1 And the men of Ephraim said to him, “What is this, that you wanted to do, so that you would not call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they rebuked him strongly, and came close to using violence.	1 E dissono gli uomini di Efraim a Gedeon: che è questo che hae voluto fare, cioè a non chiamarci, quando andasti alla battaglia contro (all' oste di) Madian? e contendendo forte con lui, e quasi volendogli mettere le mani adosso.
2 And he responded to them: “But what could I have done that would be so great as what you have done? Is not one bunch of grapes of Ephraim better than the vintages of Abiezer?	2 Ai quali respuose Gedeon: e come ho io potuto fare quello che voi faceste? Non è meglio il racemo di Efraim, che tutte le uve delle vendemmie di Abiezer? (cioè a dire più è quello poco che avete fatto voi, che ciò che abbiamo fatto noi che fummo nell' oste).
3 The Lord has delivered into your hands the leaders of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. What could I have done that would be so great as what you have done?” And when he had said this, their spirit, which was swelling up against him, was quieted.	3 Nelle vostre mani mise Iddio amendue i principi di Madian, cioè Oreb e Zeb: come poteo io fare quello che avete fatto voi? Il quale avendo detto questo, incontenente si riposò lo spirito loro, col quale istavano enfiati contro a lui.
4 And when Gideon had arrived at the Jordan, he crossed over it with the three hundred men who were with him. And they were so weary that they were unable to pursue those who were fleeing.	4 E venendo poi Gedeon al (fiume) Giordano, sì lo passò con quelli trecento uomini i quali erano con lui; e perchè erano lassi, non poteano perseguitare coloro i quali fuggivano.
5 And he said to the men of Succoth, “I beg you, give bread to the people who are with me, for they are greatly weakened, so that we may be able to pursue Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”	5 E disse Gedeon agli uomini (della città) di Soccot: priegovi che voi diate del pane al popolo il quale è con meco, imperciò che sono molto indeboliti (e venuti meno), acciò che noi possiamo perseguitare (i nostri nemici) Zebee e Salmana re di Madian.
6 The leaders of Succoth answered, “Perhaps the palms of the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna are in your hand, and for this reason, you request that we give bread to your army.”	6 E rispuoseno loro (gli uomini e) li principi di Soccot: forse che le palme delle mani di Zebee e di Salmana sono nelle tue mani, e però tu addimandi (e chiedi) che noi diamo all' oste tuo pane (a mangiare).
7 And he said to them, “So then, when the Lord will have delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hands, I will thresh your flesh with the thorns and briers of the desert.”	7 Ai quali disse Gedeon: io vi prometto che quando Iddio Signore avrà dato (e messo) Zebee e Salmana nelle mie mani (e quando sarò tornato in pace vincitore) io straccerò (e taglierò) le carni vostre con le spine e con li triboli del deserto.
8 And going up from there, he arrived at Penuel. And he spoke to the men of that place similarly. And they also answered him, just as the men of Succoth had answered.	8 E quindi partendosi, venne giuso in Fanuel; e simiglianti parole disse agli uomini di quella terra. Al quale respuosono, come aveano detto quelli della città di Soccot.
9 And so he said to them also, “When I will have returned as a victor in peace, I will destroy this tower.”	9 E disse Gedeon ancora a loro: quando io sarò ritornato vincitore in pace, io caccerò a terra questa torre.
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were resting with their entire army. For fifteen thousand men were left out of all the troops of the eastern people. And one hundred twenty thousand warriors that drew the sword had been cut down.	10 Ma Zebee e Salmana si riposavano con tutto l'oste loro; imperò che XV milia di uomini erano rimasi di tutta la moltitudine de' popoli d' oriente, essendone stati morti CXX milia di buoni combattitori, uomini tutti potenti (a trarre fuori a battaglia e) a menare le spade (e le coltella).
11 And Gideon ascended by the way of those who were dwelling in tents, to the eastern part of Nobah and Jogbehah. And he struck the camp of the enemies, who were confident and were suspecting nothing adverse.	11 E andando Gedeon suso per la via verso coloro che istavano (e riposavansi) nelli loro tabernacoli, nella parte dell' oriente di Nobe e Jegbaa, percosse (addosso e isconfisse) l'oste de' nemici, i quali si stavano sicuramente, e non si pensavano che nulla cosa avversa fosse inverso loro (dalli loro nemici).
12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled. And Gideon pursued and overtook them, sending their entire army into confusion.	12 E fuggirono Zebee e Salmana; i quali perseguitando Gedeon, sì gli prese, avendo isconfitto tutto l'oste loro.
13 And returning from the war before sunrise,	13 E tornando dalla battaglia innanzi che il sole si levasse,
14 he took a boy from among the men of Succoth. And he asked him the names of the leaders and elders of Succoth. And he described seventy-seven men.	14 prese uno garzone degli uomini di Soccot; e sì lo domandò de' nomi de' principi e degli antichi di Soccot, e quello garzone gli nominò LXXVII uomini.
15 And he went to Succoth, and he said to them: “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, over whom you rebuked me, saying: ‘Perhaps the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna are in your hands, and for this reason, you request that we give bread to men who are languishing and weakened.’ ”	15 E venne Gedeon alla terra di Soccot, e sì disse a quelli (della terra): ecco Zebee e Salmana, sopra de' quali voi (faceste beffe e strazio di me, e) rimproverastemi, dicendo: forse che le mani di Zebee e di Salmana sono nelle tue mani, e però addimandi che noi aiutiamo a te e agli uomini che sono teco, i quali sono affaticati, e vennero meno i pani?
16 Therefore, he took the elders of the city, and, using the thorns and briers of the desert, he threshed them with these, and he cut the men of Succoth to pieces.	16 E prese Gedeon gli antichi e quelli che reggevano la cittade; e sì li fece battere colle spine (e colli pruni) e colli triboli del deserto; e così uccise gli uomini (predetti, presi) della detta cittade.
17 He also overturned the tower of Penuel, and he killed the men of the city.	17 E la torre di Fanuel sì cacciò a terra, e sì uccise tutti gli abitatori della cittade.
18 And he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men were those whom you killed at Tabor?” They responded, “They were like you, and one of them was like the son of a king.”	18 E disse Gedeon a Zebee e a Salmana (re): come furono fatti gli uomini, i quali voi uccideste in Tabor? I quali sì respuosero: somiglianti furono a te, e uno di loro quasi somigliante a figliuolo di re.
19 He answered them: “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the Lord lives, if you had preserved them, I would not kill you.”	19 Ai quali disse Gedeon: fratelli miei furono, figliuoli della madre mia. Per Dio vivo e vero, che se voi gli aveste riservati (e non gli aveste morti), io non vi ucciderei.
20 And he said to Jether, his firstborn son, “Rise up, and put them to death.” But he did not draw his sword. For he was afraid, being still a boy.	20 E disse a Ieter, suo figliuolo primogenito :. lièvati suso, e sì gli uccidi. Il quale non fu ardito di trarre fuori il coltello; imperciò che avea paura, perchè era ancora (molto) fanciullo.
21 And Zebah and Zalmunna said: “You should rise up and rush against us. For the strength of a man is in accord with his age.” Gideon rose up, and he killed Zebah and Zalmunna. And he took the ornaments and studs, with which the necks of the royal camels are usually adorned.	21 E dissono Zebee e Salmana (re a Gedeon): lièvati suso tu, e ci uccidi, imperciò che tu se' (forte e) robusto, secondo etade d' uomo perfetta. E levossi suso Gedeon, e sì uccise Zebee e Salmana; e sì tolse gli ornamenti e le bolle (dell' oro) ch' erano usanza allora, che i colli de' re e de' camelli sì si ornavano.
22 And all the men of Israel said to Gideon: “You should rule over us, and your son, and your son’s son. For you freed us from the hand of Midian.”	22 E dissono tutti gli uomini d' Israel a Gedeon: signoreggia sopra noi, e sii nostro signore, tu e il tuo figliuolo [e lo figliuolo del figliuolo tuo]; però che tu ci hai liberato dalle mani (di quelli) di Madian.
23 And he said to them: “I will not rule over you. Neither shall my son rule over you. Instead, the Lord shall rule over you.”	23 Ai quali (rispuose e) disse Gedeone: non (signoreggerò sopra voi e non) sarò vostro signore, e non sarà mio figliuolo vostro signore; ma sarà vostro signore Iddio.
24 And he said to them: “I petition one request from you. Give me the earrings from your spoils.” For the Ishmaelites were accustomed to wear gold earrings.	24 E disse a loro Gedeone: una petizione (e una cosa) v' addomando, cioè che voi mi diate tutti gli anelli, che portavano quelli dell' oste di Madian nelli orecchii, i quale avete tolti. Però ch' era usanza, che tutti quelli Ismaeliti (e quelle nazioni dell' oriente) tutti portassono anelli d'oro nelli orecchii.
25 They responded, “We are very willing to give them.” And spreading a cloak on the ground, they cast upon it the earrings from the spoils.	25 I quali respuosono (e dissono): molto volentieri te gli daremo. E gittando a terra uno panno (largo e lungo), gittarono sopra tutti questi anelli da orecchie, i quali avevano avuti da uomini morti.
26 And the weight of the earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, aside from the ornaments, and necklaces, and purple garments, which the kings of Midian were accustomed to use, and aside from the gold chains on the camels.	26 E fue il peso di questi anelli, che avea domandato Gedeone, mille settecento sicli d' oro, senza gli ornamenti e le corone e le vesti le quali erano di rosato, delle quali vestimenta i re di Madian erano usati di vestire, e senza i collari dell' oro che portavano i cammelli.
27 And Gideon made an ephod from these, and he kept it in his city, Ophrah. And all of Israel committed fornication with it, and it became a ruin to Gideon and to all his house.	27 E fecene Gedeone di tutte queste cose uno vestimento da prete, e si i puose nella città sua, la quale si chiamava EFRA. E tutto quanto Israel sì commise peccato in lui, adorandolo; e venne in scandalo e in pericolo di Gedeone, e disfacimento di tutta la sua casa.
28 But Midian was humbled before the sons of Israel. Neither were they able any longer to lift up their necks. But the land rested for forty years, while Gideon presided.	28 E fue umiliato (e attrito) Madian da' figliuoli d' Israel, e non poterono più oltre levare i capi; ma riposossi la terra in pace quaranta anni, insino a tanto che (fue vivo e) signoreggiò Gedeone.
29 And so Jerubbaal, the son of Joash, went and lived in his own house.	29 E andossene Jerobaal (cioè Gedeone) figliuolo di Ioas, (e istettesi) e abitò nella casa sua.
30 And he had seventy sons, who went forth from his own thigh. For he had many wives.	30 Ed ebbe LXX figliuoli, i quali (fece e) uscirono del seme suo, imperciô ch' egli ebbe più mogli.
31 But his concubine, whom he had in Shechem, bore him a son named Abimelech.	31 Ma la concubina sua, la quale avea in Sichem, sì gli fece uno figliuolo, il quale ebbe nome Abimelec.
32 And Gideon, the son of Joash, died in a good old age, and he was buried in the sepulcher of his father, at Ophrah, of the family of Ezri.	32 E morì Gedeone figliuolo di Ioas in buona vecchiezza (e santa); e fue sotterrato nel sepolcro del padre suo, cioè in Efra ch' era della famiglia di Ezri.
33 But after Gideon died, the sons of Israel turned away, and they committed fornication with the Baals. And they struck a covenant with Baal, so that he would be their god.	33 E poi che fu morto Gedeone, sì si partirono da Dio i figliuoli d' Israel, e fecero peccato collo idolo Baal (e sì lo adorarono); e fecero patto (e legamento) con l'idolo Baal, acciò che fosse loro dio.
34 And they did not remember the Lord their God, who rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on all sides.	34 E non si ricordarono di Dio Signore loro, il quale (gli liberò e) trassegli delle mani di tutti i loro nemici ch' erano dintorno.
35 Neither did they show mercy to the house of Jerubbaal Gideon, in accord with all the good that he had done for Israel.	35 E ancora non fecero misericordia con la casa di Gedeone, secondo tutti quanti i beni i quali avea fatti ad Israel.
