1 And so Jerubbaal, who is also Gideon, rising in the night, and all the people with him, went to the fountain which is called Harod. Now the camp of Midian was in the valley, to the northern region of the high hill.	1 E poi levandosi Gedeon, il quale fue chiamato Ierobaal, venne di notte, e tutto il popolo con lui insieme venne ad una fonte la quale si chiama Arad; imperciò ch' erano l'oste e il campo di quelli di Madian nella valle dalla parte del settentrione del colle altissimo.
2 And the Lord said to Gideon: “The people with you are many, but Midian shall not be delivered into their hands, for then Israel might glory against me, and say, ‘I was freed by my own power.’	2 E disse Iddio a Gedeon: molto popolo è teco, e non sarà dato Madian (nè messo) nelle sue mani, acciò che non si glorii (e levi in superbia) contro a me, e dica: colla mia fortezza (e con la mia virtù) io mi sono liberato (e levato il giogo da dosso).
3 Speak to the people, and proclaim in the hearing of all, ‘Whoever has dread or fear, let him return.’ And twenty-two thousand of the men from the people withdrew from Mount Gilead and returned, and only ten thousand remained.	3 Parla al popolo, e prèdica ad ogni gente, e di': chiunque è pauroso e timido sì ritorni a dietro. E partironsi tutti quelli del monte di Galaad; e partìrsi, di tutto il popolo, bene XXII milia di uomini, e non rimanseno più che X milia.
4 And the Lord said to Gideon: “The people are still too many. Lead them to the waters, and there I will test them. And those about whom I tell you that he may go with you, let him go; he whom I shall forbid to go, let him return.”	4 E disse Iddio a Gedeon: ancora sì è molto popolo (e troppo); fa che tu gli meni all' acque, e quivi sì gli proverò; e di quello ch' io ti dirò che venga teco, egli sì venga; ma colui ch' io non vorrò che ci vada, sì si ritorni.
5 And when the people had descended to the waters, the Lord said to Gideon: “Whoever will lap the water with the tongue, as dogs usually lap, you shall separate them by themselves. Then those who will drink by bending their knees shall be on the other side.”	5 Ed essendo isceso giuso il popolo all' acque, sì disse Iddio a Gedeon: coloro i quali con la lingua beranno l'acqua, sì come soglion bere i cani, sì gli spartirai (e porrai) da uno lato per sè; ma coloro che beranno inginocchiandosi, porrai loro da un' altra parte per sè.
6 And so the number of those who had lapped the water, by bringing it with the hand to the mouth, was three hundred men. And all the remainder of the multitude drank by bending the knee.	6 E furono coloro, i quali seguitavano di gittarsi l'acqua con mano in bocca, trecento uomini; ma tutta quanta l'altra moltitudine, pognendo giuso le ginocchia, avea bevuto.
7 And the Lord said to Gideon: “By the three hundred men who lapped the water, I will free you, and I will deliver Midian into your hand. But let all the remainder of the multitude return to their place.”	7 E disse Iddio a Gedeon : con quelli CCC uomini, i quali bevono l'acqua con mano, sì vi libererò, e darò nella mano tua l'oste di Madian; e tutta quanta l'altra moltitudine sì si ritorni nel luogo loro.
8 And so, taking food and trumpets in accord with their number, he instructed all the rest of the multitude to go back to their tents. And with the three hundred men, he gave himself to the conflict. Now the camp of Midian was below, in the valley.	8 E presi li cibi e le trombe per quello numero (di trecento uomini), a tutta quanta l'altra moltitudine comandò che se ne andassero a' suoi tabernacoli, (e alle loro case); ed egli solo con trecento uomini si (dispose e) mise alla battaglia. Ed era l'oste di quelli di Madian giuso (di sotto a lui) nella valle.
9 In the same night, the Lord said to him: “Rise up, and descend into the camp. For I have delivered them into your hand.	9 E in quella notte medesima sì gli disse Iddio: lièvati suso, e vanne nell' oste di Madian; imperciò ch' io l'ho dato (e messo) nelle tue mani.
10 But if you dread to go alone, let your servant Purah descend with you.	10 Ma se pure temi (e hai paura) di andare solo, venga giuso insieme teco Fara tuo servo.
11 And when you will hear what they are saying, then your hands will be strengthened, and you will descend more confidently to the camp of the enemy.” Therefore, he descended with his servant Purah into a portion of the camp, where there was a watch of armed men.	11 E avendo udito (giuso nell' oste) quello che (faranno e) diranno, allora sì si conforteranno le tue mani (e tutto il tuo cuore), e andrai più securamente giuso a' tuoi nemici e contra l'oste di Madian. E andò Gedeon, egli e il suo garzone, in una delle parti dell' oste de' nemici, e dove istavano armati coloro i quali facevano la guardia.
12 But Midian, and Amalek, and all the eastern peoples lay spread out in the valley, like a multitude of locusts. Their camels, too, were innumerable, like the sand that lies on the shore of the sea.	12 E Madian e (tutti quegli d') Amalec e il popolo degli orientali, tutti isparti, giacevano (e stavano) giuso nella valle come fossono locuste (e grilli); tanta moltitudine era; e ancora erano camelli con loro senza numero, quasi come l'arena che istà alla riva del mare.
13 And when Gideon had arrived, someone told his neighbor a dream. And he related what he had seen, in this way: “I saw a dream, and it seemed to me as if bread, baked under ashes from rolled barley, descended into the camp of Midian. And whenever it arrived at a tent, it struck it, and overturned it, and utterly leveled it to the ground.”	13 E venendo giuso Gedeon (di notte nell' oste di quelli di Madian) diceva l' uno, che istava appresso all' altro, lo sogno che avea avuto; e in questo modo sì ridiceva: io sì viddi (ed ebbi) in sogno e parevami, che fosse uno pane cotto sotto la cenere d' orzo, che si volgesse in quà e in là; e pareva che venisse giuso (nell' oste e) nel campo di Madian, e vegnendo (entrando giuso) nel suo tabernacolo (di Madian), sì lo percosse e cacciò a terra, e sì lo spianò tutto e agguagliò con la terra.
14 He to whom he spoke, responded: “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash, a man of Israel. For the Lord has delivered Midian into his hands, with their entire camp.”	14 E rispuose colui a cui questo favellava (e narrava il sogno): non altro è questo sogno (nè non vuole dire) se non il coltello di Gedeon, figliuolo di Ioas, uomo israelita; imperciò che Iddio gli hae dato (e messo) in mano Madian e tutto l'oste suo.
15 And when Gideon had heard the dream and its interpretation, he worshipped. And he returned to the camp of Israel, and he said: “Rise up! For the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into our hands.”	15 E avendo udito Gedeon il sogno e la sua interpretazione (fatta e ispianata) sì adorò Iddio Signore, e ritornò all' oste d' Israel, e disse: lièvati suso, imperciò che Iddio sì ha dato (e messo) nelle nostre mani l' oste di quelli di Madian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three parts. And he gave trumpets, and empty pitchers, and lamps for the middle of the pitchers, into their hands.	16 E divise questi trecento uomini in tre parti, e puose le trombe loro in mano, e le mezzine vote, e lampade dentro nel mezzo delle mezzine.
17 And he said to them: “What you will see me do, do the same. I will enter a portion of the camp, and what I do, you shall follow.	17 E disse loro: ciò che vedrete fare voi a me, fate anco voi; io entrerò dentro ad una parte del campo, e quello che farò seguitate.
18 When the trumpet in my hand blares out, you also shall sound the trumpets, on every side of the camp, and shout together to the Lord and to Gideon.”	18 Quando incomincerò a sonare la tromba la quale io tengo in mano, e voi ancora incontanente sonate intorno all' oste, e insieme gridate a Dio Signore e a Gedeon.
19 And Gideon, and the three hundred men who were with him, entered a portion of the camp, at the beginning of the watch in the middle of the night. And when the guards were alerted, they began to sound the trumpets and to clap the pitchers against one another.	19 Ed entrò Gedeon, e i trecento uomini che erano con lui, nell' una delle parti dell' oste (quando comincia a sonare a mattutino) su nel mezzo della notte; ed essendo desedati quelli della guardia (dell' oste di Madian), cominciò Gedeon e tutti quegli ch' erano con lui a sonare nelle trombe, e percuotere le mezzine insieme.
20 And when they had sounded their trumpets in three places around the camp, and had broken their water pitchers, they held the lamps in their left hands, and sounded the trumpets in their right hands. And they cried out, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!”	20 E sonando intorno dell' oste da tre parti, e avendo rotte le mezzine, con la mano manca tennero le lampade accese, e con la ritta (tenevano e) sonavano le trombe, e gridavano ad alta voce: il coltello di Dio Signore e quello di Gedeon,
21 And each one was standing in his place throughout the camp of the enemies. And so the entire camp was in confusion; and they fled away, wailing and crying out.	21 istando sempre, ciascuno nel luogo loro, intorno all' oste de' nemici. E subitamente tutto il campo (e l'oste) di Madian fue in grande turbazione; e gridando e urlando si fuggirono.
22 And the three hundred men nevertheless continued sounding the trumpets. And the Lord sent the sword into the entire camp, and they maimed and cut down one another,	22 E non restavano però questi trecento uomini (i quali erano con Gedeon) di sonare insieme tutte le trombe; e mandò Iddio Signore il suo coltello nell'oste di Madian; e insieme tagliavano (e uccidevano) l'un l'altro,
23 fleeing as far as Bethshittah, and the base of Abelmeholah in Tabbath. But the men of Israel pursued Midian, shouting from Naphtali and Asher, and from all of Manasseh.	23 fuggendo (tanto che vennero) persino in Betsetta e alla ripa di Abelmeula in Tebbat. E gridando tutti gli uomini di Neftali e d'Aser, e di tutto Manasse (insieme), perseguitava quello oste di Madian (E diede Iddio Signore vittoria a quelli del popolo d' Israel in quel dì).
24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all of Mount Ephraim, saying, “Descend to meet Midian, and occupy the waters ahead of them as far as Bethbarah and the Jordan.” And all of Ephraim cried out, and they occupied the waters ahead of them, from the Jordan even to Bethbarah.	24 E mandò i messi Gedeon in tutta la terra di Efraim, dicendo: venite giuso incontro a quelli (dell' oste) di Median, e occupate tutte l'acque insino a Betbera e al (fiume) Giordano. Gridarono insieme tutti quelli di Efraim, e (presono e) occuparono tutte l'acque e 'l (fiume) Giordano insino a Betbera.
25 And having apprehended two men of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, they put Oreb to death at the Rock of Oreb, and truly, Zeeb, at the Winepress of Zeeb. And they pursued Midian, carrying the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, across the waters of the Jordan.	25 E pigliando dui uomini di Madian (i maggiori), cioè Oreb e Zeb, uccisero Oreb nella pietra di Oreb, ma Zeb sì l' uccisono in su lo strettoio di Zeb. E sì perseguitarono l'oste di Madian, portando di là dal corso del (fiume) Giordano a Gedeon questi due capi, cioè d' Oreb e di Zeb.
