garante del giovinetto presso mio padre, dicendo: "Se non te lo ricondurrò, sarò colpevole verso mio padre per tutta la vita",	32 Let me be your very own servant, for I accepted this one into my trust, and I promised, saying: ‘Unless I lead him back, I will be guilty of a sin against my father for all time.’
33 lascia, di grazia, che rimanga il tuo servo invece del giovinetto come schiavo del mio signore, e il giovinetto ritorni lassù con i suoi fratelli!	33 And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.
34 Perché, come potrei ritornare da mio padre, mentre il ragazzo non è con me? Che io non veda il dolore che opprimerebbe mio padre!".	34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I appear as a witness to the calamity that will oppress my father.”
