1 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, who delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years.	1 Les Israélites firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé et Yahvé les livra pour sept ans entre les mains de Madian.
2 And they were greatly oppressed by them. And they made for themselves hollows and caves in the mountains, and very fortified places for defense.	2 L’oppression de Madian fut dure pour Israël, et c’est à cause de Madian que les Israélites aménagèrent les fentes des montagnes, les grottes et les repaires.
3 And when Israel had planted, Midian and Amalek, and the rest of the eastern nations ascended,	3 Lorsque Israël avait semé, Madian faisait un raid avec Amalec et les fils de l’Orient.
4 and pitching their tents among them, they laid waste to all that was planted, as far as the entrance to Gaza. And they left behind nothing at all to sustain life in Israel, neither sheep, nor oxen, nor donkeys.	4 Ils s’installaient sur sa terre et dévastaient tous les champs jusqu’aux environs de Gaza; il ne restait rien à manger en Israël, ni moutons, ni bœufs, ni ânes.
5 For they and all their flocks arrived with their tents, and they filled all places like locusts, an innumerable multitude of men and camels, devastating whatever they touched.	5 Ils arrivaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, aussi nombreux que des sauterelles; on ne pouvait les compter, eux et leurs chameaux, quand ils arrivaient dans le pays pour tout ravager.
6 And Israel was humbled greatly in the sight of Midian.	6 Israël était dans la misère à cause de Madian, et les Israélites crièrent vers Yahvé.
7 And he cried out to the Lord, requesting assistance against the Midianites.	7 Voici ce qui arriva quand les Israélites criaient vers Yahvé à cause de Madian.
8 And he sent to them a man who was a prophet, and he said: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I caused you to ascend from Egypt, and I led you away from the house of servitude.	8 Yahvé envoya un prophète qui leur fit entendre cette parole de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: “C’est moi qui vous ai fait monter d’Égypte, qui vous ai fait sortir de la maison de l’esclavage.
9 And I freed you from the hand of the Egyptians and from all of the enemies who were afflicting you. And I cast them out at your arrival, and I delivered their land to you.	9 Comme je vous avais délivrés de la main des Égyptiens, je vous ai délivrés de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient. Je les ai chassés devant vous et je vous ai donné leur pays.
10 And I said: I am the Lord your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live. But you were not willing to listen to my voice.’ ”	10 Alors je vous ai dit: Je suis Yahvé votre Dieu, ne tenez aucun compte des dieux des Amorites dont vous habitez le pays. Mais vous n’avez pas écouté ma voix.”
11 Then an Angel of the Lord arrived, and he sat under an oak tree, which was at Ophrah, and which belonged to Joash, the father of the family of Ezri. And while his son Gideon was threshing and cleaning the grain at the winepress, so that he might flee from Midian,	11 L’Ange de Yahvé vint s’asseoir sous le térébinthe qui est à Ofra, il appartenait à Yoach du clan d’Abiézer. Or Gédéon, son fils, était en train de battre le blé dans le pressoir pour le cacher aux Madianites.
12 the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and he said: “The Lord is with you, most valiant of men.”	12 L’Ange de Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: “Yahvé est avec toi, courageux guerrier!”
13 And Gideon said to him: “I beg you, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why have these things happened to us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers described when they said, ‘The Lord led us away from Egypt.’ But now the Lord has forsaken us, and he has delivered us into the hand of Midian.”	13 Gédéon répondit: “Je t’en prie mon seigneur, si Yahvé est avec nous, pourquoi tout cela nous arrive-t-il? Où sont donc tous ces prodiges que nous ont racontés nos pères, quand ils nous disaient: Yahvé nous a fait monter d’Égypte? Pour l’instant Yahvé nous a laissé tomber et nous a livrés entre les mains de Madian.”
14 And the Lord looked down upon him, and he said: “Go forth with this, your strength, and you shall free Israel from the hand of Midian. Know that I have sent you.”	14 Alors Yahvé se tourna vers lui et lui dit: “Va! tu es bien assez fort pour délivrer Israël de la main de Madian: c’est moi qui t’envoie!”
15 And responding, he said: “I beg you, my lord, with what shall I free Israel? Behold, my family is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in the house of my father.”	15 Mais il répondit: “Je t’en prie, Mon Seigneur, comment sauverai-je Israël? Mon clan est le plus petit de la tribu de Manassé, et moi, je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père.”
16 And the Lord said to him: “I will be with you. And so, you shall cut down Midian as if one man.”	16 Yahvé lui dit: “Je serai avec toi et tu battras Madian comme un seul homme.”
17 And he said: “If I have found grace before you, give me a sign that it is you who is speaking to me.	17 Il répondit: “Si vraiment j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, fais-moi voir un signe et je saurai que c’est bien toi qui me parles.
18 And may you not withdraw from here, until I return to you, carrying a sacrifice and offering it to you.” And he responded, “I will wait for your return.”	18 Ne t’éloigne donc pas d’ici jusqu’à ce que je revienne avec une offrande que je déposerai devant toi.” Yahvé répondit: “Je resterai jusqu’à ton retour.”
19 And so Gideon entered, and he boiled a goat, and he made unleavened bread from a measure of flour. And setting the flesh in a basket, and putting the broth of the flesh in a pot, he took it all under the oak tree, and he offered it to him.	19 Gédéon s’en alla donc; il prépara un chevreau et, avec une mesure de farine, il fit des pains sans levain. Il mit la viande dans une corbeille et le jus dans un pot, et il apporta le tout sous le térébinthe pour le lui offrir.
20 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Take the flesh and the unleavened bread, and place them on that rock, and pour out the broth upon it.” And when he had done so,	20 L’Ange de Dieu lui dit alors: “Prends la viande et les pains sans levain, dépose-les sur le rocher qui est là, et verse le jus.” C’est ce qu’il fit.
21 the Angel of the Lord extended the end of a staff, which he was holding in his hand, and he touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves. And a fire ascended from the rock, and it consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves. Then the Angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.	21 Alors l’ange de Yahvé étendit son bâton et, du bout de son bâton, il toucha la viande et les pains sans levain: le feu s’éleva du rocher et consuma la viande et les pains sans levain; quant à l’Ange de Yahvé, il avait disparu de devant ses yeux.
22 And Gideon, realizing that it had been the Angel of the Lord, said: “Alas, my Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.”	22 Gédéon comprit que c’était l’Ange de Yahvé et il dit: “Malheur à moi, Seigneur Yahvé, car vraiment j’ai vu l’Ange de Yahvé face à face!”
23 And the Lord said to him: “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid; you shall not die.”	23 Mais Yahvé lui dit: “Sois sans crainte, tu ne mourras pas.”
24 Therefore, Gideon built an altar to the Lord there, and he called it, the Peace of the Lord, even to the present day. And while he was still at Ophrah, which is of the family of Ezri,	24 Gédéon construisit un autel à Yahvé en ce lieu et il l’appela: Yahvé-Paix. Il existe encore aujourd’hui à Ofra, sur les terres d’Abiézer.
25 that night, the Lord said to him: “Take a bull of your father’s, and another bull of seven years, and you shall destroy the altar of Baal, which is your father’s. And you shall cut down the sacred grove which is around the altar.	25 Cette même nuit Yahvé lui dit: “Prends le jeune taureau de ton père. Tu démoliras l’autel de Baal qui appartient à ton père et tu couperas l’ashéra qui est à côté.
26 And you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, at the summit of this rock, on which you placed the sacrifice before. And you shall take the second bull, and you shall offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which you shall cut down from the grove.”	26 Puis tu bâtiras un autel à Yahvé ton Dieu, sur le sommet de cette colline fortifiée, et tu prépareras le jeune taureau pour l’offrir par le feu sur le bois de l’ashéra que tu auras coupée.”
27 Therefore, Gideon, taking ten men from his servants, did just as the Lord had instructed him. But fearing his father’s household, and the men of that city, he was not willing to do it by day. Instead, he completed everything by night.	27 Gédéon prit donc dix de ses serviteurs et fit ce que Yahvé lui avait ordonné. Mais il avait peur de le faire de jour, car il craignait la famille de son père et les hommes de la ville; c’est pourquoi il fit cela de nuit.
28 And when the men of that town had risen up in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the sacred grove cut down, and the second bull set upon the altar, which then had been built.	28 Quand les hommes de la ville se levèrent de bon matin, ils virent que l’autel de Baal était renversé; l’ashéra qui se trouvait à côté avait été coupée, et le jeune taureau avait été offert en holocauste sur le nouvel autel.
29 And they said one to another, “Who has done this?” And when they inquired everywhere as to the author of the deed, it was said, “Gideon, the son of Joash, did all these things.”	29 Ils se demandaient l’un à l’autre qui avait fait cela. Ils se mirent à questionner, à interroger, et on leur répondit: “C’est Gédéon fils de Yoach qui l’a fait.”
30 And they said to Joash: “Bring forward your son here, so that he may die. For he has destroyed the altar of Baal, and he has cut down the sacred grove.”	30 Les hommes de la ville dirent à Yoach: “Fais sortir ton fils et qu’il meure! C’est lui qui a renversé l’autel de Baal et coupé l’ashéra qui était à côté.”
31 But he responded to them: “Could you be the avengers of Baal, so that you fight on his behalf? Whoever is his adversary, let him die before the light arrives tomorrow; if he is a god, let him vindicate himself against him who has overturned his altar.”	31 Mais Yoach répondit à tous ceux qui s’étaient attroupés autour de lui: “Est-ce à vous de défendre Baal? Est-ce à vous de le délivrer? Si quelqu’un défend Baal, il sera mis à mort avant le matin; si Baal est Dieu, qu’il se défende lui-même puisqu’on a renversé son autel.”
32 From that day, Gideon was called Jerubbaal, because Joash had said, “Let Baal avenge himself against him who has overturned his altar.”	32 Ce jour-là on donna à Gédéon le surnom de Yéroubbaal, car on disait: “Que Baal s’en prenne à lui, puisqu’il a renversé son autel.”
33 And so, all of Midian, and Amalek, and the eastern peoples were gathered together. And crossing the Jordan, they encamped in the valley of Jezreel.	33 Tous les Madianites, les Amalécites et les fils de l’Orient se donnèrent rendez-vous; ils passèrent le Jourdain et campèrent dans la plaine de Yizréel.
34 But the Spirit of the Lord entered Gideon, who, sounding the trumpet, summoned the house of Abiezer so that he might follow him.	34 Alors l’esprit de Yahvé s’empara de Gédéon. Il sonna du cor et tout le clan d’Abiézer se rassembla derrière lui.
35 And he sent messengers into all of Manasseh, who also followed him, and other messengers into Asher, and Zebulun, and Naphtali, who went to meet him.	35 Il envoya des messagers dans tous le pays de Manassé, qui lui aussi se rassembla derrière lui. Il envoya encore des messagers en Asher, en Zabulon et en Nephtali, et ils vinrent à sa rencontre.
36 And Gideon said to God: “If you will save Israel by my hand, just as you have said:	36 Gédéon dit à Dieu: “Si vraiment tu veux sauver Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit, accorde-moi ce signe.
37 I will set this wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there will be dew only on the fleece, and all the ground is dry, I will know that by my hand, as you have said, you will free Israel.”	37 Je mettrai une toison de laine sur l’aire. Si la toison seule a de la rosée, alors que toute la terre autour reste sèche, je saurai que tu veux délivrer Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit.”
38 And so it was done. And rising in the night, wringing out the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.	38 C’est ce qui arriva. Quand il se leva de bon matin, il pressa la toison et il fit égoutter la rosée, de quoi remplir une coupe.
39 And again he said to God: “Let not your fury be enkindled against me, if I test once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that only the fleece may be dry, and all the ground may be wet with dew.”	39 Gédéon dit alors à Dieu: “Ne te fâche pas contre moi. Laisse-moi parler une fois encore et renouveler rien qu’une fois l’épreuve de la toison: que la toison seule reste sèche et que toute la terre autour soit couverte de rosée.”
40 And that night, God did as he had requested. And it was dry only on the fleece, and there was dew on all the ground.	40 Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là, et la toison resta sèche alors que la rosée couvrait la terre.
