1 After Abimelech, a leader rose up in Israel, Tola, the son of Puah, the paternal uncle of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, who lived in Shamir on mount Ephraim.	1 Dopo Abimèlech sorse a salvare Israele Tola, figlio di Pua, figlio di Dodo, della tribù di Issacar. Egli abitava a Samir, sulla montagna di Efraim.
2 And he judged Israel for twenty-three years, and he died and was buried at Shamir.	2 Egli giudicò Israele per ventitré anni; poi morì e fu sepolto a Samir.
3 After him succeeded Jair, a Gileadite, who judged Israel for twenty-two years,	3 Dopo di lui sorse il galaadita Iair, il quale giudicò Israele per ventidue anni.
4 having thirty sons sitting upon thirty young donkeys, and who were leaders of thirty cities, which from his name were called Havvoth Jair, that is, the towns of Jair, even to the present day, in the land of Gilead.	4 Aveva trenta figli che cavalcavano su trenta asini e governavano altrettante città nella regione del Gàlaad, dette i "villaggi di Iair", nome che conservano ancora.
5 And Jair died, and he was buried in the place which is called Kamon.	5 Quando Iair morì, fu sepolto a Kamon.
6 But the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, joining new sins to old, and they served idols, the Baals and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria and Sidon, and of Moab and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines. And they abandoned the Lord, and they did not worship him.	6 Gli Israeliti ripresero a compiere ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, prestando culto ai Baal, alle Astarti, agli dèi di Aram, agli dèi di Sidone, agli dèi di Moab, agli dèi degli Ammoniti e agli dèi dei Filistei. Abbandonarono il Signore e non lo adoravano più.
7 And the Lord, becoming angry against them, delivered them into the hands of the Philistines and the sons of Ammon.	7 Esplose allora contro Israele l'ira del Signore, il quale consegnò gli Israeliti nelle mani dei Filistei e degli Ammoniti.
8 And they were afflicted and vehemently oppressed for eighteen years, all who were living beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorite, which is in Gilead,	8 Quell'anno Filistei e Ammoniti iniziarono una spietata oppressione degli Israeliti che durò diciotto anni: ne furono colpiti tutti gli Israeliti che abitavano al di là del Giordano, nella regione amorrita del Gàlaad.
9 to such a great extent that the sons of Ammon, crossing over the Jordan, laid waste to Judah and Benjamin and Ephraim. And Israel was exceedingly afflicted.	9 Gli Ammoniti passarono poi il Giordano per portar guerra anche alle tribù di Giuda, di Beniamino e di Efraim, cosicché l'oppressione di Israele era grande.
10 And crying out to the Lord, they said: “We have sinned against you. For we have forsaken the Lord our God, and we have served the Baals.”	10 Allora gli Israeliti gridarono al Signore: "Abbiamo peccato contro di te, perché abbiamo abbandonato il nostro Dio per prestare il nostro culto ai Baal".
11 And the Lord said to them: “Did not the Egyptians, and the Amorites, and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines,	11 Ma Dio rispose così agli Israeliti: "Quando gli Egiziani, gli Amorrei, gli Ammoniti, i Filistei,
12 and also the Sidonians, and Amalek, and Canaan, oppress you, and so you cried out to me, and I rescued you from their hand?	12 i Sidoni, gli Amaleciti, i Cananei vi opprimevano, e voi alzavate il vostro grido a me, io vi ho salvato dalle loro mani.
13 And yet you have forsaken me, and you have worshipped foreign gods. For this reason, I will not continue to free you any more.	13 Ma nonostante questo, voi mi avete abbandonato per servire altri dèi. Per questo non voglio più salvarvi!
14 Go, and call upon the gods whom you have chosen. Let them free you in the time of anguish.”	14 Andatevene piuttosto a implorare l'aiuto degli dèi che vi siete scelti. Penseranno loro a salvarvi nel tempo della vostra oppressione".
15 And the sons of Israel said to the Lord: “We have sinned. You may repay us in whatever way pleases you. Yet free us now.”	15 Ripresero gli Israeliti: "Abbiamo peccato: fa' tu di noi tutto quello che vuoi; ma oggi liberaci, ti imploriamo!".
16 And saying these things, they cast out all the idols of the foreign gods from their regions, and they served the Lord God. And he was touched by their miseries.	16 Gli Israeliti allora eliminarono di mezzo a loro gli dèi stranieri e tornarono ad adorare il Signore, il cui animo non poté più resistere alle sofferenze d'Israele.
17 And then the sons of Ammon, shouting out together, pitched their tents in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together against them, and they made camp at Mizpah.	17 Radunatisi, gli Ammoniti avevano posto il campo nel Gàlaad. Anche gli Israeliti si radunarono per andare ad accamparsi in Mizpa.
18 And the leaders of Gilead said to one another, “Whoever among us will be the first to begin to contend against the sons of Ammon, he shall be the leader of the people of Gilead.”	18 Intanto il popolo e i capi galaaditi cercavano chi sarebbe stato l'uomo che avrebbe intrapreso la guerra contro gli Ammoniti: sarebbe stato lui il capo di tutti i Galaaditi.
