1 - In principio era il Verbo e il Verbo era presso Dio e il Verbo era Dio.	1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word.
2 Egli era al principio presso Dio.	2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Tutto per mezzo di lui è stato fatto e senza di lui non è stato fatto nulla di ciò ch'è stato fatto.	3 All things were made through Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him.
4 In lui era vita, e la vita era la luce degli uomini.	4 Life was in Him, and Life was the light of men.
5 E la luce splende fra le tenebre e le tenebre non l'hanno accolta.	5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6 Ci fu un uomo inviato da Dio; di nome Giovanni.	6 There was a man sent by God, whose name was John.
7 Egli venne in testimonianza per rendere testimonianza alla luce, affinchè tutti credessero per lui;	7 He arrived as a witness to offer testimony about the Light, so that all would believe through him.

9 Era la luce vera, che illumina ogni uomo che viene a questo mondo.	9 The true Light, which illuminates every man, was coming into this world.
10 Egli era nel mondo e il mondo per mezzo di lui fu fatto, e il mondo non l'ha conosciuto.	10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not recognize him.
11 È venuto nella sua proprietà e i suoi non l'hanno accolto.	11 He went to his own, and his own did not accept him.
12 A tutti quelli però che l'hanno accolto, a quelli che credono nel suo nome, ha dato il potere di diventare figliuoli di Dio;	12 Yet whoever did accept him, those who believed in his name, he gave them the power to become the sons of God.
13 i quali, non da sangue nè da volontà di carne, nè da volontà di uomo, ma da Dio son nati.	13 These are born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 Il Verbo si è fatto carne ed abitò tra noi; e noi ne abbiamo veduta la gloria, gloria eguale a quella dell'Unigenito del Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.	14 And the Word became flesh, and he lived among us, and we saw his glory, glory like that of an only-begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 Giovanni gli rende testimonianza e grida in questi termini: «Ecco colui del quale dissi: - Chi verrà dopo di me è stato fatto prima di me, perchè egli era prima di me - ».	15 John offers testimony about him, and he cries out, saying: “This is the one about whom I said: ‘He who is to come after me, has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”
16 E della pienezza di lui tutti abbiam ricevuto, e grazia su grazia.	16 And from his fullness, we all have received, even grace for grace.
17 Perchè la legge è stata data da Mosè; la gloria e la verità sono venute da Gesù Cristo.	17 For the law was given though Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 Nessuno ha veduto mai Dio; il Figlio unigenito, che è nel seno del Padre, ce l'ha fatto conoscere.	18 No one ever saw God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he himself has described him.
19 Ed ecco la testimonianza resa da Giovanni, quando i Giudei mandarono da Gerusalemme sacerdoti e Leviti per domandargli: «Chi sei tu?».	19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him, so that they might ask him, “Who are you?”
20 Ed egli affermò e non negò e confessò: «Non sono io il Cristo».	20 And he confessed it and did not deny it; and what he confessed was: “I am not the Christ.”
21 Allora gli domandarono: «Chi sei dunque? Sei tu Elia?». Egli rispose: «Non lo sono». «Sei tu il profeta?». E rispose: «No».	21 And they questioned him: “Then what are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 Allora gli dissero: «Chi sei dunque? Affinchè possiamo portare una risposta a coloro che ci hanno mandato. Che cosa dici di te stesso?».	22 Therefore, they said to him: “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 Egli replicò: «Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto: - Raddrizzate la via del Signore -, come ha detto il profeta Isaia».	23 He said, “I am a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 Ora quegl'inviati erano Farisei	24 And some of those who had been sent were from among the Pharisees.
25 e gli domandarono: «Perchè dunque battezzi, se non sei nè il Cristo, nè Elia, nè il Profeta?».	25 And they questioned him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?”
26 Giovanni rispose loro: «Io battezzo nell'acqua; ma in mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete.	26 John answered them by saying: “I baptize with water. But in your midst stands one, whom you do not know.
27 È colui che verrà dopo di me, ma che è stato prima di me e del quale io non sono degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari».	27 The same is he who is to come after me, who has been placed ahead of me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen.”
28 Questo accadeva in Betania oltre il Giordano, dove Giovanni stava a battezzare.	28 These things happened in Bethania, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 Il giorno dopo Giovanni vide Gesù venire a sè, e gridò: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio, che toglie il peccato del mondo.	29 On the next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and so he said: “Behold, the Lamb of God. Behold, he who takes away the sin of the world.
30 Egli è colui del quale ho detto: - Dopo di me viene un uomo che mi ha preceduto, perchè era prima di me. -	30 This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me arrives a man, who has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’
31 Ed io non lo conoscevo; ma per questo sono venuto a battezzare con acqua, affinchè fosse manifestato in Israele».	31 And I did not know him. Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water: so that he may be made manifest in Israel.”
32 E Giovanni rese la sua testimonianza così: «Ho veduto lo Spirito discendere, come una colomba, dal cielo e posarsi sopra di lui.	32 And John offered testimony, saying: “For I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove; and he remained upon him.
33 E io non lo conoscevo; ma chi mi ha mandato a battezzare nell'acqua, mi ha detto: - Colui sul quale vedrai scendere e fermarsi lo Spirito, è quegli stesso che battezza nello Spirito Santo. -	33 And I did not know him. But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: ‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
34 E ho veduto e ho testimoniato esser egli il Figliuol di Dio».	34 And I saw, and I gave testimony: that this one is the Son of God.”
35 Il giorno seguente Giovanni si trovava di nuovo là, con due suoi discepoli	35 The next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples.
36 e, fissato lo sguardo in Gesù che passava, disse: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio!».	36 And catching sight of Jesus walking, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
37 I due discepoli udirono queste parole e andaron dietro a Gesù.	37 And two disciples were listening to him speaking. And they followed Jesus.
38 Gesù si volse e, notato che lo seguivano, domandò loro: «Chi cercate?». Essi gli dissero: «Rabbi», (che tradotto vuol dire "Maestro"), «dove abiti?».	38 Then Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him, said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi (which means in translation, Teacher), where do you live?”
39 Egli rispose loro: «Venite e vedrete». Andarono e videro dove egli abitava; e rimasero con lui per quel giorno. Era circa l'ora decima.	39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour.
40 Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, era un dei due che avevano udite le parole di Giovanni e aveva seguìto Gesù.	40 And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard about him from John and had followed him.
41 Imbattutosi pertanto con suo fratello, Simone, gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato il Messia» (che tradotto vuol dire "il Cristo"), e lo portò da Gesù.	41 First, he found his brother Simon, and he said to him, “We have found the Messiah,” (which is translated as the Christ).
42 E Gesù, fissando bene in lui lo sguardo, disse: «Tu sei Simone, figliuolo di Giona: tu ti chiamerai Cefa» (che vuol dire "Pietro").	42 And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, gazing at him, said: “You are Simon, son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas,” (which is translated as Peter).
43 Il giorno seguente Gesù volle andare in Galilea e trovato Filippo, gli disse: «Seguimi».	43 On the next day, he wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Filippo era di Betsaida, patria di Andrea e di Pietro.	44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Filippo essendosi incontrato con Natanaele gli narrò: «Abbiamo trovato colui di cui scrissero Mosè nella Legge, e i Profeti: "Gesù, figlio di Giuseppe, da Nazaret"».	45 Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
46 Natanaele gli rispose: «Può mai venire qualcosa di buono da Nazaret?». Filippo gli disse: «Vieni e vedi».	46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good be from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Gesù vide venirgli incontro Natanaele e, parlando di lui, disse: «Ecco un vero Israelita, nel quale non c'è malizia».	47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and he said about him, “Behold, an Israelite in whom truly there is no deceit.”
48 Natanaele gli chiese: «Come mai mi conosci?». Gesù rispose: «Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse, quando eri sotto il fico, io ti vidi».	48 Nathanael said to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus responded and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Natanaele gli replicò: «Rabbi, tu sei il Figliuol di Dio! Tu sei il re d'Israele!».	49 Nathanael answered him and said: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”
50 Gesù rispondendo gli disse: «Perchè io ho detto che ti ho veduto sotto il fico, tu credi? Tu vedrai cose più grandi di queste!».	50 Jesus responded and said to him: “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, you believe. Greater things than these, you will see.”
51 Poi soggiunse: «In verità, in verità vi dico che vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere sul Figliuol dell'uomo».	51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the Angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.”
